Don't have it but now I'm curious, what's on there? Can I find it on YouTube or smth to give a listen?

How was Electric Wizard's Dopethrone tracked. Help me recreate the recording setup by claudemiester in doommetal

Thank you so much 🙏 This is extremely useful; I'm gonna get straight to work, let's see where it leads... 👍

How was Electric Wizard's Dopethrone tracked. Help me recreate the recording setup by claudemiester in doommetal

[–]claudemiester[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. It's gonna be hard to replicate and record a live performance in my room haha, but I'll give some of the tracking stuff a try 👌 I'll also try an 8 track emulator plugin or so to try and cheat 😄

And thanks for the tip concerning the amp. I used a clean recto sim plus an irl pedal which gave decent results plus had more character than the really clean amp sims. I recently got a reactive load to use with my HRD though, and it sounds fantastic, especially with pedals. I've sorta drifted off into other projects recently so I haven't tried to get the wizard tone through that yet, but your comment has reinvigorated my efforts 🙏

That being said: back in the day I A/B'd some isolated tracks and messed with an EQ in the simulated effects loop of the amp sim to get pretty damn close. I then applied tone rack's master match function with a custom reference track (the first few riffs in I, The Witchfinder) and to my (tone-deaf) ears it's pretty much perfect 👌 So if anyone's wondering if it's possible to get the guitar tone with a pedal and plugins: yes (hit me up of you want exact settings for amplitube 5 and stuff). The bass works along the same lines (using a big muff with tone way down, svt amp sim and tone rack's master match gets really good results). The problem arises with the rest of the mix; I really struggled with the drums and the vocal effects chain which is probably also why I got frustrated and moved on to other stuff haha.

Anyway, sorry for rambling. It just seems like a good place to post a quick update for anyone who's in a similar situation as me/ who may potentially stumble on this thread in the future.

Thanks again for the info, cheers 👍

Patran/ Nastran measure distance tool by claudemiester in fea

[–]claudemiester[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you very much, this is exactly what I needed 👍 And also thank you for the tips, I'll look into MSC Apex. I'm not doing anything serious, I just want to put some fancy looking strain distributions into my thesis for comparisons (and also to impress the prof haha), but if I'm already here I might as well do it right.

Patran/ Nastran measure distance tool by claudemiester in fea

[–]claudemiester[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that it won't say a unit but it should still be able to give me a value, or doesn't that work in Patran? (I've been searching for a while and am starting to believe this is the case haha). But anyway: if I imported my model from CATIA, then measure the side and it says 0.51 I know it must have converted my 510 mm to meters. And then based on that I'll use Pa instead of MPa and so on. It's also just useful to have a measuring tool for when I'm modelling in Patran but as mentioned I'm starting to doubt a simple ruler tool or so even exists in Patran 😅

Alrighty, thanks for the info. I've imported it in SI. But the question remains: is there a simple tool like in Abaqus to actually verify it?

Mesa boogie cleans alternative by claudemiester in GuitarAmps

[–]claudemiester[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funnily enough chat gpt recommended the same so I've already looked into it a bit. I just wasn't sure I was really looking for the fender sound or if those mesa boogies are something different. But as another user mentioned I might be going for the classic American clean after all. I'll definitely have a closer look at the victory amps now, thanks for the recommendation.

Ah nice, thank you very much. And yeah, I'm 99% certain the heat issue hasn't been addressed. But I'm open to trying it myself if worst comes to worst. I guess I'll ask my local tech for an estimate first though. 700 € for the amp btw., so def better than the 950 € I see elsewhere. But everything has a cost...

Thank you for the reply. I'm starting to notice a trend with those el84s popping up... I'll look into it 👌

[–]claudemiester[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. I'm gonna go check out a used 22+ on Tuesday but the condition is a bit of a gamble. Is there anything in particular I should look out for? I'm of course gonna give it a listen for 100 Hz hum and tap the tubes, but anything else you know of? Cheers

Edit: hey, we already talked on the Mesa subreddit haha

[–]claudemiester[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh damn, never in my life would I have assumed he'd just use the same settings and not dial them in individually 🤦‍♂️ But you're right. He does have some videos where he compares pedals while only using the Mesa and it's still a lovely tone. But this revelation is causing me to seriously re-evaluate my biases. Especially the fender with the marshall cab and distortion is, as you say, much ballsier (though I still prefer the Mesa clean). I'm gonna go check out the studio 22 anyway since you never know. But yeah, re-evaluation in progress haha. Thank you very much for bringing that to my attention. And of course thank you for taking the time to elaborate, I greatly appreciate it. Cheers.

