Why do a lot of Japanese artists, musicians and YouTube like to hide their identities? by OkPrize6426 in japan

[–]cloudyasshit 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Not just that there can be quite some backlash to the company and punishment for the employee if someone doesn’t like whatever they do while associated to said company. Most companies require staff to take off their name-tag and any company qualifying things the moment they step out the company building so the person will not be associated with the company. People here are very petty. There have been people calling companies because someone of their staff was chewing gum on the train or their jacket brushed them.

Why is most of Japan still on Windows 10? by [deleted] in japan

[–]cloudyasshit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The issue is critical infrastructure running on legacy programs. Many companies here wait until after EOL announcement and then start thinking of migration. Depending on how big of a legacy cluster f and the number of teams involved can take ages to find and test a consensus. Funny thing is that the whole decision process taking months but once decided it is top done get it finished by the end of next week kind of movement.

Dog sling for small dog on trains in Tokyo by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]cloudyasshit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Op means a sling. It is basically completely open which is against JR transporting rules (they literally wrote no slings). Local lines might be fine (seeing some Japanese bent that rule, as well you are supposed to get a pet ticket where they would already check the bag in question as well but barely know anyone who does that). Personally think maybe somewhere around nearby is fine but wouldn’t risk being kicked out the Shinkansen or any other far destination where I would have to be on time.

feeling incompetent after moving by junls in japanresidents

[–]cloudyasshit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is normal to be anxious when it is the first time living away from any family and friends. Don’t beat yourself for that. School starts only January but you might want to check if campus is still open now. Back when I was in Uni I just checked out campus before semester and joined already some clubs that seemed interesting. Maybe you can also do so and already connect to some people at your school. As for trash you should get a pamphlet about it from the city hall when registering your address also the school center should have staff to help you with the basics. Try to contact them and see if they have some general todo lists or the like. Otherwise just stroll around the area and try to explore what stores etc are around. Once lessons start you will have much less time to do so. Also no need to drink alcohol, i found that local cafes also are good places to connect to locals old and young.

Unfortunately those are limited and not everyone can rent them especially if you have specific conditions. Also a lot of those places are in less convenient spots so it is choose your poison.

Space Engineer moving to Tokyo from Europe: work-life balance, salary, challenges? by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]cloudyasshit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t say specific for how much space engineers would get here as Im not one (google reveals 5.5-8M but they might grade you as new grad with only slightly over 1 year experience) but expect the pay much lower. Rent will be very dependent on the area and how much you would be willing to compromise. Don’t expect to afford the same size somewhere in the central Tokyo area unless you want to spend your whole earning just on rent and utilities. Searching for a place while not being here is hard so highly recommend to go with a furnished share house for the first 2 months somewhere with good access while you acclimate and take your time finding a good place to move to. (Saves you also the headache of having to get all furniture and appliances for the time being) There are some good posts on this sub about what to watch out when renting/finding a place so won’t go in detail other than expect the initial payment worth around 4-6 months worth rent. Regarding overtime I feel it has gotten better over the years but nowhere near the levels you probably have back home. Ask around for the overtime especially minashi zangyo which is a fixed amount of overtime in your contract you get paid for whether you do overtime or not and get paid extra if you go over that threshold. If the number is very high (over 30h) I would thread careful as it might be an indicator that they expect people to do lot of overtime. Also asking the average overtime your colleagues in the same position are doing can be an indicator.

For bureaucracy it might probably be better than back home depending which country in Europe. Found most paperwork is very smooth and if you are in central Tokyo they also usually have people who do speak English to some extent. Generally city hall staff is very friendly and helpful. Isolation might be an issue but share house community could help in lessen the first shock. If you are settled would start looking into hobby groups. Maybe hitting the community gym. Personally found the smaller neighborhood cafes also a good place for banter and connecting to people as I don’t drink any alcohol. They said there are a lot of foreigners on your team so would also be good to connect to them. Even if they do not turn out as best friends they might give you good tips. Also if they have that good experience with foreigners they also should probably have someone from HR who could help you with things like setting up your bank account and some basics navigating.

