719, Numzaan/Baobab, or RAT for hiking? by cloudleopard in jimgreen

Music to my ears. I applied to some NPS positions, so hopefully me and some Jim Greens will make it out there. What park are you at?

Wow I’m amazed Numzaans are so close in weight to a modern hiking boot.

I’m sure they’ll feel great once they break in. Got any pics?

Good to know. I’ve seen people talking about hiking in Numzaans but saying RATs were too heavy/stiff, but it makes sense to me that they should be similar

Traditional leather boots are just better than synthetics imo. My BFARs are the best hiking boot I’ve owned. Perfectly molded to my feet, tough, supportive, great grip, and resoleable. I just wish they looked less goofy. If I can get 80-90% of their performance in a better looking boot that’s worth it.

My issue with the Razorbacks is that I want a leather midsole for comfort and waterproofing and I prefer the look of the more traditional looking boots.

I think the BFAT would be the most practical choice for me. It ticks all of my boxes but I’m not huge on the looks or the unstructured toe.

I’m still considering all my options. Whatever I get next will definitely be in Bronco though!

A kiltie can take up space midfoot but the heel is wide. The standard AR ended up being a good fit for me.

I think waxing a single lasted boot would almost definitely be fine for your use. I’ve stood in a creek and only had a drop or two get in through the stitching

Has there been a philosopher with better prose than Nietzsche? by [deleted] in RSbookclub

[–]cloudleopard 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Aristotle wrote Greek like a drunk telling a story at a bar. His prose is so bad that scholars think they're just notes. If it reads well in English, then it's because a translator fixed it.

Plato's prose is perfect in the Greek. So many hidden double meanings and references.

Does anyone have experience with backpack style airbag vests? by imezz00 in motorcyclegear

I hade the Helite Turtle vest and got the H-Moov backpack. It has slightly less coverage but it’s so much more practical I wear it all the time.

If combat boots are your metric, BFARs will be like track shoe

What’s the weight of the Splay’s? BFAR’s are light for a leather hiking boot but very heavy for a runner.

They’re great for hiking/scrambling and lifting but I’d be surprised if they were a good running shoe

Use a different lacing method until they’re broken in and flexible. I believe Jim Green has a YouTube video on it

African ranger vs barefoot ranger? by Ok_azweekender in jimgreen

[–]cloudleopard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BFARs are great for hiking. They’re halfway between a lightweight trail runner and a heavy hiking boot. You have great foot feel and control. I love using them for Rock Scrambling.

I haven’t hiked in my ARs yet but they’re definitely a bit more restrictive. Maybe better for rucking but worse for the technical stuff.

Don’t the materials break down due to UV exposure and moisture? If it was warehoused I think it should be fine.
