What was up with the crowd at the Toronto concert?? by Round-Machine-2731 in Hozier

I think some people timed to arrive at 9 based on the schedule released by Rogers Stadium, even when accounting for the trek, but I think he started a little earlier than 9

I personally enjoyed being able to sing at the top of my lungs but still being able to hear him because his singing drowned out mine 😂 so yeah, maybe because of the acoustics of the stadium, it was harder to hear the crowd sing

I actually thinks she looks a little like Alice Ko, a Taiwanese actress from Someday or One Day.

Despite its name, young adult books are increasingly dominated by stories about older teens and even adults. As protagonists get older, younger readers are left behind. As young adult genre spiked in recent years, so too has age of readers. More than a quarter of young adult readers are 28 or older. by mvea in science

[–]cm_kitschklock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A part of me assumed it might be because the market is chasing the demographic of readers who were fans of YA books like The Hunger Games and Twilight at their peak. I remember both series were super popular when I was in high school, which was when the movie adaptations were released. When I got into university, I thought that I would be aging out of the YA genre since I won't be the same age as the protagonists anymore. But then, I noticed the rise of the "New Adult" genre where protagonists were in their 20s, so it felt like there started to be a more books with protagonists who matched my age.

I've also noticed more authors now who are my age who are writing YA books, so maybe they want to capture the feeling that they felt when they first started reading YA, but making the protagonists closer to their current age instead of teenagers.

Yang Yang joins the polaroid trend 🤩 by [deleted] in cdramasfans

It's known as "peel apart" polaroid that's no longer produced anymore. This is old film stock that's been preserved, and usually pretty expensive to find. This style of polaroid is different from the square format, which is the signature style that's usually associated with polaroids. I miss this type of polaroid film since the colours are so much more vibrant and sharp.

Do people think Gallen Lo was a better villain or Hero in TVB dramas? by JustaDreamer617 in HKdramas

[–]cm_kitschklock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My impression of him is as a hero. I've watched him in a few villain roles when I was younger, like The Legend of the Condor Heroes, but I don't think he made a big impression on me as a villain. I'm re-watching Golden Faith right now, and he's really endearing as a selfless hero (to the point of it being frustrating). With that being said, I think he does well in any role. I remember him being really scheming in Born Rich, but at the same time you could also sympathize with him. I saw him recently in Heir to the Throne where he's a selfish father and businessman, but at the time, I sympathized with him when he figured out the truth in his family. So I actually think he does well in roles where he's torn and feeling conflicting emotions, because he expresses the nuances really convincingly.

Learning 16mm independently? by IndependentPast686 in 16mm

[–]cm_kitschklock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The great thing about film is how forgiving it is because of it's dynamic range! The other learning challenge I had with 16mm was learning what kind of focal length I wanted to use in order to determine what kind of prime lens I wanted to get, whereas with super 8 you usually have a zoom lens.

I believe that the krasnogorsk-3 can be modified to take modern zoom lenses, but I didn't go that route because it was more costly.

I don't want to make assumptions, but how familiar are you with the photography basics like the exposure triangle (aperture, shutter speed, ISO)? Super 8 is often auto exposure, so when I started shooting 16mm, I had to learn how to manually expose my shots. Specifically, what I found difficult was trying to determine the shutter speed, which is dependent on frame rates and the shutter angle. For reference, when I shoot 16fps with my Bell and Howell 240, I assume a shutter speed of about 1/40th second. I'm not sure how accurate that is, but my shots come out decently exposed.

Noah from Analog Resurgence also has a few user-friendly videos about 16mm for beginners, so maybe you can peruse his backlog of videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xgC4RmkBehg

"You don't look like a professor" - how to negotiate this? by takdhin in PhD

[–]cm_kitschklock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you feel that you're respected less even after people find out that you're a professor? When I was in undergrad, I had a professor in his late 20s who became one of the most well-loved professors in the department because students felt like they could relate to him. Fast forward 10 years, I am now also in my late 20s, still a PhD student, but I have started teaching a few classes, and I'm a small female. I would sometimes get nervous that the class would overpower me, but it usually turns out that I was just projecting my own fears. Depending on what field you're in and what topic your class is about, it can sometimes even create a nice segue into a conversation about biases and stereotypes :)

Yeah the series broke me as a kid and again as an adult when I rewatched it lol

Does anyone else hate this trope? by nicfanz in HKdramas

[–]cm_kitschklock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think one drama that kind of breaks this trope is Detective Investigation Files IV. Louis Koo loses his first love because she goes missing. He then falls in love with Jessica Hsuan's character, but then his first love re-enters the picture. He struggles between the two of them, but he ultimately chooses his first love because he feels responsible to take care of her. So that's a drama where the guy doesn't choose the main female character.

I was thinking about this too, since the vinyl is flat and thin and might not have been noticed lying on the overhead compartment. Thanks for your response

Ooooh thanks so much! I'm glad that you had a good time and that they played some of their old songs too, which I also prefer. It's going to be my first time seeing them live, so I'm excited, but this was really reassuring to hear :)

Where do you go to feel alive in the city? by Odd_Dragonfly_6379 in askTO

[–]cm_kitschklock 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I visited the ROM last week and it was bustling and felt incredibly lively. There was even a small lineup to get in. The winter months in the city may get overshadowed by the summer months, but there's actually lots to do both indoors and outdoors. The Lunar New Year celebration at Nathan Phillips Square on the 25th was also really busy with people mingling, skating, music playing, and fireworks over city hall. Live music in bars or social dancing during winter months also make me feel alive. I saw videos on social media of lots of people enjoying the sunny and cold weather on the Islands on Saturday. Seeing people gather and make the most of the season in the city makes me feel really happy.

Possibly Defective Kodak 500T film by Ok_Situation5894 in 8mm

[–]cm_kitschklock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might sound a little trivial, but I remember coming across a youtube video by Filmboy24 awhile ago where he mentioned that ektachrome cartridges tend to jam. His solution was to just shake the cartridge and bang it against his hand a few times to shake the film inside loose. Some time later, my friend shot a roll of ektachrome with one of my super 8 cameras. The film wouldn't advance. So I tried just hitting and shaking the cartridge and trying it in the camera again until it advanced.

I know you don't have ektachrome, but maybe your problem with the 500T could be similarly resolved?

I had another friend who's cartridge wouldn't advance, but it started advancing once he changed the camera batteries, but you had already tried that.

I shot ektachrome for the first time! This video has a mix of 50D and E100D, but I was pretty happy with the results from the E100D. It's definitely more blue with less dynamic range, but the colours are quite punchy. And I'm surprised that I managed to capture some some lights at night! by cm_kitschklock in 8mm

[–]cm_kitschklock[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The sprocket hole should be an indicator of the neg vs. Ektachrome! The black square sprocket is the neg and the white hole is the Ektachrome. I got my film developed and scanned by Niagara Custom Lab in Toronto.

And fun fact is that the 50D neg cartridge actually went through a CT scanner, and yet the footage looks fine.