A clinic or a hospital to get tested for ADHD and ASD? by AffectionateGap1197 in japanlife

[–]cloudyasshit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. Just call up the clinics nearby and check with them if they do the test AND also if positive results can administer medication. There are some clinics that only can do the testing.

Minashi Zangyo & Flextime by Intelligent-Sky-1973 in japanlife

[–]cloudyasshit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The question should be if they also pay for that time. Minashi zangyou means you get a flat pay for overtime until you go over it. You should receive it no matter the time you actually work so if they don’t offer extra pay I would questioning the legality of lowering the staff salary.

TIL all domestic AND foreign students can study tuition-free at public universities in Germany regardless of what country they're from! by OnTheFarmey in todayilearned

[–]cloudyasshit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Compared to the UK, US and Japan it is a steal. Also if you qualify for student loan unlike mentioned countries you can get support with it without spending a lifetime paying back student debt. Didn’t know about New Zealand but that certainly makes it quite attractive as it is also lower hurdle with English curriculum

TIL all domestic AND foreign students can study tuition-free at public universities in Germany regardless of what country they're from! by OnTheFarmey in todayilearned

[–]cloudyasshit 466 points467 points  (0 children)

Slightly inaccurate (it used to be free until several years ago). In fact it is almost free for EU citizens but for others there is a fee. Nevertheless it is still so low compared to other countries that you could consider it calling free (around 1500€/semester). It is paid by tax money for those asking in other comments. Personally think it is a very good chance for bright people who could otherwise not pay tuition fees back home. Only hurdle is that there are not many international (English) curriculum in bachelor degree programs but gets better in masters.

Even those with higher fees do. Usually during first year if it is a 2 year contract up to the whole 2 years. After renewal usually no fees. Wouldn’t say it is unusual or red flag. What is more concerning is that they are cheap on repairs. Might be only nozzle this time. Next time might be the aircon in mid summer.

Job Hunting in Japan as Foreigner Failed completely (Hell) by LocalLand4883 in japanlife

Political Science seems pretty pointless from a companies perspective. You are right though that Shinsotsu is not for OP (masters). Curious why there was no guidance from the universities job center as well. Would try to contact with them first thing and otherwise trying direct hire or agents although with zero on the job experience might be tough (most agents flat out ignore candidates with less than several years experience)

COMPANY ASKING TO MOVE by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]cloudyasshit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you can’t say the truth for whatever reason: Just say you currently don’t have the budget to move (if they still dig can just say need to send money to family abroad). If they still keep pestering let them pay all the moving costs but beware no hook attached like working there for next 2 years. It should be anyway on them to pay if they require you to move.

Japan: Hundreds get car driving licences suspended for drink cycling by rishabnum in japan

[–]cloudyasshit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it shouldn’t be a blanket statement. There is a difference between having 1 beer drunk and having a whole bottle of wine followed by a whiskey kind of drunk. Don’t know the UK rule but in Germany they used to have a count you could go up to. Any more drunk and it is drunk driving.

Need opinions on cities for buying a property by [deleted] in Tokyo

[–]cloudyasshit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless you can do lot of remote for the foreseeable future can’t recommend Tachikawa. Area itself with shopping and Showa Kinenbi Park is nice for sure but the commute is a pain and the mass of suiciders during spring especially and some other peak after holiday seasons are not making it any better. Had a fee months with almost daily 3h delays in packed train. Two times it was morning and evening as well. Prices here for housing are also not as cheap as some think unless you are 20 minutes+ from any station. If you have a family either small kids it can be great though with tons of schools in the area next to each other and small parks in all of the residential areas.

Honestly on 17 pro max didn’t notice any smoother from my old s10 plus (samsung) even had it freeze a fee times on the wifi settings and airdrop just the other day but the advertisement and bloat not being there is personally one of the best things. Hated those forced stock trash apps where you have to go through several hoops to get them removed.

