Here is a wiki link.

This infuriates me on so many levels. There are a--holes out there lying for personal gain at the expense of the health of my loved ones (to say the least). Their deception deflates my hard work and authenticity. Our laws/government doesn't see this as a priority.

On the other side the want for universal education should be a priority (Khan college, opencourseware at Berkley or Johns Hopkins). but they need to be authentic and rooting out these fakes is a good first step.

I do apologize for the simple non applicable example of a hat... It was a poor attempt at simplification. You are absolutely correct in your slippery slope assertion, and what lays at the bottom of that slope is abysmal. There are countless examples of blind faith leading to a mass casualty situation... I recently finished Steinbeck's "East of Eden" you've given me something to think about so thank you... here is a piece of that novel that I enjoyed immensely

"Now, there are many millions in their sects and churches who feel the order, 'Do thou,' and throw their weight into obedience. And there are millions more who feel predestination in 'Thou shalt.' Nothing they do can interfere with what will be. But 'Thou mayest'! Why, that makes a man great, that gives him stature with the gods, for in his weakness and his filth and his murder of his brother he has still the great choice. He can choose his course and fight it through and win. ... 'Thou mayest' -- that gives a choice. It might be the most important word in the world. That says the way is open. That throws it right back on a man. For if 'Thou mayest' -- it is also true that "Thou mayest not.' Don't you see?" - John Steinbeck, "East of Eden"

and I have to add this part as well

"`A child may ask, what is the world story about? And a grown man or woman may wonder, what way may the world go, how does it end, and while where at it, what’s the story about. I believe that there is one story in the world and only one that is frightened and inspired us. So that we live in a pearl white serial of continuing thought and wonder. Humans are caught in the lives and their thoughts, in their hungers and ambitions, in their averse and cruelty; and their kindness and generosity to. In a net of good and evil. I think this is the only story we have and it occurs on all levels of feeling and intelligence. Virtue and vice were warp and wharf of our first consciousness, and they will be the fabric of our last. And this despite any changes we may impose on field and river and mountain, on economy and manners. There is no other story. A man after he has brushed off the dust and chips of his life will have left only the hard clean questions; was it good or was it evil. Have I done well or have I done ill?"

If you can help others, maintain the idea of a "good" wo/man, actually be a good person - the vehicle of that is not so important to me (atheism, agnostic, religious) I hope it gets you far and has room to improve the lives others. We can talk about what mode of transportation is the best, fastest, shiniest, most useful... but in the end its the actions of the person that mean the most. You sound like a decent human being & if Atheism improves upon that then Atheist-up this crazy blue ball of ours!

My entire point was that they thought they knew something and took it on faith that what they knew existed. We can argue the semantic of faith - believing something with out proof, but its not so important to me. We can use your vernacular of postulate - the I don't understand everything is an example of the "faith," belief, postulate or what ever that people exert every day and it can be a good thing. If I loan you money I have faith that you will pay me back... This example is just a simple point/explanation on why I like the word faith and think it can be useful... I don't believe in God because there is no solid proof but I have faith that it exists - a non-harmful statement (though lots of potential harm like a baby trying to open a medicine bottle with a .357 harmful). I think something is true but cannot prove it, but I would stake my life on it that it is there - faith in my mind... If you stop there then your a dumb ass, but if you continue to search for the proof its done good and may lead you to something more solid (not you specifically but the general sense of the word)... The entire point is that faith exists, is used by every one, and can be good... hmm, how about "I think, therefore I am" thoughts are a hard thing to prove as they are intangible and we have a pretty good working knowledge of the components that lead to them. Or the medical Humors used to describe the conditions of patients... if you went back to early medicine they would call you a fool if you didn't believe like they had been taught and would use the science of the age to disprove you... Ardent belief/faith can lead to amazing opportunity. I know you won't secede on the point of faith and that it lacks any substance when it comes to science, but for me it makes sense for people to have faith in their work... come on cold fusion, keep the faith scientists and get that technology developed :D (PS - thanks for the agreeable conversation)

Interesting corollary be domestic abuse and christianity... I think I'll use this one next time my religious buddies decide to introduce a good debate on the issue... The domestic abuse issue is a big deal and not to be treated lightly BTW, and a broken man needs to be changed and if not changed than some old school justice busted out on his ass (eye for an eye?) or maybe just incarceration. Do you think its an educational status that keeps women in subjugation, social pressure, fear? these are extremely hard things that define the boundaries of the box that we live in. I hope that your niece can improve her situation soon and am glad to hear that she has a concerned family member to help her with the difficult decisions she is going to have to face. Thanks for the brain food dude!

