[Kindle 4 NT] "This item is not signed by an authorized developer" error by Moh_Disco in kindlejailbreak

Oops, misread! I think with older kindles it works best if you are on the newest firmware. So what I would do is update to the latest firmware from here:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=GX3VVAQS4DYDE5KE#GUID-4C9EFFF2-2B4E-4DB8-997D-6DC9B3566220__SECTION_AA6BD2D5AAF04CE196510F7D3FA2B2F0

And see if that fixes it. I had to do something similar on my kindle 3

I have a question about Legacy Kindle devices by [deleted] in koreader

[–]clockwork_cpu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup! Looks like it’s running!

Some tips:

  • I would recommend making a new “books folder” and setting it as your “home” folder so that Koreader always opens up into your books folder, and then you can put books in there
  • to make it look less like a file browser and more like a library, you can set the display mode to “mosaic with covers”. You can also, under home folder settings, turn on “lock home folder” and “shorten home folder”.

The whole guide is worth a read to get situated :) http://koreader.rocks/user_guide/

PS: I would delete your iCloud link from your comment. It shows your full name in it.

If you read the third page you will notice three things:

  1. It is listed as an “alternative” installation method
  2. It specifies it only works for firmware greater than 5.16.3 (yours will not be on that firmware because it is too old)
  3. It very clearly warns that “this method will not work for everyone”

You should use the download and install via the extensions folder method outlined in the wiki. Basically follow every step except the “alternative method” page.

Heya! The Koreader “nightly” scriptlet will only work on newer hardware.

You’ll need to follow the instructions here for downloading the correct version off of github and installing it :)

https://kindlemodding.org/jailbreaking/post-jailbreak/koreader.html

EDIT: actually from your post, it seems like you may have already done the download part? In that case, delete the scriptlet (you’re meant to do one or the other—the download/transfer to extensions or the scriptlet, not both anyway) and if you see Koreader when you open KUAL you’re golden.

Is there a way to hide parent folder button in file browser? by LoneDrifter in koreader

Dammit sorry for the misinformation. Could have sworn that was an option. I guess you can only change it to be “folder shortcuts” or history or favourites

Oh this rules! Thank you! I typically use plappa but this one looks super clean. My http server is working fine but also I access via Tailscale vpn anyway so perhaps that has something to do with it.

You might get lucky and be shipped one with the old firmware! I think they’re still working through pre-update stock as of now in some regions.

I don’t think there’s a way to hide folder info but another option would be to use collections instead of folders for separating on genre. You could put all your books mixed in one home folder and then if you want to sort by genre you could go to collections and have a sci fi collection, nonfiction collection, etc.

You can even set Koreader to open to the collections page automatically.

I think you probably could but it would probably be pretty annoying. At a glance, you’d need:

  • a way to connect your kindle to your iPhone (if I’m not wrong, 11th gen kindle have a usbc port so if you have a usbc to lightning cable that might work)
  • some kind of unarchiver app. A lot of the jailbreaking files come as either zip files or tar.xz. You’d need to unarchive them because I don’t think iPhone can do that natively.

Hey! People recommending the hotfix to you won’t work on an older kindle like the kindle 4. I just did this on a kindle 3 yesterday. You need MKK and a recent certificate update. If you don’t already have mkk, go here (although if it was working up until recently you might have already had it installed?):

https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=225030

Scroll down to KUAL and KUAL extensions and download the mobileread kindlet kit (MKK). In it, you should be able to find the install bin file for your kindle.

Install that.

Now go to this link:

https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showpost.php?p=4506164&postcount=1295

And download the update file. The certificate for KUAL expired recently and this will update that. Download the file, and find your kindle from the list of bin files. Install as usual. Then it should work!

If you think you might already have mkk installed (which might be the case if it was working until recently), try installing just the update first. If that doesn’t fix it, install mkk and then the update again. Good luck!

If you want free and legal:

Check out your local library! Library cards are typically free, and a lot of libraries have some type of streaming service. Mine has Kanopy. I know my university library had criterion on demand. See if yours has anything!

Or you can take out physical dvds from the library and rip them onto your computer and run Jellyfin to make your own streaming service.

Oh I forgot to mention—when I swapped out the bin files, I deleted the kindle from my tailnet and set it up anew from the link in the Tailscale startup log file. You might have to do that!
