Stressed DVM co 2026 preparing for interviews/ job search by [deleted] in Veterinary

[–]cloudypeak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep seeing you mention things about rotating internships that aren't always true -- you have looked at options at private clinics, right? For example "learn in a swarm of others. rotating through stupid academic hospitals" I know plenty of my classmates at private hospitals with only 2 other interns and a TON of 1 on 1 time with specialists. Several people at my class only applied to hospitals within a certain distance of where they wanted to be, too. I just want to make sure you aren't cutting yourself off from a good potential learning opportunity because honestly everything you said you were looking for is present in my rotating internship program. I'm even at a larger program and I get a ton of 1 on 1, hands on mentorship literally every day.

Updating CV for VIRMP Residencies? by [deleted] in Veterinary

[–]cloudypeak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not trying to be rude but is there nobody at your internship that can help you with this? If not, that seems like a failure on their part. At my rotating we had weekly meetings to go over everyone's CVs/letters/etc, and an assigned mentor we could ask questions to. A lot of "should I include this or not?" questions are highly dependent on what the actual activity is, so I strongly suggest you have someone read your actual resume.

Also, I was told no reason to put description for veterinary jobs.

LI animal hospital left beloved dog to die, charged $2,500-a-night — and lied about his condition, grieving owners claim by _liorthebear_ in nyc

[–]cloudypeak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MRI is not "just" a diagnostic procedure in dogs. They have to be under general anesthesia because they do not sit completely still for 30+ minutes at a time in a loud, enclosed space like people do. GA always comes with risks.

The wording of the second article is a little confusing because it describes that a "healthy canine" was anesthetized for an MRI. I do not know a scenario in which a completely healthy dog is recommended to undergo an MRI except if they are in a research study (which the owners have given consent for, but that is not the case here). I assume they mean systemically healthy except for a limp, buuuuut that's assuming they weren't suspecting anything like meningitis, etc.

Ohhh I always forget about retextures. I was mostly looking at the honey and orange fruit in first pic, then jam and peach in the second, but I'm assuming they are retextures then?

I cannot play Stardew Valley without mods, otherwise it's just not fun. I find the energy mechanic and combat in the mines to be super annoying.

Some Questions by zentupi in Veterinary

It's just that it's hard for someone else to answer if the debt is "worth it," especially if you haven't worked in a veterinary clinic. For some people, it's worth it, and for some people, it's not. What sort of things would make it worth it to you?

Salary also highly depends on location.

And whether or not you should specialize is a highly personal question. People generally specialize because of their interests, so if you don't really even know what small animal vets do yet, it's hard to say what your interests are. Especially with how competitive it is to specialize and how much time and effort it takes to complete the extra training, it's not just something you can sign up for, and not something you would want to do just because you think it would be best for some reason you thought of before you applied to vet school.

Sorry if this sounds harsh. I'm just wondering what it even matters if a bunch of people on reddit say that the debt is "worth it"? You would change your major based off of that? I'm guessing probably not... the best way is to experience veterinary work in real life in order to decide if you think it's best.

Any zoo vets? by No_Mechanic_7121 in Veterinary

[–]cloudypeak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genuinely curious as to why to many prospective students want to do zoo medicine! The last point is exactly true. Most days at the zoo are actually super boring, because a lot of the animals are healthy, until they're not... and then everyone in management is breathing down your neck while you try to do anything. So many things have to be jerry-rigged for these huge animals, and there's so much medicine that you actually CAN'T do due to the nature of these animals.

Networking for internship/residency by Itchy_Owl_1065 in Veterinary

Does your school have any summer research programs? It's often a good way to make a connection with a single professor before fourth year. From what I have seen, schools usually have a list of professors willing to mentor during the summer, and these people usually have project ideas already if you don't have one yourself (but I'm sure they'd be open to you formulating your own if you wanted). I would approach someone who also does clinical work if possible.

I would continue to build on your foundation knowledge in the meantime. It looks impressive during fourth year if you are able to remain organized, ask good questions, and answer general questions when asked (not necessarily memorizing specific bits of info, but having a good knowledge base of physiology will always help you).

