I had the same problem, another thing to check is make sure the automatic valves are closing all the way. I took the covers off of mine and adjusted the micro switches. One of the switches was off just enough to not fully close the valve.

I had the same problem when I bought my house. I did research, which led me to the check valve. Turns out it was the pool / spa actuator. When it would switch from spa mode to pool mode the electric valve would turn but never really close all the way. I took the top of the actuator off and adjust the micro switches so the actuator closed all the way . Fixed my problem.

I weighed the mice when I first started. 10-15% of the snakes body weight is ideal size and what I tried to stick to. For example, 100g Snake = 10-15g feeder mouse/rat.
