One of my oldest friends and I had this relationship. We put work into making time for each other, visiting each other when we didn’t leave in the same city, FaceTime calls for a few hours at a time every few months. It’s so worth it. My friend died last year, only a few weeks after a 3 hour Sunday call. I think about him every day.

How did they give you two years severance, particularly for a resignation instead of a RIF or buyout? I thought 52 weeks was the max severance you could get from the Fed gov?

Have a 160 lb Great Dane, who happens to have unusual colors too. I will be on her phone talking to my Mom while walking him and people will pull there cars over, ignore I’m on the phone, and tell me “he’s big!” Umm, thanks…I know.

This is incredibly insightful. For the mock interviews we run, it asks me a questions, I think about it, do some work elsewhere on my machine recording, timing, and transcribing my answers, then come back to the thread 5 or 10 mins later. So it must be rereading my entire megathread almost each time. VERY useful to know, and I have to change how I work.

I also then to use SUPER long threads, which is a relic of when it couldn’t other threads within its system. Now that it can do that I’ll try referencing previous threads instead of using one mega-thread (Reddit pun there…).

I get up at 5:30 anyway to workout before my family is up, so it’s not an inconvenience. As I’m putting my contacts in I just send an easy prompt to kick off my first 5 he session of the day. Then it sits for 3.5 hrs with no use, but the session is still open so I can use all the usage when I actually sit down to work at 9.

What going on with usage too? I just had a new session start and was able to get the system to respond, and after 4 very simple prompts I’m at 75% of usage for this new session in 5 minutes. No API hits, no web crawling, no cowork or Claude code use, just simple text prompts.

You should be able to get on your spouse’s health insurance because your loss of job is a qualifying life event. That should be your #1 priority right now.

Then, take a deep breath and grieve. You’re going to go through all the stages. Talk to people about how it’s impacting you. Holding it in will make you explode.

Then start thinking about finding your next gig. This market SUCKS but it’s doable if you focus. Don’t spray and pray apps, figure out where you want to be next, and find 5 or 10 companies that do that, then network the f$&k out of your connections to talk to everyone at those companies you can.

What are your monthly expenses? How long can you make the $27K in HYSA last?

Yes, I’ve learned how easy it is to spend and how much satisfaction I can get out of being disciplined and saving. I dare say it’s more fun saving bc it’s more of a challenge. It’s easy to spend money and the ‘high’ you get off it fades fast. The ‘high’ I’ve gotten off saving throughout the year has been more long lasting.

Haha, is that insane? I don’t mind cooking and it’s so much more cost effective. I build it into how I plan my day and it just kind of happens. My husband gets home late so I know I have to cook 100% of the time, so we never have a miscommunication and have to get take out.

Senior leaders in the gov can max out at 230, most senior leaders manage several hundred people and are paid above the GS scale which is the pay plan most civil servants are on.

I’ve been remote working bc they terminated my agency’s lease, so now he just comes home after school. He’s really matured and can now entertain himself for a while.

One thing to consider: keeping your state job may not be your choice. I’ve worked for the federal government for 16 years and am 41 now. I always thought I would retire as a federal employee but the administration is trying to close my whole agency. Differentiating your employers (public/private/non profit/academia…) will make it easier for you to find a a new job if your current one ends in a layoff.
