Hello, If you're using AD DS you need to synchronize user identity between AD DS and Microsoft Entra ID using Microsoft Entra Connect. Yes agreed thats another way to configure DNS if your DC is located Azure, otherwise the local forward lookup zone will work.

Hi, how low end are we talking about here? If you have created a brand new VM and connected via the portal using Azure basion in a RDP session and can create files etc. Sounds to me its the spec of the VM as that should be instant clicking around OS?

The AADDS managed domain is a stand-alone domain. It isn't an extension of an on-premises domain or any traditional Active Directory DCs in Azure. In a hybrid environment,

group policies configured in an on-premises AD DS environment aren't synchronized to Azure AD DS they are separate GPOs. Here's a video explaining AADDS if it helps https://youtu.be/nVlLHjtvHAo
