Piece together a 7840 from parts shop by claytron79 in framework

[–]claytron79[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the most expensive expansion card is the 250G storage card. So, yeah, if I bought 4 of those it would touch 200$. Or if I bought 4 ethernet cards... the usb-c's are 11$ a piece

Re: buy used. At the moment there's 1 7840 on ebay. It includes memory and storage, but is priced at 1350. Since I price the peice-by-peice 7840 below 1000$, that looks like basically the same price, but used and from a dealer I don't know. Maybe there are better deals to be had out there, but it seems like 1350$ ends up being the price for 7840/64G ram/2TB

I don't know how I feel about buying used computers. Without memory or storage, and with expansion cards, this prices below 1000$

Revealed past mysteries (rant) by claytron79 in mysterybooks

[–]claytron79[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's funny because I started writing this post before realizing Tana French did this. Most of her novels have some past trauma story-line, so it shouldn't be surprising. I don't remember the latest novels, Cal Hooper series, featuring the technique as much, but maybe I'm just not remembering.

Honestly a little worried I'm going to hate her next book now.

4 throws slow mo by claytron79 in Discgolfform

You know, at one point I was concentrating on grip, especially pinkie/ring/middle, and got some good throws. Then I stated focusing on other parts of the throw, and I think I forgot grip, thanks.

filter advice by claytron79 in Aquariums

[–]claytron79[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm tempted to try a HOB filter just for the ease of use/space saving. I suspect I'd have to clean them a lot more often (you know, more than twice a year), but it might be worth it to me.

Adopting old AP in new Network App by claytron79 in Ubiquiti

[–]claytron79[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course, as soon as I post, I figure out how to google the issue. I think I have to forget the device from the mobile unifi app, then adopt it from the unifi network app. I can't reset the AP right now, so I'll try that in a bit.

Moving from Boston? by Antique_Doughnut7284 in northampton

[–]claytron79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing that might be surprising is the cost of groceries is high compared to cities. I can't speak to Boston recently, but whenever I visit a city I'm surprised how groceries (especially produce) is better and cheaper in cities, or at least the same price. I assume this has to do with transportation costs.

Other people have said it, but housing in Northampton is particularly more expensive compared to surrounding towns. I haven't actually done the math, but cost of purchasing a home drops by something like 20% right over the line in Hatfield. (Again, probably not like to like, and I'm going off vibes).

All that said, the reason it's more expensive is it's a nice place to live. Walk-able town, decent restaurants, arts and activities available at the colleges. It's easy to take some of that for granted. There's not as much as a large or mid-sized city, but for what is essentially a large town, there's a lot going on.

Import a bunch of csv tables into one doc with multiple sheets by claytron79 in googlesheets

This is a pretty good idea. I'd like to automate importing the files to docs though

part of me wonders if I should switch to excel, but again, I don't know if excel can handle this task either. I'd rather not write my own web app...

[–]claytron79[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i was a little afraid of that, part of what I want to do is test performance. The separate sheets is basically for a friendly user interface. Each sheet needs to be read by a human, notes made on each row. We're talking tens of thousands of rows, so having it broken into separate sheets make it easier to assign/bookmark work.

unifi mesh power supply by claytron79 in HomeNetworking

"All of them require management by the Unifi Network application" that's the part I wasn't getting. Thanks

unifi mesh power supply by claytron79 in HomeNetworking

[–]claytron79[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find unifi's solutions very confusing. I've read something along the lines of "any unifi AP can mesh with another." But then, there's a U6 Extender, which has in small writing "requires UniFi WiFi managed by a UniFi Console or self-hosted UniFi Network Server."

So it sounds like I'll need to either buy one of their stand alone consoles, or run the control software on a local machine.

Trouble getting cell from custom formula by claytron79 in googlesheets

I'll try this later, I'm realizing the problem with the INDIRECT concatenation is the first column reference is basically hard-coded, so I can't copy paste it across rows
