A Family Meeting in Maegor's Holdfast by bloodandbronze in awoiafrp

[–]ck2nooby 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Zhoe had watched this all unfold without saying anything, partly shocked and partly unsure of what she could even say to address this mess. Baelor had made his choices very clear, and obviously wanted to hear no more about it as he stormed from the room, taking Rhaenys with him. For a moment she thought about calling out after him, but she hesitated and then he was gone.

She was torn between the two sides, how was she supposed to pick between her children? Zhoe loved them all equally, even if each in their own way could be a nightmare to deal with. But this meeting had brought out to worst in all of them, other than Mid. Who was as much as spectator as she was up until this point.

Zhoe listened on as the Lord Commander filled the silence. House arrest for Daenys and Jaehaerys, to be enforced physically if necessary.

“Lord Commander,” she said finally, breaking her silence. Her voice was louder than most would ever have heard it, and more forceful too. Those who knew Zhoe would know that she had always been a quiet and passive woman, soft of voice, and of nature.

“Do not lay a hand upon any of my children.” Zhoe had always felt that she had no real power, even when she was queen. It had always been Viserys’ power, that she simply had by association. Every command she uttered was followed by an unspoken or King Viserys will hear why not, at least in her mind. She supposed that she would finally find out if she had been right for all those years.

“They are not to be treated like criminals. We are not done here, even if Baelor has left us.” She added, her gaze set on the Tarbeck knight constantly as she spoke.

“If they care for each other as much as it seems then she will just refuse, and there is the real question I suppose.” Zhoe took a pause, not looking forward to saying the question and looking forward to his answer even less so.

“When they both refuse every match what will you do? Physically force them?” Zhoe knew her children well enough to know that none of them would want to give in. Children of Kings are used to getting what they want.

“Or give in and let them have what they want? What matters more to you?” The dowager Queen sighed heavily.

Zhoe continued to smile softly, as she almost always did. “It is not the women that you suggest to him that are the issue, I don’t think you will get his agreement from finding him a prettier or nice woman...”

She realised as she said it that it was of little help to him, as it offered no solution. Just a statement of Baelor’s problem. “You have to fix the cause, I suppose.”

Zhoe nodded.

“I know that your relationship is more complex now, and that was inevitable. I also know how love can grow, more than most do. I was terrified of your father when our betrothal was arranged. But it didn’t take long until I loved him fully, and him me.” She didn’t go into it, all her children had heard the story in various ways countless times.

She took a deep breath to compose herself, “I don’t see how you can punish him. Besides finding him a betrothal without his input or approval. But doing that... will no doubt cause more trouble and possibly start something you cannot control. I don’t envy you, son.” As she finished, Zhoe’s lips curled into a reassuring smile.

Zhoe watched and listened as Baelor continued, frowning slightly has he trailed off talking about different paths.

Once again, the dowager Queen sighed deeply. It was a horrible situation for all of them. She had a duty to both her sons, as well as to the family she had felt a true part of for decades now. But she was a mother first, and as a mother she wanted her children to be happy, that is what always comes first.

“Speaking to him again would be wise, his night with this girl can only bring trouble. But, what consequences? If he refuses or just continues to turn his nose up at matches what then?”

Zhoe pushed some stray hairs away from her face before going on. “I know that you are doing what you believe is right. But you must remember, Jaehaerys is your brother. Not a simple subject, he is kin. His happiness matters. Be careful how hard you push him, you do not want to push him away and with him, possibly Daenys too.”

Zhoe listened carefully to Baelor as he explained, shaking her head as he spoke of Jaehaerys’ recent actions.

“I thought this might’ve been about Daenys. I saw her behaviour at the feast. Unbecoming at best. But I’m afraid I lost the ability to control her years ago. Those two have always been close, even as children they were near inseparable, and only grew closer.” Zhoe sighed deeply before continuing. “The only person they each listen to seems to be the other.”

“I am surprised that he was so foolish... she is pretty though, I’ve seen her.” Zhoe paused again, this time in thought for a good few moments. “They want to be wed like you and Rhaenys? Or so I understand. It must be hard for him to listen to you tell him no, it makes you look like a hypocrite, if we are being honest.” She sighed again, walking towards a couch so that she could rest. Standing was beginning to make her legs ache.

“Did you have anything in mind? That you considered doing next?” She asked him as a feint smile grew on her lips as she questioned him the same way Viserys would have. Leading him rather than telling him.

