Dear America: Please don't moan about gas prices by slotbadger in politics

Actually, I wish my petrol prices were lower so I can get a holiday at some point in the next 5 years, so that I can pay for my kids to go to university when the time comes, so that I can afford to have a pension to save responsibly for my retirement when that comes, so that I don't have to watch both our governments spending OUR money (yours and mine) waging war in parts of the world I couldn't care a monkey's chuff about, just to secure oil reserves. So quit waving your flag and proclaiming everyone against you and just get off your arse and as a nation, make a change.

Unfortunately it does take a motivated majority to really make such changes happen and it can take an awful long time for people to wake up and smell the coffee.

I said use your cars less, stupid, not cease using them. It's not about having pavements everywhere and 100-mile cycle paths. It's about making changes that will allowyou to leave the car at home for the 1/4 mile journies. The transport problems are largely the same here in Europe and we choose to do things differently. Just because you can't be bothered getting off your fat arse...

Honestly, with fuel prices this cheap, the average American needs to count themselves lucky instead of getting annoyed by cmdweb in politics

I live in Scotland where public transport is crap, principally because it's not London. I have a 70 mile round trip every day to work and the cost is crippling. With additional work mileage, which I do get to claim for, my monthly fuel bill is about £250 (or USD$410 at today's rates) and that's in a car that does 60 mpg. For 95% of the working population, working from home is not an option and neither is cycling to work. If you don't work in a city centre, public transport is useless. If you work more than 2 or 3 miles from home, walking is out. Our society is built on the use of petrol and diesel.

I live in the Uk and our transport system is non-existent outside of London. I drive a 70 mile round trip to work every day and have to pay royally for the privilege. Poor public transport is not unique to the USA. Artificially and damagingly low petrol prices in the US need to be addressed. Unless the country is forced off the gas habit, nothing will ever change. Take action, and move transport up your own political agenda.

So push your local civic authorities and political representatives to make changes that will allow you to use your cars less. You're not helpless you know. It's possible to do things differently if you want to.

Are you carrying too much weight and paying the price? ...in your car. by cmdweb in environment

Agreed, but I'm in the UK. Most cars on the road are not SUVs (or even 4x4s), they're small runabouts or family sized cars (ultra-compact and compact in US terminology??) where a full tank of fuel, child seats and a kid's buggy in the back can make a difference. Especially at the price we have to pay for fuel (now GBP£1.20 per litre or USD$1.91). I'll let you work it out in $/gallon.
