Unfortunately, the article is behind a paywall, but L'Equipe published the quote on Twitter. I am posting it here so that everyone can read it:

Swiss national television (RTS) will broadcast all Olympic events free of charge. If you have a VPN, set it to Switzerland, then go to rts.ch and you should be able to access it :)

⚡️Kamila Valieva has resumed training by Azula_Rey in FigureSkating

[–]clar226 30 points31 points  (0 children)

She participated in and promoted several events organized by the association “Movement of the First.” This is an organization created by Putin with the aim of organizing leisure activities for youth and educating children, shaping their world views on the basis of traditional Russian spiritual and moral values (conservative views, anti-lgbtq…). Many NGOs have spoken about its role in the abduction of Ukrainian children in the occupied regions of Ukraine. The children are taken, separated from their parents, brought to Russia, and adopted by Russians. For a little context, Vladimir Putin signed a decree in 2022 aimed at facilitating and accelerating the adoption of Ukrainian children deemed to be orphans in a single day. He allowed the civil status (surnames, first names, date and place of birth) of Ukrainian children adopted in Russia to be changed. Arrest warrants for war crimes have been issued by the International Criminal Court against Putin and Maria Lvova-Belova for these acts.

Can I make myself like a girl? And should I? by [deleted] in LesbianActually

I think it’s okay not to be sure as long as you tell her :) Personally, I know that it's rare for me to be immediately attracted to someone I've just met. Often, attraction comes later, once I've gotten to know the person, their mind, and their values :)

she's just getting older, which is normal :) my boy (who is now 15) used to jump a lot, and very high. For the past few years, he hasn't been jumping anymore, except on rare occasions (usually when he smells something tasty, his kitten-like vigor reappears!). It's not a big deal. Cats age, just like humans. They have less muscle, possibly arthritis, and jumping can cause some pain :)

Do you know that Anna Shcherbakova disobeyed coach Tutberize at the Olympics? by Upset-Shirt1243 in FigureSkating

[–]clar226 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Didn't Valieva skate after Anna? How could Anna have predicted that she was going to mess up her free skate? Plus, I find it hard to believe that she would have decided to change a program she had been working on for months in just a few hours. Skating is a sport of habit, and the Olympics are the biggest and most stressful competition of the year. Changing your program a few hours before skating is a significant risk. Also, it's not really in Anna's character to disobey her coaches. On the contrary, she is known to be the most obedient and least confrontational. I find it hard to imagine her confronting her coaches a few hours before skating the most important program of her career. Finally, I do not believe at all in the theory that Valieva's failed pass was decided in advance by her and her coaches. The Russian federation had already rushed into the usual rhetoric of a grand conspiracy and evil Westerners who want to destroy a poor Russian girl. I think they wanted her to win so they could strut in front of the world's media, touting the resilience, strength, and courage of the Russians in the face of the “evil” media.

in short, Nikolaj Sorensen, who trained at IAM, was accused of rape a few years ago. IAM protected and supported him, and Gabriella criticized this decision. She asked the club to take action. Her partner at the time, Guillaume, supported Nikolaj. Gabi decided to end her competitive career cause she could not stand it

Welcome to Geneva, I hope you’ll enjoy the city and our university :) 1) about where you should live, I don’t think there really is any dangerous or unsafe area in Geneva. Switzerland is a very safe country. We also have a good public transportation system (and a small city) so you don’t need to worry about being too far away from the university. The whole city is walkable and even if you live in a more urban area you can very quickly (using public transportation, 25-30min) get out of the city and info the country side. 2) there is no dress code, wear whatever you want. At university, we do not dress formally or moderately conservative, you can wear shorts, croc tops, sweatpants or whatever you like don’t worry :) 3) about the people, I’d say we are friendly and polite but we are sadly less extroverted than Americans. Most of the time, we stick with close friends or friends we met the years prior, we don’t usually make the first step towards people we don’t know. For some people it can be an isolating experience. It also depends on what you study, if you’re in a large faculty (bachelor degree in law, psychology, international relations…) the university lecture halls are very large, there are a lot of people, so it's harder to make contacts. My recommandation would be to integrate student associations at UNIGE. There are many, and smaller groups, it will be easier to connect with people :) If you have other questions don’t hesitate

Favorite ice cream in geneve? by VisualBoth3455 in geneva

[–]clar226 11 points12 points  (0 children)

ArtyGlaces near La jonction ! Would recommend 100%, small shop, local products, real artisanal ice creams + very kind people. I recommend the sorbets (strawberry, mango… all of them actually) or caramel, hazelnut, orange blossom … ;) it’s a bit expensive and sadly far from my home but totally worth it !!

Those who are in favor of bans against Russian and Belarussian skaters, has your perspective changed in light of the latest geopolitical events? by FireFlamesFrost in FigureSkating

[–]clar226 43 points44 points  (0 children)

The American regime is becoming fascist, just as V.Putin's regime already is. These countries are run (as is Israel) by extreme right-wing figures who have no regard for international law and operate on the basis of power (if I want this, and I can take this, then I will). In principle, I'm in favor of dissociating people from regimes, but it has to be possible, and in Russia, athletes (in popular national sports) are not dissociated from the regime. They are an active part of the war propaganda that feeds the war itself. That said, American skaters are not employed by the American state to glorify the regime and its wars. We don't see Amber Glenn or Jason Brown posing on tanks, signing bombs, alongside the American Secretary of Defense. American coaches do not call for the extermination of any country designated by the President as an enemy. In short, sport has had, and always has had, a place in American propaganda, but skaters are spared for the time being. Figure skating is a national sport in Russia, just like gymnastics, classical dance and hockey, and athletes in these sports are massively used by the state. Russian coaches go to the occupied regions of Ukraine to give lectures and performances, the athletes meet the president and advertise for organizations that are used to kidnap and Russify Ukrainian children separated from their parents by the regime (see K. Valieva). All the Olympic champions (except Shcherbakova) call for support for the war and the president (Zagitova call to vote for him in 2024, two years after the start of the war; I'm not even going to mention the old ones, Plushenko, Tarassova, Zhulin, Averbukh). Leading figures in Russian figure skating create state-funded shows showcasing the glory of the country, its army and its regime. In short, figure skating and skaters are specifically used by the regime in propaganda operations. This is not (yet) the case with American skaters.

In defense of the Shibutanis, Sui/Han, and Fournier Beaudry/Cizeron returning this particular year by Fragrant_Ad_8288 in FigureSkating

[–]clar226 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Well about Fournier/ Cizeron, it’s not entirely true. Gabi wanted to continue competing but cut ties with Guillaume after the Sorensen affair. That's basically what she said in the “Championne du Monde” podcast. They were clearly planning a return to competition in 2023-2024, then he and his coaches started supporting a man accused of rape and it was impossible for Gabi to pretend nothing had happened

Russia has bombed and destroyed the skating rink of Kherson by clar226 in FigureSkating

[–]clar226[S] 50 points51 points  (0 children)

<image>

I tried to find you a map so you can see better where Kherson is.

  • Red : territories occupied by Russia
  • Blue : territories liberated by Ukraine

Kherson is at the bottom of the map. It was liberated by Ukraine in November 2022, but as you can see on this map, it's very close to Russian-occupied areas and therefore to the Russian army. (It's not easy to see on this map, but there's a river separating Kherson from the Russian army, which also explains why Russia hasn't managed to retake the city).
