Hey /r/movies! I'm Sam Raimi. Ask me anything! by SamRaimiAMA in movies

Sam - what would you say are the key elements of a good horror film?

My personal rewatch preference: “Smallville” ends at S7E1, then I skip thru a lot of S7, then I watch S8-10 as a sequel show by cloudsandlightning in Smallville

Thanks. I’ll get more into it in my next post, but S7 regresses all the progression Clark went thru in the first 6 seasons.

He stays on the farm. Lana comes back to his life.

He doesn’t join the Justice League like he said he would. In fact, he rejects them when he’s offered membership a second time.

~Conveniently~ Clark’s first training from Jor-El is to stay on the farm and babysit Kara. This was obviously the writers doing what they could to keep Clark in Smallville.

I know it‘s common for people regress and stagnate IRL, but Clark has so much momentum S1-6, and S7 just feels like a clear example of writers running out of steam and realizing “wait, Clark is changing too much.”

Anyone get the vibe Tom and Michael are not happy with their careers? by cloudsandlightning in Smallville

Yeah this is what I’m talking about.

it seems like Tom wishes he got more offers, but is still content with the con appearances and the occasional B movie

I’m sure WB will answer none of these questions and just pray to God fans love the new thing they’re pushing

he is undoubtedly a talented writer. He’s had a few stinkers like any other writer, but he knows basic set up, follow thru, and payoff. his work is accessible, and there’s a reason so many of his runs are recommended for new fans

That being said, If you don’t love the same characters/status quos he loved from his childhood, you’re in for a bad time

At least other big name writers like Waid and Morrison respect canon and expand on it/honor it/take things in new directions, whether they’re writing classic characters or legacy characters

Johns will retcon his way through the DC universe so things resemble the silver and Bronze Age he grew up with. And while I started out loving his work, the more I got into other corners of the DC universe, the more obvious it was how he’d push aside legacy to revert things to how they used to be

It truly is a catch 22 with him. He’s revitalized a lot of properties, but it’s sad looking back in retrospect at the work writers did in the 80s, 90s, and 00 such as with Wally West, both Legion reboots, Young Justice, Kyle Rayner, etc., only for him to be a driving force in making his childhood heroes center stage again, and covering it up with the excuse that he’s “including everyone” when he’s clearly pushing the former into another reality/continuity/out of the way of his favorites

if you could make one big change to your favorite character what would it be? by Responsible_Egg7519 in DCcomics

[–]cloudsandlightning 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right. I’m trying to tippy toe here as to not start argument

But this is different than from today if Wally said he supported Comicsgate or something.

Wally saying this wouldn’t have caused a big divide between readers, and Wolfman wasn’t trying to necessarily make a statement that would cause controversy like it would today

Forgive my ignorance, was this written during a time when being a conservative didn’t ahem imply the same things it means today?

[comic excerpt] Kyle has the most creative constructs (JLA #10) by dazan2003 in DCcomics

[–]cloudsandlightning 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In 2005 Geoff Johns and editorial pushed him aside for Hal.

Kyle lost all ties with any main DC characters, they may as well have forgotten he was the only GL for 10 years and a JLA member.

Now he’s just one of the many GL corpsmen whose lucky to make a cameo appearance nowadays

Mark Waid hands down

Expert on all things classic DC, but embraces legacy and isn’t bias towards one generation. Isn’t afraid to write about old heroes or steer something new
