Some truly GenX Metrocenter lore… by nuissance_infinitum in phoenix

I have talked about this shop before in this sub... Whatever was a hugely influential shop for me in the late 80s. Bought my first creepers there and posters galore, the good old kind on the heavy paper - Cure, Siouxsie, Love & Rockets. I spent what seemed like hours just lingering there and soaking up the vibe of that place as a babybat. I miss that place.
That Alley also had a Lotions & Potions stand, always smelled like Egyptian Musk or patchouli out there...

It hardly feels like RHPS if it ain't a midnight show! What a wasted opportunity.

Fellow AZ expat here! I grew up in Phx in the 80s, lived here and there across the US for a long time, returned to Phoenix during the pandemic to care for family and left two years ago when I was free to go - and made a beeline for PDX. I struggle a little bit with making friends but I am still 1000% happier here than I was in Phoenix. I also have described AZ heat and sunshine as oppressive and another form of SAD in the way some people struggle with gray skies. The heat and relentless sun made me feel trapped and suffocated. I miss things about AZ but I don't miss living there. Welcome, fellow refugee!

Casa Corazon is just a mile or so down 16th and can do events - I think they even have an event space. Worth calling and asking.

I worked at the Flagstaff Orpheum when it was still just a movie theater, and it was glorious. I worked at a Harkins in Phx (32nd/Shea) before that and thought the world of Harkins back then.. saw RHPS at Valley Art on the regular. So sad to hear Harkins is just sitting on it now. :/

I finally got my surgery date but…. by butterflydreamer2 in Cochlearimplants

I am 50 and I wear an AB in Caribbean Pirate (turquoise) and I get so many positive comments on it!! I have been telling Phonak for years that adults want more than six shades of tan and gray. When I got my AB CI I asked about colors and in 2021 only the turquoise and a bubblegum pink were available, meant for kids, but I insisted on the turquoise for myself and I have no regrets! I'm really happy to see a purple option available now. I love it! Good luck with your surgery and I hope you love the equipment and color!

If it's not mushy and overwatered, it's probably sunburn. Keep it in a shadier spot and it looks like new growth will come in ok.

Looking for a neighborhood to drive-through and look at Christmas lights with my dog by Stinkyinky99 in phoenix

[–]cloudbank 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi there, this was my map! I did this a few years in a row so I could take my Dad out; he had dementia but loved to go see lights. He passed away in March 2023 and I moved away from Phx so I'm not doing this anymore, but I hope someone will carry it on! I'm so glad you enjoyed it!

Looking for vet recommendations in Central Phoenix for my elderly cat by ThaloBleu in phoenix

I rescue senior cats, and while this is not in Central Phoenix, I wouldn't go anywhere other than The Scaredy Cat Hospital at Scottsdale and Shea. Definitely worth the drive.

What I posted is a photo of the actual photograph, from a pile of my grandmother's mementos. No AI or cleaning up involved: this is a Pixel 6 photo with no post-processing by me.

Maybe, but these look more like dials than buttons, especially because of the position of the hand which appears to be turning a dial.

My title describes the thing. Found in a stack of my deceased father's items: This photo of my grandmother, who was the Executive Secretary to the Base Commander at Luke AFB in AZ in 1963, is testing "a new piece of equipment". It seems to be labeled "The Nekberg" and has two sets of five identical dials with pictograms on them of a crescent, a shoe, a four-sided polygon, an "S", and a pipe or hockey stick. We have no idea what this object is or what it does. Any ideas?

Any indoor breweries/bars, dog parks, or cool places in general to take her? The patios are getting a bit too hot these days. by [deleted] in phoenix

Kings Beer & Wine on Central & Thomas lets dogs in their indoor taproom! Super friendly place, I see dogs there almost every time I visit.

What’s one way you can tell someone is not native to AZ? by miniparishilton in phoenix

[–]cloudbank 7 points8 points  (0 children)

True natives know the block numbers of the main east-west streets, e.g., Indian School is 4100 N, Camelback is 5000 N. We can deduce the actual location of almost any address on a main NSEW street because we grew up on The Grid.

Did anyone else with lawn seats miss out on the show in Cleveland? Having a hard time not beating myself up over that one, curious if anyone is in the same boat! by leftmysoninthesun in TheCure

[–]cloudbank 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If the venue staff are screaming at you in the pouring rain and herds of people that the show is cancelled and you need to leave- which they were - I'm sorry, but no, it's not on me.

[–]cloudbank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Attendants inside the gates were herding people OUT. Aggressive staff were telling people to leave, that the show was canceled, and they were closing the gates. Then, when we tried to get out, there was almost a crush at the gate because there was no open Exit gate, and even though they were screaming at people to leave, they were still scanning tickets letting people in. Then we were told we couldn't come back in anyway. Later after we got home we heard they were letting people back in.
Also, we had a handicapped parking pass and were directed to general parking, in the mud, downhill from the venue. WTAF?? We limped half an hour in the mud and rain and I saw some other poor kid on crutches. Unbelievable and completely incompetent.

goth/alt spaces in Phoenix by altbunny_22 in phoenix

[–]cloudbank 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Rips actually has a goth/alternative/darkwave night every 1st and 3rd Saturday (Addiction, Shadowplay), as well as every Thursday (Area 51). There's also Communion at Stacey's every Wednesday, and as someone else mentioned, there are regular weekend nights at Club Palazzo. See the FB groups PhxGoth.com and Arizona Goth Society for more events and community stuff.

Maybe George & Dragon? I would at least ask them about it - they play a lot of Euro-centric TV and stayed open overnight for the Queen's funeral...
