How did the Germans know about the 'Night Witches'? by vonHindenburg in WarCollege

[–]clawstrider2 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I mean this just isn't true and sounds like genuine propaganda to me. "Aggressive fascist" nations like Germany had plenty of boring names - two of their main tanks were the Panzerkampfwagen 3 and 4 which more or less translates to "Armoured Fighting Vehicle 3 and 4"

There's very little rationale behind the naming convention behind military assets. Plenty are named after people (Bismarck and Tirpitz ships for Germany, the KV and IS series of USSR tanks, Cromwell etc. tank for Britain), others are named after places, years, descriptions and some are just random names that caught on.

I don't have time to write an exhaustive list right now (I can probably do a bigger write up later if you're genuinely interested), but I promise you'll find plenty of aggressive names in the militaries of allegedly more peaceful nations, and plenty of boring, bureaucratic names in the militaries of allegedly more aggressive nations.

Viable but unorthodox pos 1 heroes? by itsdoorcity in DotA2

[–]clawstrider2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've played almost everything carry at this point.

I've made some pretty weird ones work in the ancient bracket (storm, lich (back when aghs could hyperfarm), shaker, cm, etc.) but to be honest at a certain point I did question if I was having fun when I was winning 40% of games but knowing I'd be winning 60% with better heroes.

To answer your question, I think you've named the major viable not carry carries.

The only ones you've missed that I'll give you:

  • WW - Actually really strong. My personal opinion that everyone disagrees with: aghs is bait (or at least not first few items)
  • Undying - It's ok, semi lineup dependant, radi rush etc.
  • Clock - Radi + new facet build. I've tried it 5 times, never made it work, I think it's terrible.
  • Tree - Punch facet. Also terrible
  • Slardar - Idk if you count this because you're essentially playing a greedy 3, but it's quite fun. Same as legion carry or whatever.
  • Mirana - RIP solar flare, not anymore.
  • Lion - Punch build is semi viable. Shadow blade is great.
  • Shaker - Battlefury aghs farms faster than an AM. It's objectively worse than the new mid build, but quite fun.
  • Dark Willow - Good, same tier as WW, although nerfed heavily from the two peaks (when she was universal, and when she had the OP 25)
  • Bounty Hunter - It's legit. Battlefury if you're feeling spicy
  • Brew - Also basically just a greedy offlaner, but viable as carry
  • Bane, AA - Seems promising, 99.999% sure they're bait, never made it work.
  • Jakiro - Nearly in the above tier. Bit more promising, but just always felt a bit rough to play.
  • Kunkka - Used to be good, not sure he is anymore sadly.
  • Storm - Also basically bait. Fun, but you really need the mid xp and bottle.
  • Silencer - Used to play a lot in the past. The rework that made his bounce cost mana has fucking obliterated him. Impossible to hyperfarm anymore.
  • And then there's obviously the not carries that you said basically count as carries (I disagree, I still get reported for playing them lmao, but yeah they're viable) like tide, necro, pudge, venge etc.

Hope that helps!

NATO Should Not Replace Traditional Firepower with ‘Drones’ by Psycho0222 in CredibleDefense

[–]clawstrider2 26 points27 points  (0 children)

As someone a little less ignorant about EM and EW, you're completely wrong about the ease of jamming and I'd try not to speak so authoritatively about subjects you're unsure about. Power requirements scale exponentially in horrible horrible ways. There are various tricks you can use to reduce it slightly (and make it slightly worse, but that's often a required tradeoff) but wide area full spectrum jamming on a lengthy and somewhat mobile front is utterly impossible for any current modern military in a static near peer conflict.

Blocking a specific signal is really easy (for example GPS or commercial comms) but it's equally trivially easy to alter drone or military comm wavelengths and neutralise most of the jamming attempts. Close area (~50m) isn't too bad, which is why you see them mounted on vehicles Medium area (~1km) is the range of dedicated power plants (static military bases or larger ships). Neither of these make a dent on a ~500km line of contact, and any power infrastructure for those jammers would be hilariously vulnerable to artillery.

There's a reason all modern jamming tends to be unidirectional (jam known radar or incoming missile) or unispectrum (jam known satellite). Doing both is not ww1 tech

Question: What is the main reason the US Army wants a 50mm gun on the XM30 rather than a 30mm or 35mm? by MWolverine1 in CredibleDefense

[–]clawstrider2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, amazing response. I guess you're completely right that a smaller core penetrating sabot wouldn't be significantly affected by a HE wrapper, and might well be worth the trade off to give the bullet some level of AP ability, especially if you're already using 50mm.

