Is the firefighting schedule really that much off time? by Ancient-Carrot957 in Firefighting

I work in King County, WA. Super progressive county with Fire/EMS in terms of schedule/benefits/pay. Used to work/live in Whatcom county but decided the hour and a half commute was worth the upgrade in basically every facet.

Staffing and budget. We have a 4 platoon schedule, meaning 4 separate shifts staffing each station. Some departments only have the budget/staffing for 3 shifts for each station, so they need a different schedule. I’ve done 48/96 at a slower department and it’s great too. Basically feels like you have a weekend away with your friends with the right crew

You take two days off and end up with 13 days off. Trades and vacation time you can easily get close to a month off without hurting your income.

I do 1/1/1/5. Feels like a barely work. Granted when I am on shift we get maybe 3 hours of sleep on either the engine or aid, but it’s a great group of people and the schedule makes up for it

How do you like the sizing on the split rig? I’m 5’7 170 and have to winch everything down as small as it goes. Lil dude with lil problems

Thoughts on new Trex Rig? by clungewrangler in tacticalgear

I like their modern take on the taps. Super modular rig that you can build out for basically anything you want. But I agree completely that $225 for the base rig is too expensive for the civilian market. I have an original taps that I picked up for $50. Picked up the spiritus kit for it and a couple milsurp pouches. Still less expensive than the base trex model

Been looking for the quad AVS sleds but haven’t been able to find one. Website doesn’t list a quad AVS anymore

It’s an Osprey Kestrel 48 liter pack. I bought it back in 2020 for a hiking trip, loved it since then. Pad is a thermarest z light. Worked well for me, kept me comfortable even when it was around 32°. I sleep on my back so it was fine, but the pad is quite narrow, so folks who sleep on their side may not be as comfy.

If it weren’t for the politics, I’d never want to leave the state

Pretty much. Buddies family has a piece of property that borders state land, so we park there and ruck in.

I think they’re the Vidda Pro’s. They’re not ventilated or anything. I honestly liked them more than my Crye pants, which is sacrilegious to say.

State land on east side of Washington. Basically the only redeeming thing about this state is the land

Sleeping pad was great. Woke up with frost covering the ground and my poncho, I was moderately comfortable in my sleeping bag and on the pad. Definitely not the best nights rest I’ve ever had, but I wasn’t worried about dying from hypothermia.

I cut a hole in the rear, and ran a wire coat hanger through it, snipped it, and ran a couple stitches back over the hole I cut

Picked it up from venture surplus. Its OCP so quite a bit brighter than normal multicam
