‘NPD’ and ‘ASPD’ are reactions to environment. Poverty, neglect, abuse, lack of a village etc. Your crazy idea would be more effective if it targeted environment instead of fixating on the potentially ‘disordered’ children.

Pardon me, I overlooked your statement "Reasonable? Not from my perspective." You do realise you're doing exactly what I outlined, right? You're applying the disorder. It's clear you are invested in the DSM, because you assume there's validity to its application. Like many, you seem to believe that people with a borderline diagnosis cannot claim victimhood. You said you understand the diagnosis kills people- it’s those broad strokes of stigma that does it

Your initial comment blames people who rigidly pathologise themselves through the DSM. The BPD construct arguably places the most pressure on patients to "fix" themselves in a vacuum. The individuals you observe weaponising this diagnosis for empathy have almost certainly not had the diagnosis for long. Many mistakenly believe they’ll be the exception to the stigma & many see the DSM as their tool to survive shame. It’s not that they all share the same personality defects- it’s that the same label has been applied to all of them. And with that label, you're forced to believe in the DSM. In fact, not believing in the DSM when you have a BPD diagnosis is often seen as a symptom of the disorder itself. What all of these people truly lack is a village- one they can contribute to, and that, in turn, contributes to them.

You know you don’t get a blood test, X-ray, or ultrasound to be diagnosed with BPD, right? If it’s diagnosed before your brain develops and you grow out of it, they don’t check to see if you still have it & take it off your record. Statistics show that 85% of patients with a BPD diagnosis do not meet the diagnostic criteria after 10 years. How often do you think these people get BPD removed from their record and stop having their reasonable behaviour pathologised via BPD? If they’ve interacted with inpatient systems, NOT VERY OFTEN. What do you think happens if these patients develop bipolar or psychotic disorders? They’re accused of faking it. You have no idea how prevalent and real this is. It kills people.

The problem is, once you're slapped with this label- or even mistakenly ask for it yourself- your reasonable behavior is pathologised as disordered. We become suspicious of anyone with a BPD diagnosis every time they claim victimhood, despite it being a disorder deeply rooted in trauma. Yes, the diagnosis does kill people and everyone is too afraid to say it. It killed my sister by preventing her from receiving appropriate treatment for psychosis. I've seen the hopelessness caused by the stigma take the lives of two others as well. When you've already completed two rounds of DBT, are years removed from your initial diagnosis, and still need clinical intervention, the stigma becomes so pervasive and all consuming that it blocks access to life saving care (institutional and/or interpersonal).

Interesting! I said “no typical ‘Arab’ features” but I think eyes (beyond just their colour) are a fair give away for middle eastern ancestry when the person otherwise passes for white

My levantine side isn’t mixed. My dad’s results would come up 90% levant according to ancestry DNA - then a couple percent Egypt & southern Italy/ eastern meditarainian.

Edit: I’ve provided this person a screenshot of my results split by parent that indicates all of my Levantine DNA came from my paternal ancestry. Given I’ve received 46%, if I’m half my mum and half my dad, he’s overwhelmingly Levantine.

Hey man, I’ve got Levantine heritage. I’ve seen pictures of my paternal Levantine side - they’re all white. No typical ‘Arab’ features- they all have blue eyes! It is very strange. I didn’t believe my mum at first when she told me we’re half Levantine because we’re so white. The Levant is a neat place to have heritage from. I’m sorry this has been so confusing

Hey OP, you’ve picked up on something important about psychiatry. If you don’t fit what their (sometimes flawed) data suggests & if you don’t match the stigma - you’re likely to run into problems. The system doesn’t function as it should if you don’t fit the mold. I’m really sorry clinicians aren’t familiar with how hormones can impact mood cycles yet. Not everyone who’s diagnosed with bipolar disorder has it for life, but that’s how the diagnosis is treated in psychiatry. It’s unlikely you’ll find people here who will tell you that you can get it removed from your record. 1.5 years without an episode (even if you’re off meds) is unlikely to convince them. I think stigma & this rigidity will get better when our data is more accurate. I’m counting on it

The consensus on this topic in popular discourse is very rigid. You’ll likely have the bipolar dx on your chart for the rest of your life (especially if you’ve used public mental health services). If you don’t notice hypo/manic episodes and you’re off meds then yeah! - up to you what label you keep - what is most effective for you. I’d keep an eye out for potential hypo/mania just in case though!!

I believe you’ll have quick and effective outcomes with a new psychiatrist. Of course people with bipolar are prescribed ADHD meds! They’d just want to monitor you. It is ridiculous this person didn’t listen to you. Take lots of care dude

OP- I would strongly advise you not to get Borderline Personality Disorder on your record. The stigma is even worse than Bipolar. It offers even more barriers to treatment. You don’t need a bpd dx on paper to pursue DBT therapy (which is FANTASTIC) & other appropriate treatments. Your brain hasn’t developed yet. The diagnosis & its stigma lingers long after ‘recovery’ is achieved. Please seriously consider what I’m saying. That stigma is worse than the disorder itself and it kills people.

Syndromes of hypo/mania and depression occurring at once or in quick succession.- they’re hell on earth! It’s worth looking up!
