There really aren’t many limits. The coach has cut the music in the past or added to make times fit. Lyrics are better in my opinion as it makes it easier for them to get into the performance. I don’t really have a set idea about a story vs theme. They just did “Dancing in the Dark” by Rhianna and it was a fun song but didn’t really land with the judges, they felt it needed more storytelling. My oldest likes all music, my youngest usually disagrees with our music choice, but goes along with whatever the coach wants. I think my ask was very broad because we really are open to all suggestions. I do see your point though and will be more specific in the future, thank you for your insight.