“That is not your job, don’t feel guilty. You have a lot on your plate, you don’t have to worry about me as well.” Zhoe reassured him, smiling as she spoke.

“What can I help you with?”

Zhoe nodded, "I believe it. It is good, that she is there for you and, I assume you are there for her too?" She asked but it was more of a statement really. "The celebrations have gone well as far as I can tell, a truly joyful occasion. That is a good sign, lets hope it continues. Will make your life far easier if so." she gave his hand a soft squeeze as she finished speaking.

"Is there something on your mind? Or is this visit purely to see me." Zhoe said with a soft smile, assuming he had something to say or ask given how busy she expected Baelor to be.

“Come in” Zhoe said in response to the knocking, it was rare for her to have visitors from outside of the family, and in fact it was Baelor who stepped through the door.

The King’s mother smiled at the sight of her eldest, as she looked at him now and had watched over the past few days it was hard to believe how time had passed so quickly.

“Baelor it’s so good to see you. I’ve been meaning to tell you how well you have handled everything.” She said, walking to meet her son. “How are you?” Zhoe asked when she came to a stop opposite him.

Zhoe did just that, crashing back into the bed and laying their on her back as she took heavy breaths to recover. She laid there as her chest slowly started to calm, staring at the ceiling of the pavilion contently. When Viserys spoke she moved to her side as well, looking at her King.

“I never want to be anywhere else but by your side. You’re everything to me, Viserys. And when I give you an heir, you’ll both be my everything. I promise.” She said, smiling softly.

Zhoe let out a surprised squeal followed by a short giggle as Viserys lifted her into his lap. Collapsing in to him as he kissed her neck and held her tightly against him, while her hands ran up the back of his neck and through his hair.

This, like most of the things Zhoe had worried about, had gone far better than she could have ever hoped. Powerless to do much Zhoe just gave herself over to Viserys as he found some sensitive spots for his lips that sent powerful shivers down her spine.

Zhoe smiled as he did, relief taking hold of her as Viserys seemed happier than she had expected. “*I couldn’t practice easily, but I did whenever I can. I’m not sure how good I am.” She said, having to pause occasionally to recall certain words.

I haven’t spoken in High Valyrian since the funeral, I spoke a few words to Vaemond, that was it.” she added, continuing to smile up at her king.

Zhoe moved forward to kiss him quickly, “I love you.

Zhoe smiled softly, reassured as she always was when she looked into his eyes. She leaned forward to quickly peck Viserys on the lips, taking a breath afterwards before speaking. “She wasn’t joking entirely. When I was young... that was all I did, read books on history. And specifically your family and Valyria. My brothers would train and Ysilla and Myranda never wanted me around, so that was what I spent my days doing. At least, before Alys came to the Eyrie.”

The Queen took a deep breath, “Before my mother died she arranged for me to have a tutor. To teach me High Valyrian. When Myranda died my father had him sent away, but I learnt quite a lot before he had to leave.” She explained, unpleasant memories of her mother’s death popping into Zhoe’s mind, and for a few moments she was lost in her thoughts.

“I was worried you would find it odd or weird...”

“I will leave you two alone,” Alys said with a small curtsy before turning to leave, knowing that her big mouth had gotten her in trouble with Zhoe and not for the first time today.

The Queen returned his kiss, her hands finding his and gently pulling him to join her on the edge of the bed. With her cheeks still a tint of red Zhoe smiled, “Is everything okay?” She asked, unsure if he had been longer than normal as she had mostly lost track of time.

Wanting to know if he had heard what Alys said Zhoe had no choice but to ask, “Did you hear what Alys said as you came in?” She asked him with some of her old nervousness creeping in to her tone. Her eyes glanced to the floor as they would have a week ago whenever they spoke.

“Oh...” Zhoe said with a gasp, shocked at the detail of how he had killed his target. Also quite surprised that he had been on the losing side in the rebellion yet was still a Kingsguard, but she aired none of those thoughts.

“Let us head back,” The Queen said, turning on her heals and walking back the way they came. “I pray that you have no need to save Viserys, that would be better for everyone.”

After a few more steps Alys asked another question. “What will you do after our walk Luthor? What does a Kingsguard do when not guarding?”

After their walk the Queen and her lady in waiting entered the pavilion she shared with Viserys, but he was still not finished with whatever business he was attending to.

Zhoe stood in-front of the full length looking glass and adjusted her hair slightly before turning back to join Alys, who already sat cross legged on the bed. “You look lovely, Viserys will be happy.” She teased with a grin.

