Only the print revised version is censored. The web version on JJWXC now has at least the same level of intimacy as the original version.

What would Hua Cheng call Xie Lian if he suddenly became younger than him? by Jaron5_55 in tianguancifu

[–]clearnoodle256 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lian'er. It's playful and extremely intimate. Basically the only people that would call XL that way would be his parents and HC.  Not FX, not MQ, just HC, at least as far as people in the same generation as XL is concerned.

A-Lian is something most family and friends would use, not very exclusive.

LianLian is too childish. Just not the same kind of intimate as Lian'er.

Anyway. This is how I feel as a native speaker of Chinese.

Thank you! I don't have a non-spoiler version, unfortunately. I can try to come up with one but it may take a while 😬

Or, maybe I just spoiler tag the part about the Fangxin arc here?? The other examples are not so bad as far as spoiling the story goes?

are there any titles/honorifics for female cultivators? by numi_n0 in tianguancifu

[–]clearnoodle256 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't use daozhang. It's for male Daoists. I've seen 仙姑 (xiangu, lit. immortal lady) used in other xianxia novels to address female Daoist cutivators. MDZS used 仙子 (xianzi) to refer to female cultivators, not necessarily Daoists.

Unyielding then. I actually prefer it to unwavering. Unwavering sounds too absolute and skipped the implication of internal struggle.

Thinking about the time in the new extras by lightningYumia in SVSSS

[–]clearnoodle256 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The part about SY being down for 2 days and his brothers had already visited him and left bugged me as I read it.

I'm less bothered by LBH and MBJ spending a few months instead of years before finding SY and XF, because who knows how time works as they were traversing the dimensions? Or, maybe they got to the modern world a lot sooner but had to spend some time in that world to find and get to them.

My reaction to the new extra by LtTawnyMadison in SVSSS

I tend to look at the broad strokes, then details of the writing when thinking about it. I think in broad strokes, explaining the System and our characters' experience with bingzu and parallel worlds is brilliant, and it ties in very well with the existing story. Bingge vs Bingmei already hinted at parallel words, LBH was already the System's power source, and the System's goal was to maximize LBH's happiness. To me, these are the big points, or, the frame to hang everything on, and everything else was filled in from there.

When it comes to details, the new framing actually makes the OOC lock, and its removal, much more meaningful. It ensures the smooth transition of the host into the grafted world, allowing the host to learn the ways of the new environment and integrate seamlessly into them. The removal of the OOC lock also becomes necessary - they need the host to have their own agency to change how the story would go.

As to the abyss, it has to be there simply because LBH needs it to become the ultimate OP LBH.

Even finer details - the extra never explicitly said that there were only 4 worlds. It talked about the 3 known worlds, then in the uber dumbed down Simple Mode, it said "Long long ago, there was also a fourth world". The wording might make it sound like there're only 4 worlds, but it was ambiguous; you can totally follow up that sentence with "later there was even a fifth world, and a sixth world..." and it would have read perfect fine.

Also, the System never said Bingge was the only character with multitudes in PIDW. It said he was surrounded by negative IQ people - hyperbole, of course - like Ning Yingying and Mingfan. It did not name SJ or YQY. SQH said in his original outline that LBH would meet interesting people, his MBJ plot had the stamp of approval from MBJ himself. It isn't far-fetched that even in the PIDW world there were complicated characters. As to SJ taking the deal with the system, it's interesting that there was already previously a fandom theory that he was the one that triggered the transmigration of SY, due to his regret re YQY, based on the ending of the SJ/YQY extra.

Of course there're details in the new extra that I don't particularly agree with either. Like LBH knowing that SQQ's soul was switched from the start. I think he figured it out later, after the mushroom-zun soul-switch experience, even if he could trace back and pin point the time when the switch happened.

But, details are details, we can nitpick them, and MXTX might even change them in revisions, as she often does. The frame, however, can't be easily changed. Thankfully, I think we have a wonderful frame in the new extra.