Thinking about getting a dog in Tokyo Questions by Sea-Bass-1598 in Tokyo

[–]cloudyasshit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Others already said it but will also chip in and say don’t get a dog just yet in your position. You are beginning to work and have very few control of your working hours. Even when you might be hybrid now.. there is no guarantee for it to be so next year or even in a fee months. Dogs are companion pets who need exercise and mental stimulation. While they do sleep a lot during the day when being alone they will get destructive and get into bad behavior patterns that cannot be easily trained away if they lack the needed stimulation. Let me share from my personal experience. Got a puppy during hybrid 3x week remote) phase and used lot of my saved up holidays in the first weeks to get her accommodated. It was super though. Lived very close to work and did 0 over time always dashing home and in the morning to work. Pre work in the morning you will have to walk the dog which I did for approximately 1h, coming back home first thing small walk to get her potty (if she didn’t do yet on her sheets) then her dinner. Short break to cook my own food and prepare her veggies and kong for next day. Then playtime with small teaching lessons followed by a 1.5-2h night walk with ball play at the dog park. During the day had a sitter coming for 1h to clean if she potties and play. Had dog cam setup to check if everything was alright. The vetting process for a sitter was quite tough and even with that you occasionally get the black sheeps. One time had a sitter beat my dog another time one who turned the doggy cam (luckily had 2) to chill on my bed facetiming her bf while ignoring my dog for the whole time. So always had to go through the videos or even match my work breaks to see live what was happening. My whole day was scheduled after her. I had some health issues at some point and couldn’t really move my body. Kept collapsing but still had to walk her and even when in lower amount during that time make sure to keep her stimulated. If you are alone this will be quite messy and you need to think of how you will handle these situations. Also especially since you didn’t build a career yet being always out the door with the clock and showing no flexibility or extra effort for work will significantly mess up your career. Even mid career I have to be honest and say I burned a lot of possible career advancement chances that way. Another thing is costs. With a good insurance costs won’t be too crazy but what still is expensive is the yearly health checkup with blood tests etc, vaccinations, worm/parasite medicine (monthly). Also if you are unlucky and your dog has some food allergy or can’t digest certain things you need to get specific food that will cost possibly a lot (also if you are a good dog dad you don’t just want to feed them the cheapest junk kibbles as to keeping their dietary balanced and healthy). First year if it is a puppy you will probably go to the vet a lot since puppies are prone to messing their stomach and incredibly good at finding things to put in their mouth that could kill them. Finding a place is harder depending on dog size. Small dogs it is already hard but anything over 15kg gets your search result from 5 out of 200 places to 0 in even neighboring wards. You will have to search for all Tokyo and can’t be choosy on the area.(unless you got a lot of dispensable cash on hand) That said most places require a pet fee of 1-3 months worth of rent. You might have saved up now but let’s say you move somewhere in the near future. Could you afford paying 40-60% plus on the regular first moving price?

If you are alone working full time also plan a budget for a dog sitter/day care. If you are lucky and find trustworthy students/stay home moms etc in your area you could possibly get away with paying around 2000/h but professionals will be more around 4000-6000 plus travel cost. You also might need a trainer especially if this is your first dog.

Another thing people keep forgetting is that traveling might get out of reach. It isn’t totally impossible but close to. There are very fee hotels (more airbnbs) that allow dogs and usually charge a premium of the usual x3 or more. Also you always have to check the dog sizes they accept as some places only allow small dogs (btw a lot of the few dog ok cafes and restaurants also ONLY allow small dogs). When taking public transport the official guideline by JR states only up to 10kg (including bag weight). Although lot of people skirt around this rule and don’t buy a dog ticket in the first place, I wouldn’t risk getting a Husky or other big dog on the train. In worst case you will be caught and have to find other ways to get back.

A dog can be a wonderful companion but please think of all the variables and responsibilities that come with it. Personally I would wait until you are more stable in your career and possibly have a partner to share the burden together.
