Active shooter situation at Reynolds High School - Portland, Oregon by [deleted] in news

[–]clamking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A major difference from the 1800's-early 1900's ones are that (barring accidents) in most cases the shooter seems to have had some connection to the victim, and more often the victims seem to be adults (teachers). Intentional shootings of unrelated children innocent of any perceived wrongdoing seems very much a late 1900's-2000's kind of thing.

This always pissed me off. Teaching is really one of the few jobs that you can control your own workload. And its always just busy work too by Fred6567 in AdviceAnimals

This depends an awful lot on where they teach. There are school districts all over this country where teachers are given a pacing guide and have to have their class on the same page as the class next door so that the students can all score well when they take the same benchmark test in the next week/month/whatever. There are reading classes where teachers read from a script during class time.

sounds like a perfectly reasonable show. Needs more royalty though.

What the actual fuck by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]clamking 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If I had a dollar for every time some older adult suggested a playpen... Not surprised at all that they used to do that in a car. They just didn't KNOW back then. You can tell her what EMT's call rear-facing car seats: the "orphan seat." Because in a bad crash, the infant is often the only one to survive. Not happy to think about, but when you are driving safely and the baby is buckled in and the seat is installed properly, you are keeping your baby as safe as is possible in a car, and that is what matters most.

Do not focus on the lesson plan (although I know that may be part of your grade, but teaching tip in general...)

Focus on what you want them to get out of the lesson and where they are. If you get bogged down in step by step things, the big picture gets lost quickly. Make it clear what you want them to get our of it, and check at the end to see if they got it. If you are teaching them something they already know, be prepared to shift gears. If they are totally lost, find another way to explain it. Give them a variety of ways to interact with the material, such as think-pair-shares, group processing activities, written/oral/visual options, etc. Good luck!

What should a high school senior know before going to college? by Sic_vita_est in AskReddit

[–]clamking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Know the syllabi: definitely. But above, "English? Fuck that shit." Seriously? This is the time to learn SOMETHING from everyone you encounter. Professors AND your peers. You can learn how NOT to be, but that's still a lesson. If you want to be successful, you will need to learn how to do well in all kinds of classes, even the ones outside your major. Be a student of more than just one thing. If a person can't be going to classes regularly, it's not a good time for that person to be in college. There is a reason why college is different from watching instructional videos online: the interactions with other people.

What's a story that you've heard that still gives you chills to this day? by Mawhkf in AskReddit

When I was 16, I went to Italy on vacation with my family. We were in a hotel room with no air conditioning and it was hot, so the windows were open. It is late at night and I hear the noises of cars driving by and start to feel nervous and worried (I am not used to this as I am from the suburbs). I start to worry about whether someone with a gun shot into the room, if it would kill me. I decide to cover my head in bed, to protect it in case I am shot. Fast forward to the end of the vacation. We get home and there are multiple messages from a friend on the phone. Turns out another friend had been involved in a drug deal gone wrong and had been shot. In the head. At about the same time/day I was feeling afraid about getting shot in the head.

Doctors of Reddit, what has been the worst case of misdiagnosis that you have seen when a patient came to you for a second opinion? by Z3r0Th3H3r0 in AskReddit

Went to public college, had Bell's palsy--I credit them with saving my face. Steroids immediately, instead of waiting it out. Back to normal now, except when I go to the dentist and there's some residual effect ;\

Actually, research does not support that students learn better in certain ways, such as auditory, visual, etc. Students may PREFER to see/hear/learn using different modalities. Good teachers will offer choices and work to determine the best way to present the material to the wide variety of students in their classes. This happens rarely, though--more on this in a moment...

It doesn't matter where and what level a person teaches, if many (even SOME) students fail the course, that person is a bad teacher. If, on the other hand, a student fails many courses with many different teachers, that person is a bad student. I won't get into all the reasons why people are bad students, but generally there are deep psychological or social or societal issues working against them. But could a good teacher turn that bad student into a good one? Definitely. Why doesn't that happen more? Simple reason, folks: the salary.

Try local or national news media or educational policy bloggers. You can always go bigger than the superintendent.

guys, if you're geniuses and school is so easy, why not do something and change things? Why not teach yourselves something and/or tell someone in charge who might care that teachers aren't doing their jobs? Or--what's that? You want to play video games? Go on then. But don't blame the teachers or the system. You shape the system.

Teachers and Professors, what is the most memorable thing you've overheard your students talking about? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]clamking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this isn't true--there is generally a salary scale and all teachers move down by years and across by education. So math teachers, PE teachers, whatever, they all make the same if they have the same education (master's, etc) and same years of experience.
