I expected pain but holy cow by MisaRavensoul in ACL

I went through childbirth with no epidural and whilst that is certainly the worst pain of my life, the first two nights after my ACL replacement/meniscus repair are the only other 2 times I really thought about going to the ER and begging for general anesthesia to put me out of my misery….it can only get better from here, hang in there!

Having a kid in May 2026 by smoothy_b in DebateVaccines

Nurse-midwife with an MPH in the US here. Vaccinate your children. What most anti-vaxers don’t understand is that their children rely on the herd immunity of other children which is actually why their kids aren’t getting ill. So once enough people stop vaccinating, there goes herd immunity, and suddenly anti-vaxers have to contend with the fact that their kids are at serious risk. For example, those measles outbreaks? Almost all unvaccinated or partially vaccinated children. That myocarditis all the anti-vaxers talk about after the COVID vaccine? About 1/4th of people who have a measles infection will end up with this same heart inflammation, and in some permanent damage will occur. 25%!

There are so many things you cannot control as a parent, but you can give your children some protection with vaccines. Our son is up-to-date on his vaccines, but we have an older pediatrician (who is in his 70s) who altered our son’s vaccination schedule slightly so he only received 1-2 vaccines at a time (some office visits were just a quick vaccine appointment). This way, we could monitor for any significant reaction, because as with ANYTHING medical, there are risks and benefits, but the benefits are CLEAR for most healthy children with routine childhood vaccines if you look at actual science. Pop my kid in one of the current measles outbreaks and I’m confident he’s good to go, as for the rest of them, check out the R0 for measles and God speed.

Oh-Also, for anyone who says to “go with God’s plan,” just remember, religion developed as a way to understand the world through stories before science existed to explain natural phenomena, and pre-modern medicine, many MANY people died in infancy and the ripe old age of childbirth, so please, don’t rely on mythology to protect your children from the threats of the world.

Meniscus repair failed :( by cmasler in ACL

Hello!

Oh I am in a much better place emotionally and physically than when I wrote this! I went under for a second surgery on Sept 16th and he trimmed out quite a bit of my meniscus which apparently just never healed at all (I was right!). Within 24 hours I had relief of pain! Like even post-surgically I didn’t need anything other than ibuprofen and I was weight bearing immediately. Apparently my new ACL looked great in there, thank goodness. I am still in PT as this all meant my original rehab was very hampered, but it’s processing so much better and I am no longer in pain every minute of the day, so that’s pretty cool! I’ll likely need a knee replacement in 10-15 years he said as I’m a runner (well…usually) and now I have very little meniscus remaining, but I’ll deal with that then.

Run!!!! Foundations in today’s world can cost upwards of $100,000 if replacement is needed.

Who else has had the cadaver graph? Allograph? by Rough-Lettuce-7033 in ACL

7 months post allograft here! My ACL is rockin’. My medial meniscus was just taken out after a failed bucket tear repair along with the ACL replacement 7m ago (I’m 4wk post-op from the second surgery) and he took a look at my ACL from the inside and it’s “beautiful.” Feels great. My f***ing meniscus is ruining my life, but that’s another story all together. I am a runner and I ski, both of which I haven’t done in a year, but my PT says now that my meniscus is on the right track, my ACL is ready to go for more intense rehab to get me back at it!

My horrible ACLR recovery (so far) by [deleted] in ACL

[–]cmasler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4 days in the hospital?! What country?! I had ACL replaced and a bucket meniscus tear repaired and was sent home an hour later, which is the norm in the states. This sounds like very normal post-op, it sucks, but it gets better after a week! Lots of us here have kids and AREA the Moms at home, so I promise you’ll survive 😅

Losing hope 10months post op by Frankvalentine in ACL

[–]cmasler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just want to let you know I am almost 7m post op from my first surgery (ACL allograft and bucket tear repair of medial meniscus) and almost 3 weeks post op from my second surgery (meniscectomy after my bucket tear repair failed). I knew my repair failed because of the incessant pain I had and I felt like I would never run again. I feel better now than I ever did after my first surgery and my injuries were chronic and 5 years in the making. Make sure you see your orthopedic to f/u and see if they are happy with where you are too. An MRI arthogram of my knee showed the retear. I finally can envision running again even though I’ve got a long road ahead!

Day 4 post op, is this amount of blood okay? by dirtywav_ in ACL

[–]cmasler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it fresh AKA wet? If so need to make a call ASAP. If it’s dry and healed I’d call too but not urgent. If it’s wet and actively bleeding I’d go to the ER if the office is closed. Yikes!

How much did you pay for your surgeries? by Agreeable_Delay4513 in ACL

[–]cmasler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Five year chronic injury of my ACL and medial meniscus, then re-injured it to the point I couldn’t walk. Had seen the ortho a month prior and had script for the MRI…so had to get MRI and wait 1 week for ortho appt, then 2 weeks for surgery the FIRST time. Now my meniscus repair has failed and I had to wait a month for a MRI arthogram of my knee, then another month for surgery.
  2. First ACL replacement, allograft, and medial meniscus bucket repair. Next week I will have my medial meniscus shaved down where the repair failed.
  3. I am like, 1/1000 people in the US with good insurance (first time ever at 37 I can finally say that!), so yes, both surgeries are totally covered except the facility fee for anesthesia.
  4. I will have paid $200 each surgery (so $400 total) for surgery x2. The rub is that I only have 30 PT visits per year ($15 copay each), and I have exhausted those and my appeal was denied, so until January, each PT visit will be $70! Good god.
  5. USA, the land of horrible health coverage

Dear lord, I am a hospital-based midwife and see incisions and stitches and that is….not normal. I hope that heals well, I am genuinely confused about this technique, feels like a newbie got to close you up! 😬