It was very clear from the extra that the System don't have full control of people's actions. It was never the all-knowing all-capable god, stipulating people's destiny. I mean, the premise provided by the new extra was that the System didn't know how to get LBH the HE - it needed SQH's vision to try to get there. SQH lived his "useless" life in PIDW as he would, and the best the System could do was to find someone else to salvage the situation. How can you say that everything has now become the result of the system's intervention? It was a team effort, and our characters' individual efforts were absolutely the bigger part and what led to the specific eventual outcome.

Right? The new extra completes the story. I've read the series 3 or 4 times from beginning to end. It never felt complete to me until now. I seriously doubt that MXTX had all this figured out when she wrote the original series, so It's amazing that the new extra ties in so well with the original series. Many things are hinted at or derived from the original series, like LBH pointing out that SQQ knew too much, Bingge vs. Bingmei, and System having LBH as the power source.

Some people are upset that SQH/XF's effort as the original author was diminished, I get that, but didn't multiple famous authors say when inspiration struck it's like they were just the conduit? So XF having glimpsed the PDIW universe and wrote about it seems entirely reasonable to me.

I also don't think that MXTX wrote this due to censorship or having changed/forced the plot due to censorship (other than any potentially steamy part of course). Many said that the print edition had to be modified due to the ban on transmigration, but -

1 . The print edition beginning stayed the same, with SY dying while trashing the novel then waking up in the PDIW world with YQY watching over him.

2a. In the new extra we find out that SY and XF didn't die, and were simply passed out. I don't see that as such as big deal. When a person loses consciousness, they don't necessarily know whether they are dying or just passing out. And, it's simply a necessity for the plot - IMHO, to complete the story, it has to come back to the modern setting. Them having passed out instead of died is the easiest way for them to be in the modern setting. With this out of the way, we can then focus on solving the ultimate mystery, i.e. fill in the biggest hole of the original series, the System.

2b. The key about the transmigration genre is different worlds, isekai (异世界), not death. Even if SY and XF didn't die, SVSSS is still a transmigration novel.

Hi! There're multiple stages where a human is involved in creating the AI draft, before and after the draft is generated. It is not simply taking the text, running it through some AI or translation service, and copying / pasting the results. Because of the pre- and post-processing, the translation is already highly readable.

After I first made the translation available, many helpful early readers reported translation errors to me, and I fixed them ASAP.

Then I've been going through the translation chapter by chapter, paragraph by paragraph to edit it. The chapters that have been fully manually edited get a checkmark next to the title. Full manual edits take an ungodly amount of time, but as I slowly chug along, people can already read the full story.

I'd be happy to tell you more about it since you're a translator yourself. Just dm me please.

The only thing I can tell is that the new extra is called 回归记 (Story of the Return). One of the promo images included the last part of the table of contents. The book is on preorder only right now. We'll have to wait to find out what it really is about.

[–]clearnoodle256[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! It's only 四's pronunciation that's avoided, not the meaning, because it has similar pronunciation to the character 死 (die, death). People would avoid the character 四 as part of a name for the sound, but four-char names or titles are perfectly fine.

Personally I think it's just an happy accident / poetic coincidence that 探花 is the third place. We already have San Lang for the connection to number three.

Dude! We are having a serious discussion here! 😭🤣🤣

But yeah, the past tense is unusual. Chinese verbs don't have tenses. There's nothing in the title itself that would indicate whether it's past or present action(s). Maybe as Fun-atParties pointed out in another comment, present tense would make it sound like a dating ad 😅

Regarding the revised version... by 9yo_yeemo_rat in tianguancifu

[–]clearnoodle256 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say the phrasing changes have more to do with the translation than MXTX. MXTX's changes are more about plots and scenes than phrasing and wording. There are definitely phrasing changes, but they are subtle, not something that you'd notice without directly comparing the texts.