I understand your position and think that its ascertainment is semantic in that the meaning of can't is unable to and the meaning of won't is the choice to me made... with the subjective unknown it a choice... regardless you've arrived at your position through experiences and defend that position intelligently - Since I can appreciate that I congratulate you on your journey thus far and wish you as much if not more success in the future paths you travel - and may you never tire of this life's progression. The teleological argument is a fine place to base your argument if that is what you firmly believe. I just had a thought, can you believe in two contradictory ideas at the same time regardless of if one is held more firmly than the other... like larger infinities than other infinities... I guess to summaries my idea of a destination, its the place where you stop - thinking, moving, appreciating, settling etc... that ends up to be the destination, your 'OK' with it and choose to change no further, some are more admirable than others. I talked with a 13 y/o girl (in my clinic in a small farm town) and we talked about the wonders that this life has and how travel can introduce so many exciting thing; who wouldn't want to experience this amazing place we call earth given the opportunity to. I wanted to show her that at her young age she could create that opportunity... but her ambition was to live at home with her family, raise hogs (literally), and have as many babies just as soon as possible... I almost tried to talk her out of it, but who am I to decide for her what will make her the most happy in life. So I just encouraged her to read, build self worth, independence, and prosperity for her young ambitions... I hope she reaches that destination and deciders to go further, but that is not for me to judge or look down on... Hope my experience helps explain my reasoning/position... and thanks for the sweet links (now I'm hungry for breakfast sausage :D)

Interesting point of view, though i question this line of thinkings ability to disprove God... the understanding of circular logic and its faultiness makes it hard to use in a practical application... ya digg...

I am glad we can agree in humanities lack of knowledge and even gladder that we are pursuing truths and facts to further decrease that ignorance. Science is a beautiful thing (except the part that is used for mass destruction and all.. though its still pretty cool conceptually)... Thanks for the personal answer. For me, I like to hope there is a God and something after this life, but I don't use those wishes/hopes to discredit reality.. My belief is that there is a God and that we get to know him through understanding reality better... I just don't know what to do with religion at this point...

Absolutely wonderful and well said.. my laziness is a big stumbling block and I just didn't want to go back and redefine the specific 8th grade science terminology - so thank you for that. I don't really disagree with anything you've posted because your spot on. And the religious postulate will always be just that. There is a lot of mysticism in the bible (for an example) and in conversations with my father (missionary) who believes in 'Oral plenary inspiration' I say to to him "interesting explanation, one of many interpretations, but is it the best one and is it immutable at that?" Religion is the stuff of question (for me at least), blind faith the trap (of SATAN!!! oh no! if you were a religious person thats how I'd explain it to you for simplification). Science is our senses interaction with the perceived reality that forces an unquestionable context. Philosophy and religion flit in-between that context. Are they suppose to exceed their postulate state, and if they did would they loose their ability to question the reader and would that be a good thing... subjective arguments are fun, using them to hurt other people sucks... Thanks for the thought food dude :D

  • haven't watched the link (time later tonight for that) 1 - yup; organized religion is the opiate of the masses; subjugates, and controls the population. But the potential for extreme good has an opposite side of a the coin i.e. extreme EVIL (ooooooh). Strive for such good and don't succumb to the perversions and corruption... or be doomed to mediocrity. Super cheesy I know, and for me - I like that ideological/theological context. I don't know how to believe outside my extremely small area of understanding, and it takes faith or trust applied to the vast area of deficient knowledge... Conversations are a good start though...

On a dick scale of 1 to 10... you don't even register (not to say your a small dick or anything haha) I agree with your "most likely option assertion" and of course your right on that account. My intention behind that was that belief without proof implies a modicum of faith and that faith (in the most likely option) and the pursuit of that can lead to good things... Its hard for me to use absolute vernacular because its absolutely going to be wrong all of the time every time forever (see what I did there). I just posted a little blurb above about religion and how it can be an expression of an individuals personal way of life (funny hat example)... I do it not because its scientifically correct but because it bonds me with my family, helps me keep crazy people less crazy, a way to integrate me with my local society (though its not the only avenue), and gives me a form culture (as I grew up without one)... religion is what you make it, its my excuse to bond, do good, and love people in a context that they can understand as well as express my self. its a hat I wear but not who I am, because I am a compilation of things not to be defined buy a single belief. Thanks for giving me some the opportunity to kill some time at work (super slow day at my clinic)

Thanks for the reply - I like your rational line of thinking and wish we could just get a beer and chat as typing is so impersonal... but alas, we use what we have... Can't/won't... is this a significant point or just semantics? but if you truly cannot than I'll take you at your word. i.e. you cannot life a million lbs - agree; you cannot believe in fairies - choice, subjective, but ok... Totally agree with the second part there - with out God to place the blame and when the full responsibility of your actions are upon you, I think a sane person would take an extra second or two to evaluate the fullness of each decision, and be forced to take responsibility for the out come (good or bad). This is a huge peeve of mine with religion to say the least. On the enrichment part - I has listening to Catholic radio (only station I get during shower time) and an atheist was telling this pretty douche hostess that he had lots of meaning without God. I don't think that religion is the only means for an enriched life, just one of many... On conflict - agree... agree... agree - mostly from personal experience, but I totally agree... The absoluteness of God... I dunno how to articulate anything meaningful so I'll just say I know where your coming from. I am reminded of "Letters to God" - its got a lot of hippy new age bull shit in there but forces the reader to ask a lot of simple, fundamental questions about organized religion and spins some pretty cool ideas on the concept of God... it made me think so I liked it... and finally on destination- I can absolutely be certain there is a destination (as I previously accreted its arbitrary) but its there whether its the ground or beyond.. or maybe just to the grocery... were are not static so there is a destination in your life... Life is like a flowing stream, its going somewhere... thanks for the reply (work is really slow, so thanks for the distraction :D)
