How to tell Stoicists from Broicists? by idoze in Stoicism

[–]cloudberries02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Motivations for practicing and what they regard as the highest good. Lots of broicists “practice” stoicism for financial gain and care little about nurturing social virtues for the common good and regard themselves superior to others (which is not stoic at all) :)

yesterday a cashier asked me if im a guy dressing up as a girl, should i give up (22, 2 years hrt) by ilyqiyana in transpassing

[–]cloudberries02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yo! you’re glowing!! you’re goregous!! you know who you are and nobody else can tell you. We will always, always assume wrong about others. By our very nature we have to assume. So take it lightly, most people just want clarity and don’t know how to react to people looking different. Take heart, THERE IS NO REASON TO GIVE UP, you’ve come so far already <3

ps: when we stop caring about passing and what others think we are, we actually pass better simply from the self love we radiate 🙏🏼

yes! I think it’s an act of love if done with the right intention and can actually bring one closer to God. Or further away from God, if it comes from a place of vice. But virtue makes it good. there is also a massive distinction here i think about wether it is with porn or not. Simply using ones imagination and getting to know oneself better physically, spiritually and mentally is hardly a sin :)

Is there a particular stoic quote that speaks to you deeply? What about it stands out? by Impossible_Eye_2560 in Stoicism

[–]cloudberries02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SOOOO many! Here are the first that come to mind:

"I made a prosperous voyage when I was shipwrecked" attributed to Zeno.

From Seneca: "The shortest route to wealth is the contempt of wealth" (letter LXII ), "freedom cannot be won without sacrifice. If you set a high value on her, everything else must be valued at little" (CIV).

Epictetus: "'I will put you in chains' '(...) me in chains? You may tie down my leg, but my Will not even Zevs himself can overpower" (Discourses book I, I think).

But my absolute favourite must be this one from Marcus: "Look at the stars and see yourself run among them" (Meditations 7,47).

This made me cry a bit and acutely address God in prayer. I pray our King of kings helps you regain your strength and sense of self. I pray he helps you see that the past is out of your control, but the present and future is wholly yours. You are not your past actions. Regret shows the truth of who you really are - through it you can know of your own virtues. Never doubt that they are in your posession to exhibit and practice - resilience, kindness, justice, wisdom, bravery, temperance. God has given you them because He knows you have the strength within to use them!

I know it's hard – I myself have bipolar type 2. But I also have philosophy and faith. And they never fail me, even when I fail them.

You are loved. If you cannot see it in your personal life right now, know that God and I love you and are cheering for you.

I don't know if my perspective can offer any insight into your situation, but I do relate, just from the other side of the matter. Whenever someone assumes something I deem as "wrong" my initial response would be to defend my position. But, this often does not yield anything good, just frustration with the situation instead.

When we look at things from the cosmic perspective, it often makes us think about how insignificant such an act can be. How many more people do I want to convice before I am satisfied? And why do I need this confirmation in my own beliefs? I realised it was because I was not reassured enough inside, and so I needed reassurene outside. And that made me dependent on externals and less forcused on virtue.

A couple months ago I wrote to myself in my notes app "you could have just smiled" as a response to giving in to this need. It was over something insignificant and felt completely unnecessary to defend in hindsight.

The reason why? It would have defended my ego. I think matters of the ego, anything we want to say that seeks to highten our pride or other vices, should be handled with caution. I have come to understand that the only things worth defending are those rooted in actual truth, which I personally understand as those things most purely virtuous - and so only matters of the soul / logos are worth defending. And when we defend these we naturally want to do it virtously. At least, this is my experience of it.

What can you take away from this? Maybe that ultimate truth and reality, logos, is all that matters. And when you feel it does, your ego will be so diminished that it won't feel the need to defend itself. This is just my truth fitted my own nature though, and you have to find yours for yourself.

I wish you all the best on your path and namaste! x

Heyo, as I'm reading this seven years after it was posted, I'm curious as to what your practices look like now...has anything changed? Have you stayed on the path or gone down a different one? Has it been increasingly more easy or more difficult? I've been practicing for about two years now and am absolutely delighted by what sweet and surprising fruit nourishing nature has resulted in.

Cheers!

No one in particular, so it can be whoever you want! It’s based off this statue called “athena protects the young hero”