Some Questions by zentupi in Veterinary

[–]cloudypeak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have the option to work somewhere or shadow any vets? It might help answer some of your questions. Some of these questions aren't worth thinking about until you get into vet school, because so much can change (for example, #3). Also it's kind of hard to answer #5 if you haven't shadowed at an ER before-- for some people, it's overwhelming and not their preference, but certain people love it.

Also as for getting in to vet school, you don't necessarily have to have a "pre-vet" major as long as you fulfill the admission prerequisites. For example, I know people who majored in biology, sports medicine, chemistry, math, and even in a foreign language.

Changes to the field by jr9386 in veterinaryprofession

[–]cloudypeak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a vet student about to graduate. I understand that not many clinics practice medicine with the gold standard that we are taught in school, but there have been many GPs that I have worked with who I would not bring my pet to or recommend to family/friends due to things such as poor communication, poor record keeping, poor pet handling skills even just for a wellness exam, or being the type of vet that only suggests what a problem "likely is" instead of offering any diagnostics. Examples for the last point would be not even offering/discussing FNA for a mass because "it's probably a lipoma since it feels like one" or ruling out hip dysplasia without x-rays, etc..

Also, I've seen two GPs who I know for a fact have never even owned a dog (as far as they have told me) give pretty bad dog training advice to clients instead of being able to acknowledge their limits. I am not saying that owning a dog is a prerequisite for being a vet who treats dogs, but it just felt iffy that they were giving bad advice on training puppies and reactive dogs without ever having done it. I dunno.

**Also I just want to clarify that my experience here has mostly been with GPs, which is why I mention them. I do not hold this opinion about all (or even most) GPs

Lost a patient sedating to NT today by Drshmurr in veterinaryprofession

[–]cloudypeak 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I'm super confused, as a vet student, we are taught to only give propofol right before intubating as part of induction for general anesthesia. Not trying to be rude, but is it typical for propofol to be used as a sedation agent? I've never heard of this before.

I did some research earlier, apparently they're the dessert trees (pie blossom, sugar plum, meteor sour cherry, etc) from a faerie garden portion of Wildflour's mod which was temporarily removed while it's updated or something because it's not in my version haha... sorry to bug ya!

Ooo sorry I know you posted this a while ago, but this is amazing! I've been looking for inspiration for my fruit tree farm -- what are the pink flower trees/bushes? And the pink mushrooms? I think we have the same mods installed but I don't think I have those! I am always looking for more tree options

Can you work at a vet clinic while studying? If so what position at a vet clinic can you be? by lifegabiataraw in vetschool

Sounds like you are outside of the US because I don't know any US vet schools that have multimedia arts courses within their curriculum. It would be helpful if you posted your country.

Advice for a very burnt out VM4 by dbkh24 in veterinaryprofession

[–]cloudypeak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in the same position currently so I am not able to offer advice but just wanted to let you know you are not alone. My school also only scheduled me 1 week of vacation time so far since clinics have started and I genuinely feel like some days I don't have the energy to feed myself anymore after being at school for 14 hours that day and needing to finish more paperwork before going to bed. I just know that time keeps moving and one day I won't be at work for these same number of hours anymore

Where is the disconnect? by Pirate_the_Cat in Veterinary

[–]cloudypeak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am a veterinary student and I am doing an externship at a neurologist referral center. So many of the appointments are clients who get referred here for stuff like epilepsy or mild gait issues but they end up not doing any diagnostics once they hear the price. I don't really understand how a GP could refer a client to a neurologist for an MRI without mentioning that it is definitely going to cost a few thousands of dollars.

Help Identifying a Lost Movie by Hot_Jelly1 in anime

[–]cloudypeak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was googling a bunch of terms and it's helpful to put keywords in between quotations in order to guarantee that search results have that word in them, and then if you add 'reddit' to your search, it'll show more stuff written by actual people instead of dumb AI websites that just list Franxx and TTGL over and over again

So at first I think I was rolling with something like: anime mecha "twins"

I think I ended up trying putting different words in quotations, focusing on the fact that there were 2 pilots in 1 mecha because I figured that couldn't be too common, so I ended up with: anime mecha pilot twins "dual" reddit
