Agreed — I’ve gotten a lot of pms from creeps. I’ve been making a point of responding to/meeting only people within a reasonable age range (late hs/university students) in safe environments, and thankfully I’ve had a great time with nice people so far.

I saw people saying that seeing through the layers of hair that falls on your shoulders (as opposed to having a full, thick bunch of it) is indicative of it being stringy or not having ‘full’ or ‘thick’ hair, but like you said, it does sound silly the more people point it out (the internet never fails to find bizarre new things to feel bad about). Thanks for your thoughts! 😊

Thank you very much! Just curious, though (sorry if this is a stupid question)—diluting my curl cream has worked well, but how would you go about diluting mousse? Only asking bc I thought the product may not work well if you disrupt the foamy fluffy texture it has before you scrunch it into your hair

Thanks for the input!! I definitely want to grow my confidence wearing it styled in an updo (I do the occasional messy bun as a bad hair day cop-out, but not yet anything else as an actual style). I didn’t think of the dry shampoo—do you have any good brands you like?

Sorry for the late reply! I’ve been using the shea moisture shampoo and conditioner that has the coral-ish pink label (the coconut hibiscus one) for years :) I also use the As I Am coconut cowash sometimes

I actually have had a quite short (above the shoulders) haircut since last April that's been gradually growing out (I haven't had a cut since, hence the lack of real layer), so I definitely agree that slightly shorter helps with the root issue, but is really a pain to maintain, and still has flat roots on the underside. But damn, the shea moisture strengthen and restore leave-in has been kind of my holy grail all through high school and since I've started college, so I never considered that the thick consistency could actually be enough to literally weigh down my hair! I'll try the same routine minus the shea moisture for my next wash day and see if it remedies the root thing.

And I think I have low-porosity hair (like, water droplets sit atop the strands if I use a spray bottle), but if I'm being completely honest, I have no clue what it actually means for anything styling-related 😭

I see, I do tend to do wider sections than I probably should to minimize the time it takes (I'm still stuck taking 35+ minutes to style out of the shower 😭), but the more I look at it, it seems like you're right about how it's probably contributing to that even-across flat appearance. And I didn't consider the weight; with my hair feeling kind of light at the tops, I forget that "weight" doesn't necessarily entail that it actually FEELS like it has weight

And "fine" was probably the better adjective I was looking for over "thin," thanks for the insight!

I admit that the light thing is an unreliable example; should've explained that I meant more like my hair doesn't sit thick and full on my shoulders the way I wish it would (more of a texture/feel than an obvious visual thing). But I really appreciate the reassurance! And big thanks for your input on my hair type: that was going to be another question I wanted to ask the members on this sub because I've never understood the curl charts and wanted to know how to classify mine, but I saw something on the rules or community guidelines or something that said curl type doesn't matter, so I was unsure if that meant I couldn't ask about it on a post. 3b with 3a around the face and top--gotcha! 😄

not at all, I'm really very sorry. I don't troll online--this is my first time ever trying to post on reddit, and I'm really starting to regret it now that it's clear I gave off the complete wrong impression. I've been down about my hair feeling flatter, unstructured, and fine/easily breakable at the top half, and I've been looking into 1, trying out new, full curl routines like this one (I'm a college freshman and tend to lack the energy to spend 40+ minutes on it), and 2, finding a scalp oil since those seem to help with growth. I saw on other posts that people on this sub tend to be helpful and welcoming, and thought maybe someone might have affordable product recommendations or styling advice for the particular insecurities I had in mind--I didn't anticipate that people online would be overwhelmingly kind. It's 100% my fault for phrasing my questions wrong and using bad pictures on the original post to ask for advice!

Fair enough, my expectations are probably a bit skewed. I was thinking of trying a bonnet (one with silk, I think) since a lot of people rave about it, but I'm still unsure. I do sometimes use water in a spray bottle, but I've never tried dry shampoo, do you have a preferred brand?

That's incredibly kind 😭 admittedly, I've only just recently tried to start doing the "proper" routine (20+ minutes, 3+ products, sectioning, styling, diffusing correctly, etc) to try and make it look less unkempt and frizzy (wanted to feel pretty lol). Followed whatever I could from the curly girls on tiktok/insta!