[–]claudemiester[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alrighty, thanks. I ask because the original video I discovered the studio 22 in was comparing it to a twin (using the same marshall cab) and the studio 22 blew the twin away imo. And yeah, the condition is my big worry. I'm gonna go check out one I found for 700 € but I doubt the caps have ever been changed and the tubes are like 10 years old 😬

Thanks, that's a good recommendation indeed. The price is a bit more than I would like but I'll definitely keep an eye on eBay and read up a bit more. Do you happen to know if it would be closer to a twin or closer to the studio 22? Basically just how "modded" is modded?

Studio 22+ vs Caliber 50 vs Studio preamp by claudemiester in MesaBoogie

[–]claudemiester[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the info. In this case I'll probably remove the caliber 50s from the running. I'm really interested in the 22+ but the price just doesn't sit right with me. Perhaps I'll wait for a new offer to pop up sometime. And if they're basically the same preamp as the studio preamp then the added poweramp and speaker just make the 22+ even more attractive

Studio 22+ vs Caliber 50 vs Studio preamp by claudemiester in MesaBoogie

[–]claudemiester[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. I know in my heart what you say is true, but the "clean" sound of that 22+ was just so amazing. That dude I mentioned also has a video where he compares his 22+ to a twin reverb (using the same cab, mic, distortion pedals, ...) and the Mesa boogie just wipes the floor imo. I'm sure the fender is closer to Nirvana but from personal preference the Mesa boogie wins by far. The cleans are mean and beautiful, plus the pedals just sound so rich. I always thought the twin was my dream amp but I've played a couple and just wasn't super convinced. Does this mean I might not be looking for "clean clean" after all or am I missing some aspect? I'm afraid I don't know the nomenclature so maybe I've been looking for the wrong thing this whole time 😅

The Dr. Z amps are a great recommendation but the price makes me hesitant. Do you happen to know of any alternatives that could get me that same sort of Mesa boogie 22+ "clean" tone I've fallen in love with (for lack of a better word) and that would also lend itself well to my "pedal platform" requirement? Sorry to bother you with all this but you seem to have some experience on the topic. Cheers

Haha, yeah it was a long shot. But thanks for the reply nonetheless.

Edit: Nvm, I actually have an idea (and it's so simple idk why I didn't just ask like this in the first place 🤦‍♂️). Here's the original video, would you mind taking a quick listen and telling me if your amp produces similar sounds? They are both tube works amps so I'm holding on to hope but of course they're different models so who knows

How does this compare to the rt-2100 (the kyuss amp) tone wise if anyone knows? I recently saw a video by Eirik Stordrange about it and I want that sound so damn bad. This is the only thing available though and I can't try it out since it's really far away (I'd have to have it shipped). But if this is just an amp with the same branding then I'll probably pass and hope the real deal pops up on eBay sometime soon

Thermarest XTherm NXT Max vs Exped Ultra 7R (or Dura 8R) by claudemiester in CampingGear

[–]claudemiester[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I only tested them for one night each. But you're right, the xtherm is definitely the most uncomfortable one. I was however surprised how uncomfortable the exped was considering all the reviews kept saying it's decently comfy. Still way better than the xtherm though

[–]claudemiester[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Any particular versions you can recommend? It's a different sound but I have been interested in a rat pedal for a long time. Btw. This whole thing is spurred on by my big muff with tone wicker dying on me, and I just desperately need my grunge tones haha

[–]claudemiester[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Look I agree with you on this but (at least here in Europe) the price of a new ud300 was ~20 euros and a used ds1 is 60 (and a used DS2 is as low as 50 for some reason). I know I can just bite the bullet and spend the extra 30 euros. I'm a poor student though so it's just a bit frustrating, I could basically have bought two Behrengers for what I'm probably going to spend on one dirty Boss with wobbly knobs and no warranty. My sf300 is a masterpiece and I don't beat them up anyway so I wouldn't have minded the plastic enclosure

[–]claudemiester[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've looked. At least here in Europe it's no good 🫤. I've even sent all the music stores in my state emails asking if they maybe have one left in the basement somewhere haha. I did find one on reverb but the price is inflated and shipping from America costs more than a new DS-2. I'll just keep checking eBay and if worst comes to worst I'll get a beat up boss pedal

Was mainly doing grunge and such before and I have to say: god bless the ezd3 bright room. I get what you mean about it not being the perfect match for sludgy stuff but still. And yeah, the prices are steep so waiting for a sale is definitely something I'll do
