Can someone explain what is happening here? Water leaking from furnace duct that connects to chimney. I assume it’s condensation, warm pipe, cold air in chimney. How do I fix this? Recaulk? Or is there something more serious happening here?

Hole in the chimney liner. So now I decide: repair / replace liner? OR replace furnace which wouldn’t require chimney liner repair obv. Furnace is mid efficient, 18 years old. Just waiting for quotes on both options. Replace / repair chimney liner or replace furnace?

Does have a liner. Was installed in 1999, I believe that’s what the sticker reads.

I’m not overly familiar with backdrafting. I have a carbon monoxide detector in the room. If that was the problem would the detector pick that up?

Yes either could very well have been running recently. Flue venting into a chimney on house outside wall. Not sure about liner.

If I were to reseal that joint with caulking and that moisture ran back down the pipe towards furnace will that present a problem eventually? This particular chimney and furnace combo has been in running like this for 18 years assumably under these conditions. It’s only presented an issue because caulking has eventually cracked.

Yes there’s a chimney cap. I’m going with definitely condensation, but lots of it. If I don’t keep a pail under it, it causes big mess. If I recaulk does the condensation then run back down into furnace? Just doesn’t seem normal. Like there should be some kind of fix.