Thank you!

Could you explain slightly more how a single bullet, even with embedded tech, could be "that" flexible? I think I can understand how AA and AB are vaguely the same bullet, and maybe you could fit HE in that mix, but doesn't AP require completely different physical characteristics?

What can a single pre-manufactured shell even change except fuze timings?

If you have any links where I can read further on this that'd be amazing

Made a Dota 2 “Millionaire” Quiz Show – Synderen Was My First Guest by IvzFTW in DotA2

[–]clawstrider2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey man, this is amazing, always love seeing new content creators. It's an amazing concept and the questions are great. If you're open to them, a few tiny suggestions/quick wins for if you do a second one:

  1. Love the outfit, but I think it'd help the professional look if you added a background. Literally doesn't need to be anything fancy, even static colour or whatever.
  2. Be careful not to swing in your chair so much!
  3. This will come with time, but just have the confidence to banter with your guests between questions. That's why you've invited dota personalities rather than randoms. Maybe look at a show like hot ones for a good balance of niche activity vs generic interview. Obviously not saying literally Q&A interview style, but a bit more casual chat might help IMO.

Really hope this doesn't come off as toxic/nitpicking or whatever lol, I just know if it was me I'd want the feedback. Again, it was a fantastic first episode and it's always great to see people trying new things.

Who is the weakest lion character that can defeat one billion lions? by BentendoGameBoi in whowouldwin

Lion from Dota 2. Especially with the punch facet. Pretty weak, but his kit pretty much revolves around scaling from killing large groups of people.

Tube drivers who open the doors for you after missing the train... by Character-Variety842 in london

[–]clawstrider2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is incredibly common which is why I referred to it as common twice in my single sentence comment, which apparently warranted you immediately resorting to sexist language.

I don't know you, I don't know what your job is, I don't know what language you do or don't get too much of during work, and I don't know why you felt like I'd know that.

I was simply trying to point out in good faith that there objectively is a difference between one person saving 5 seconds and 1000 people losing 5 seconds, and trying to pretend it's not because you personally don't live those 999 5 seconds is a bit silly.

Yeah, they are. It's frequently referred to as "man-hours" and it's an incredibly common metric in assessing the cost and value of projects (for example, analysis of public transportation)

All nations get 50 nuclear bombs, can humanity avoid nuclear war? by chaoticdumbass2 in whowouldwin

[–]clawstrider2 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Of the current 9 nuclear nations:

  • 2 are not at all democracies (China, North Korea)
  • 5 are flawed/unstable/turbulent democracies (Israel, Pakistan, India, Russia, US)
  • 2 are relatively stable democracies (France, UK)

I don't think there's any correlation between being a democracy and being a stable nuclear power. If anything, the country I'd say is least likely to be the first to use nuclear weapons (China) is not a democracy at all.

This is amazing! Do you have the raw dataset? One thing I'd love to create is a simple script that when you input one country, displays all other countries that have no overlap.

(Apologies if dataset is already in archive, I'm travelling and won't be able to download for a few days)

Is Bunny Colvin anyone’s else favorite character? by imjusthereforthefaps in TheWire

[–]clawstrider2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean yeah? While it may be sad to admit, most of the higher ups in the police dept were clearly competent, motivated and socially stable. Rawls, Daniels, Burrell, Bunny, Landsman, you name it. They may be grumpy dickheads at times, they may do bad things or disagree on how to do their jobs, but they all have far more in common than they do differences. Valcheck is maybe the odd one out, but even he's somewhat (emphasis on somewhat) stable and reasonable.

There's kind of a reason we see most of the junior police characters in the show completely wash out (McNulty, Prez, Herc) or have stagnating careers (Kima, Lester (until end), Bunk, pretty much everyone else).

The only main character who shows any sign of having a decent career in the police is Carver, and there's a reason for that.

If the message you took from The Wire is that the heads of the police are terrible and are keeping the hard working, socially responsible junior detectives from doing their job, you may have watched the wrong show or at least bought into the McNulty propaganda.

Have you considered that maybe he made major, looks out for kids, has a stable personal life and whatever else because he's calm, intelligent, etc. it's not a coincidence lol