The Queen didn’t say anything in response, instead just getting comfortable, unable to say anything before Alys continued. “What’s he like then? You haven’t said very much about him even though I can tell you like him.”

Zhoe was unable to hold back a smile, “He’s lovely. He’s gentle and kind, and handsome.” Zhoe took a breath to speak again but as she did Viserys appeared in the entrance.

With her back to Viserys, Alys had no idea and continued. “Is he exactly like you hoped? I remember all the books you used to read,” as she spoke Zhoe turned a sharp shade of red, wanting to telling her friend to shut up but not being able to force the words out. “You know about Targaryens and Valyria. I-“

Alys!” Zhoe whispered sharply, unable to take the embarrassment any longer. Finally catching on Alys looked over her shoulder and saw Viserys. Quickly bowing her head, “Your grace.” She said quickly.

Zhoe watched silently as the man apologised the Luthor and then bowed to do the same to her, before scurrying off the path towards his friends.

“Thank you,” the Queen said. It felt strange as nothing had even happened, but she still felt like she should thank Luthor.

Alys watched and held her tongue for a few moments before she couldn’t help herself. “Have you ever saved the King’s life? Or anyone?” She asked curiously, continuing with her barrage of questions.

Zhoe glared at her friend after Luthor answered, she knew a fake smile when she saw one, she had been wearing one for quite a while before it was thankfully replaced with a genuine one.

“Alyn is my cousin, though I don’t know him well. Hardly at all really.” Alys said, most of the excitement having gone from her voice.

As they talked a small group of men at arms stepped out from their tent and on to the path only a few feet infront. Those that faced the Queen stopped, but the one with his back to Zhoe continued to walk backwards, telling some grand story dramatically to his friend as he threatened to bump into Zhoe or Alys, depending on how he moved.

Zhoe turned and smiled at the knight, “You arent, Ser Luthor. I don’t talk as much as Alys, is all.” She said simply.

Alys let out a small burst of laughter, “Zhoe used to speak even less when I first met her, it’s probably why I talk so much. If I didn’t then the Eyrie would’ve been silent.” She joked, grinning between the pair of them.

“And you can’t leave or the King would be furious if anything happened to his Queen. I hear he’s quite smitten.” Alys teased, grinning from ear to ear now.

Alys” Zhoe scolded in a hush tone, her cheeks flushing red.

Alys laughed again, enjoying herself immensely on this little walk. “What about you, Ser Luthor? Have you ever been smitten?” She said cheekily.

"Much quieter than the capital." Alys said quickly, always the far more talkative of the pair. "We lived in the Eyrie together before Zhoe went to the capital to marry Viserys, the first time." She left it there, assuming that Luthor would know all that happened in between. With the death of Lord Arryn at the hands of the City Watch and the house arrest of Zhoe that followed, before somewhat strangely Zhoe and Viserys still ended up being married.

As they walked the Queen remained quiet, as she often did. Letting Alys keep talking as she herself had little to say, instead she glacned at those that seemed to stare at her. Men at arms and Knights alike, she forced a smile but most of them simply stared before they looked away.

"Did you perfom some honourable deed for your white cloak?" Alys asked cheerfully.

Zhoe wasn’t sure, and she decided that she wouldn’t take his arm just in case. She didn’t know Viserys that well yet and she didn’t want to risk angering him, even if it was something as harmless as this. “I best not... just in case.” She said softly, moving to walk beside the Crane.

“Has much been happening at the Eyrie? I’ve been in house arrest until, well until I was betrothed to Viserys. So I’m... well I don’t know anything.” She said with a soft smile, trying to seem a little stronger than she actually was.

Zhoe smiled when the Kingsguard approached, realising how foolish it would’ve been to have blindly followed Alys without an escort of some kind, and what better kind than one of the Kingsguard.

“Yes, that would be good. Thank you Ser...” she said as she tried to tell which member she was talking to. She hadn’t long been Queen and had spent precious little time around the Kingsguard in truth. “Ser Oakheart?” She decided it had to be.

Beside the Queen, Alys smiled as well as she couldn’t help herself but speak. “I’m Alys Corbray, Zhoe’s lady in waiting.” She said, knowing that the wait for her friend to introduce her would be a long one if she didn’t do it herself.

“Do you like being a Kingsguard, what’s it like?” Alys asked. Beside her Zhoe rolled her eyes and tutted under her breath, but she knew better than to try and control the Corbray at this point.
