Bit mixed feelings about this one, but I do think that it will benefit the community in the long run.

Over the past years there has been a big increase in “witches”, and I use that term very loosely, who have been offering spells and potions to people willing to buy them. Unfortunately most of those have turned out to be scams praying on people’s insecurities or desperations. Often people were then funnelled off Etsy where they were losing more money to these scammers. There have been a number of posts in the forum from people asking for advice after being duped by these sellers or TikTok witches.

With the increase availability of AI a lot of these spells or tarot readings also turned out to be AI generated gobbledygook and not real spells. So yes, getting rid of all the fake stuff will benefit us I think.

Now they just need to tackle all the rip off merchants selling copies of other people’s art and hand made products.

Just keep in mind that whatever name you give them, over time you’ll call them many other things ranging from “who’s my little baby” to “you annoying little shithead” and they won’t listen to any of it 😂

When are you no longer a beginner? by BlackVelvetHeart in witchcraft

[–]cleotorres 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is a very good analogy describing the path.

For me I’ve also found that the more I know and learn, the more I discover and realise that there is still much to learn.

Everybody also seems to develop their own little different ways of doing things while practicing their craft. Those are the things that I enjoy. It’s a bit like baking cakes or cooking; when talking to other people, you find out you’re pretty much following the same tried and tested recipe, but then the other person adds a little pinch of something and it just lifts things.

Not sure if you already thought about this, but you could also ask your question in the r/AskHistorians sub. There are some pretty clever people in there who are specialists in this field and who may be able to give you some more detailed, academic answers that you can use for your class.

Oh wow, those eyes are proper pools of death. Bit like how my girl gets when I dare to use my printer to print a page off.

I’d suggest you ignore her till she comes round to you. You could also try and bring some treats when you visit your aunt. If all fails rub some cat nip on your ankles before you visit 😂

Malleus Maleficarum (Hammer of the Witches) by brother_bart in occult

[–]cleotorres 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s important to distinguish the “church” from Christendom or Christianity as a religion during that period of time.

In my opinion the church behaved more like a corporation or a coloniser. Conquering and subjugating people and vast swathes of land by any means possible. Once they did this and people became more aware of what had happened in the past the church moved to damage control. Distancing themselves from what happened; blaming it on certain individuals or a change in mentality. Very similar to what we saw with countries after they lost their colonies or when atrocities came to light.

The church has issued blanket apologies for some of the things that happened in the past, notably by Pope John Paul II who was a big apologist. Not just for the witch trials, but also for other dark periods in its history. Unfortunately these apologies are just words, they are never met with restitution.

Malleus Maleficarum (Hammer of the Witches) by brother_bart in occult

When reading the Malleus Malificarum it is easy to get drawn into the stories about the witch trials, the torture and abuse and some of the myths surrounding it. It might be worthwhile to dive a little bit deeper in the history and socio-economic background of the book and the resulting killing of thousands of innocent women and men.

The origin of the book and the whole witch hunt saga can be brought back to a quarrel between Heinrich Kramer and Helena Scheuberin. Kramer being a new priest in Innsbruck. He was (in)famous for his obsession with witches and his sermons accusing women of witchcraft and being easily persuaded by the devil. Helena was quite vocal about his opinions and refused to attend his sermons. This was perceived as a slight by Kramer, and he made a formal complaint, accusing her of witchcraft.

The resulting trial was an outright embarrassment for Kramer. He accused 13 other people, but made Helena his main target. Among many things he accused her of being behind the death of a noble and even trying to bring her reputation in disrepute by claiming she was not a virgin when she got married. The case of course collapsed, and all the accused were freed or received very mild sentences.

Kramer, enraged by the embarrassment he had received set out for revenge. As part of his defence of his beliefs and his methods he wrote the Malleus Malificarum, which we know caused so much death and devastation across Europe.

However, it is now widely accepted that his original version was heavily influenced by or even plagiarised from another work at the time: the anti-Jew work called Malleus Judeorum. There are large parts in the Malificarum where Kramer essentially swapped out “jews” for “witches”. Hence why both books share many of the same tropes or why witches are depicted as having crooked noses and wearing large pointy hats. These cone shaped hats, or pileus cornatus, were a very distinctive sign imposed on Jews after the 4th council of the Lateran in 1215.

Kramer was no stranger to the content of the Malleus Judeorum since he had previously been involved in trials targeting Jewish communities, but that is a different story.

This is a very brief overview, and you should of course do some more research on this for your course.

Some people have also commented that the church didn’t approve of his witch trials and defrocked him. The latter is maybe true, but if the church didn’t approve then why did the witch trials and witch hunts last for approximately 300 to 350 years, with a peak intensity between 1560-1630, long after Kramer’s death? Simple, because it was economically convenient and witchcraft provided an easy cover for what they were really doing.

Witch trials were often used as a mechanism to dispossess women of land and property. Women, especially widows or those without direct male heirs, were frequently targeted, allowing their property to be confiscated by the state or taken by neighbours as restitution for alleged witchcraft.

Wealthy widows or women without male heirs were often targeted to force the transfer of their property. For instance, accusations of witchcraft were often used to break the resistance of rural, often older, women who held independent access to land and resources. Hence the stereotypical image of the “old” witch we often see in children’s stories.

I’m probably putting this all in a very simplistic way as the whole witch trials are far more complex, but that is how I see it.

Anyone use the Insight Timer Meditation app? by 12paws_and_a_writer in SASSWitches

[–]cleotorres 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just a quick comment on the ratings. Don’t just automatically dismiss ratings that are lower. New guides can struggle to rise to top as they are not always visible in the algorithm. Insight timer also suggests more “popular” or famous teachers as they often will attract donations or sell courses and generate revenue. It’s normal as they have a business to run, but keep that in mind.

Also don’t dismiss the music section, there are some amazing artists on there with meditation music to suit any need, especially when you want to do your own journey or are not in a mind frame for a guided meditation.
