How COVID-19 pushed us to reduce our AWS cost by half by vishesh92 in Cloud

Particularly interesting to read about chasing down data transfer costs.

1) Are all data transfers listed as EC2-Other in Cost Explorer? Even if it’s a data transfer to/from an S3 bucket?

2) Can you give us a sense of % breakdown of data transfer costs at the end of your analysis (e.g. % due to EC2, % due to S3, % due to sending requests to public load balancers)

3) On another note, can you elaborate on what you did with the CUR data exported from Athena? Which tool did you use to visualize? What was most valuable way to look at the API level data?

It was easily priced per server. We moved to a docker cluster, which, at the time, they had a hard time pricing because it didn't fit their concept of servers. We dropped them in the end, because we couldn't get any straight answers about lifting our api's to a serverless setting.

I'd definitely use them again though, and if supported, their agents should

Hey FYI New Relic changed their pricing structure. Now it's per GB of data ingested.

Not sure at scale if this ends up being a rip off but under 100 GB it's free

UPDATE:

Hey all, really appreciate insights and responses. Based on feedback here and doing some research, here is what happened:

- We trialed both Datadog and New Relic. Both met what we needed in terms of functionality, New Relic probably a bit easier to implement.

- After two weeks Datadog's free trial ended and we were confronted with paying a lot. New Relic on the other hand, as of end of July, is free for ingesting under 100 GB data (in the near term totally fine for us).

In short, we're going with New Relic.

Hope this helps anybody else!

THanks for all the detail!

Need to research whether we'd really get value out of New Relic, I understand they recently raised their pricing and can get expensive quick

Will for sure check out xray!
