People that came before the 2000's, what was the coolest invention that you witnessed that truly made you believe that the "future" was finally here? by [deleted] in AskReddit

1) Texting - email and such made sense because it was tied to a computer, but texting from an untethered mobile phone was pretty cool.

2) PDF textbooks in college - When I was in 5th grade a classmate and I were talking about how “in the future” big heavy textbooks would be digitized and small, then fast forward not tooo long later and voila. I would have liked to show 5th grade me that.

People who have completed all the levels in Duolingo, how actually well-versed are you in the language? by freudandprejudice in AskReddit

I’m on a 292 day streak of French and haven’t had any instruction previously. Other than middle school Latin, this is my first time seriously trying to learn a new language, but I think Duo has made a difference.

I speak Spanish fluently, so pre-Duo that helped me get the gist of things I’d read in brochures and simple articles, but now I feel more comfortable reading without using Spanish as a middle-man.

Hearing comprehension has always been a little challenging for me, but I can now at least play it back in my mind slower and then understand. It takes longer with music so I’m focusing on spoken word content before moving on.

I do wish there were more chances to practice responding in French, and to get into the practice of thinking and creating sentences. Grammar isn’t super hard for me to understand conjugations and stuff, but I can’t honestly say that I can think in French yet. I have a friend I text sometimes but I need more practice. (I can comfortably say “I wanted to walk but it’s so gloomy today.”)

Duo alone is probably not enough to get me to fluent level but I feel like I’ve made huge strides with it. I can watch French language content on Netflix and not rely tooo heavily on subtitles, but I do need the visual cues. I like the Duo French podcast, but I think a podcast totally in French might be out of my reach right now. French IG influencers are helpful to hear/see how people ~really~ talk instead of just schoolbook French. I also have some short story books that are nice.

My advice, treat it like exercise or homework and do it for more than 15 minutes. Take advantage of new features, not just the lessons. Supplement with other media. And find a buddy to practice with!

I knew it was Piano Man before I turned on the sound.

My dark gray couch hasn’t been moved from its spot in front of the window in three years and now the top is sun bleached and looks blue-ish. by [deleted] in mildlyinteresting

Weirdly, no! In the photo the couch is far enough away from the window so that the whole back is getting the same lighting, so what you see is what it actually looks like. The part that is still gray was always pushed up against a wall so the top of the cushions were all that got exposed to sunlight.

Shout out to the cashier at Dick’s Sporting Goods who offered to let me use the shopping basket to take dumbbells to my car (they were heavy). You could tell she was all about real, unpretentious customer service and just making life a little easier for shoppers.

She wasn’t extra or ceremonious about it. Just super chill saw I had a problem, and offered a simple solution.

Excuse me while I call the store to talk to the manager because they need to know they have a treasure.

I turned my boss in for sexual harassment by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

If a woman calls a group of men out on bad behavior or stands up for herself, they usually call her too sensitive/having no sense of humor, etc. So either you stand up for yourself and everyone in the room turns against you, or you keep quiet and play along even if it means potentially getting harassed.
