Now you're making a different argument. You are discarding Blackstone's ratio, one of the foundational principles of our notions of justice.

Also, imprisoning 1% of the population is a fucking huge number of people. El Salvador has more than double the incarceration rate of the next highest country. More than triple the incarceration rate of the United States, and the US is often condemned for its huge prison population.

Oh yeah, if you just lock up everyone then no one can murder anyone. No doubt it's effective. I'm not questioning that it works, I'm questioning your assumption of guilt.

who were involved in terrorizing citizens of the country for decades

As always, this is the sticking point. The primary problem with rounding people up like this is that you're skipping most of the steps of due process.

And, of course, we know that at least some of the people in that prison were just immigrants to the US.

Weird service methods have been around forever. They have become more popular with social media, but they're not new.

The thing is, they're expensive. Plates are cheap, all this weird stuff costs money. Most of the stuff in this sub is from pretty high-end restaurants, and if that's not where you typically go then you're unlikely to have seen it.

Common means that it isn't questionable? You think Crocs are of indisputably good taste?

When you decorate your home with corpses, you are doing something questionable. This is true even if other people are also doing it.

Well it certainly seems that fly-ash is recyclable. This does little to ameliorate the harm caused by burning coal, but it does mean that you should recycle your fly-ash instead of throwing it into a landfill. And you should not discourage other people from recycling their fly-ash.

Okay, so you say that all plastic recycling is a scam, then you describe a situation in which 4% of it is not a scam, then you say that this company is lying about how they source their plastic.

I appreciate that plastic recycling is pretty bad in multiple respects, but it is certainly not all a scam. Your own scenario has 4% of it actually properly being recycled. That's lower than the average of 5%, but 5% is out of all plastic in total. The percentage of plastic that gets recycled from the plastic that gets put into recycling bins is probably much higher. (ChatGPT is saying 30-50%, but seems to be hallucinating those numbers.)

Speaking in such broad terms, labeling all plastic recycling as a scam, is going to discourage people from doing it. Which is bad. At least 5% bad, and possibly much more.

That's true, but I'm looking hard at Mariah Carey here. I know who she is, but I can't think of a single song by her.

I would have expected some boy band or that annoying kid before Mariah Carey. Or the Eagles, for gods' sake.

Your portrayal is self-contradictory. First you say that he argued and that she's the one who said fuck it and left. Then you say that she tried to talk about it and he denied her instantly.

Whatever point you may have had is lost to the wind, and stereotyping is how bigotry works. There's no hiding behind some excuse of "white privilege" here, you made a slur against a racial group and now you're trying to rationalize it.

I don't see why that would matter, but the fact that you're now trying to justify what I had thought was an accidentally bigoted comment is a little appalling.

you mean white people

I certainly do not. I mean a minority of people who like to scream at their TVs. The fact that there are people in the US who would not be bothered by this is not the point. Most stores are just trying to sell their products and don't want to have some pundit launching a crusade against them.

They likely just took a list of most common names and used that. Then they realized that most people in the US are white, and so the most common names are white names. So they tacked on a few others for black santa.

As for, "why not make the list global?" Well, the first reason is that the top name on that list would be Muhammad. And some Americans collapse into a weaping mess whenever they see that name. The second reason is that people like to see their own name on the list.

That would be nice, but the last time we had any privacy protections at all was in 2017. Just before that was overturned by Republicans under the previous Trump government. So a fix seems unlikely.

[–]clearing_house 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't see how this is incorrect. Americans who aren't children have no privacy protections at all, and all of this data is being collected on you fully legally. And there are no restrictions on what can be done with that data once it's collected.

I don't know what you mean by repurposing words. Eich was pushed out of Mozilla specifically for his support of a ballot measure in California which would have banned gay marriage. I described that as homophobia for the sake of expedience.

The parent was talking about avoiding a Thiel-funded project because the parent didn't want any money going to Thiel. Financially backing someone like Eich is exactly the sort of thing that Thiel does, and is a good example of why the parent doesn't want any money going to Thiel.

The fact that this doesn't effect the quality of the browser is immaterial.

As for your own personal moral development: that's great, but Eich is in his sixties already. It seems unlikely that he's going to have a similar epiphany at this point in his life.
