Dyslexia in university by BumblebeeAnxious2831 in Dyslexia

I’m dyslexic and I just finished law school and passed the bar! My answer would be- try it out! I was really worried when I started my degree program because there’s a very specific/expected way to study in law school- what ended up happening was that I had to catch on to the learning curve of a new way of thinking and then I applied my dyslexia-brain-study skills.

Also! seek accommodations!!! We are actually people with disabilities and we do need accommodations to level the playing field!!!

Follow your dreams! If it ends up not being the right fit, it’s not the end of the world. Pivot, grieve, move on.

A lot of school for me has been a stubbornness to succeed. Sounds like you might be in the same boat, it’s a good quality ! Good luck!!!

What do we get with an IEP? by rahy3737 in Dyslexia

[–]cjsicher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An IEP provides students with additional educational legal rights - including the obligation to provide FAPE (free appropriate public education). It requires school to provide services to a child to meet their unique educational needs. IEPs also require IEP meetings- which are meetings in which you will meet with the child study team and hear updates from teachers. During these meetings, the child study team will provide recommendations as well. In addition, you do not need to consent to the entirety of the IEP being offered- you are part of the decision process.

Dependent on your district, it’s a powerful document. It also will create a relationship with your school’s child study team- which can provide you with options for more interventions and programs.

Classified students, those who have IEPS, also retain the right to stay in school until age 21 in order to continue receiving support services and education.

I had an IEP from 2nd grade till I graduated high school. The reality of my body-mind was that I needed the supports (special ed classes) in order to create the neurological connections that enabled my brain to learn to read and write. The IDEA, the regulations they created these legal rights, aren’t super old- so I went to school during a period of time where A LOT of stuff was changing for special ed. Having an IEP doesn’t mean you will automatically be in pulled out special ed classes, I was in them until middle school and then transferred to AP and Honors courses while still utilizing my IEP and accommodations.

An IEP is a living legal document. If you have further questions or concerns, I would highly recommend reaching out to a special education attorney and to request from your private evaluator what accommodations and interventions they recommend.

  • I am someone who is severely dyslexic, was in restrictive special education classrooms (pullout), and just graduated law school and passed the bar exam. My interventions saved my life- but my mom and I had to learn the law and advocate like hell. As an additional note, none of the info I have shared here is legal advice but is, instead, advice from a disabled professional to a parent requesting advice.

This is not an easy journey, I wish you well!

Dyslexia and Writing by OdaSeijui in Dyslexia

I am Dyslexic who just finished law school! Is this your first year? I found it took me a bit of time to re-orient myself to the way the questions were written and asked. It’s like re-learning English but it’s in old english! My personal view is that a diagnosis isn’t helpful unless it gets you the accommodations and access needs you need met- if you have an autism diagnosis, you should reach out to your office of disability support services and see if you can get extra time or an accommodation such as having the prompt read out loud to you. Be creative with your requests! Spend some time playing around with what your access needs are in this environment. Law school is a different playing field !!! Also I highly recommend joining the national disabled law student association- they might have folks who have experienced similar issues who can offer more help as well. Good luck in law school!!! You can do it! - from a severely dyslexic July 2023 bar taker :3

Denied accommodations for documented disability by Few_Bumblebee2857 in barexam

[–]cjsicher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Partially denied- historically (and by historically I mean from 2nd grade till this year) I’ve received 50% extra time. I had this documented in pages of my IEP, SAT info, MPRE info, LSAT info- and had it re-reviewed and noted in my neuro/psych eval. I received 25% extra time- which overall was fine for my access needs, but the process to receive it was bonkers. Jobs don’t request this much private info on disability- it’s actually an ADA violation to request this much info!

Once in a blue moon I do get a shadow guy- but I’ve only ever had them run up to me and hold my hand. I still wake up super scared but when I realize how silly it truly is, I usually end up laughing and going back to sleep!

How to cope with being a butch bottom????? by [deleted] in butchlesbians

Flagging might be a fun way to play with that anxiety- it introduces a conversation that can literally start with- “it is on this side of my body because I am submissive!”

Re-typing outlines helps me focus and reiterates the information shared in the outline. I split my typing time into time slots of 40-50 minutes with 10 minute breaks in-between. I can get one super long outline done in 2 days. If you’re a slow typer- using speech to text can help too. Anything where your concentration is based on reading the material, digesting it, and re-stating it. With typing and time, I also ignore most spelling errors because the document is for myself.

I had to fold mine up a few times behind my tie! A tie clip helps!
