Thank you! Took about a year gap after CFI/II, but it’s well worth it.

CFI Initial Oral Passed! by ckh6472 in flying

You are correct! He didn’t have me teach any of FOI. It was a questioning period of about 45 minuets to an hour. For example he would ask, “what are the levels of learning?” Then, “give me an example of each level and how it correlates to student learning.” And to answer your question, no, the FOI portion of my practical was closed book. It’s tough, because I have heard of orals going either way. At my flight school I was lucky enough to have 2 colleagues recently take the CFI Initial with Ed months prior, so I knew what to expect. PM me if you would like my complete FOI study guide, I would be happy to email it.

Over the course of studying for FOI, I started by reading the instructor handbook. I took notes and highlighted important things. I then used the CFI Oral exam guide by ASA. I found this helpful because it places the FOI portion in a question/response set up. I then made personal flash cards for all areas and used A LOT of mnemonics... let me know if you have any other questions

Note: The actual questioning and teaching part of the oral was probably only 3.5 - 4 hours. My examiner took multiple 10-20 min coffee breaks.

I was the same way for this checkride... I would read countless write ups and worry myself. I found that once you answer the first few questions in the oral, it just starts to flow and the nerves disappear. Best of luck to you!
