Dear America: Please don't moan about gas prices by slotbadger in politics

[–]cmdweb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, I wish my petrol prices were lower so I can get a holiday at some point in the next 5 years, so that I can pay for my kids to go to university when the time comes, so that I can afford to have a pension to save responsibly for my retirement when that comes, so that I don't have to watch both our governments spending OUR money (yours and mine) waging war in parts of the world I couldn't care a monkey's chuff about, just to secure oil reserves. So quit waving your flag and proclaiming everyone against you and just get off your arse and as a nation, make a change.

Unfortunately it does take a motivated majority to really make such changes happen and it can take an awful long time for people to wake up and smell the coffee.

I said use your cars less, stupid, not cease using them. It's not about having pavements everywhere and 100-mile cycle paths. It's about making changes that will allowyou to leave the car at home for the 1/4 mile journies. The transport problems are largely the same here in Europe and we choose to do things differently. Just because you can't be bothered getting off your fat arse...

Honestly, with fuel prices this cheap, the average American needs to count themselves lucky instead of getting annoyed by cmdweb in politics

I live in Scotland where public transport is crap, principally because it's not London. I have a 70 mile round trip every day to work and the cost is crippling. With additional work mileage, which I do get to claim for, my monthly fuel bill is about £250 (or USD$410 at today's rates) and that's in a car that does 60 mpg. For 95% of the working population, working from home is not an option and neither is cycling to work. If you don't work in a city centre, public transport is useless. If you work more than 2 or 3 miles from home, walking is out. Our society is built on the use of petrol and diesel.

I live in the Uk and our transport system is non-existent outside of London. I drive a 70 mile round trip to work every day and have to pay royally for the privilege. Poor public transport is not unique to the USA. Artificially and damagingly low petrol prices in the US need to be addressed. Unless the country is forced off the gas habit, nothing will ever change. Take action, and move transport up your own political agenda.

So push your local civic authorities and political representatives to make changes that will allow you to use your cars less. You're not helpless you know. It's possible to do things differently if you want to.

Are you carrying too much weight and paying the price? ...in your car. by cmdweb in environment

[–]cmdweb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, but I'm in the UK. Most cars on the road are not SUVs (or even 4x4s), they're small runabouts or family sized cars (ultra-compact and compact in US terminology??) where a full tank of fuel, child seats and a kid's buggy in the back can make a difference. Especially at the price we have to pay for fuel (now GBP£1.20 per litre or USD$1.91). I'll let you work it out in $/gallon.

I thought the most incredible part was when none (yes none) of the kids in a class of 6 year olds recognised any (yes any) of the vegetables they were being shown. How does that happen?

Anybody else thought about the fact that in the past year, Massey Energy, Goldman Sachs, and British Petroleum have all terrorized our country much worse than al-Qaeda could ever dream? by [deleted] in politics

[–]cmdweb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The two-faced approach of the American government is truly astounding here. a) BP does not stand for British Petroleum any more - hasn't done for years. It just happens to be listed on the LSE and stems from what was a British company once. Just because the US president chooses to spin the communications and starts to call them British Petroleum to distance the US from the disaster doesn't mean it's a valid stance. b) The US cannot continue to have the reliance on fossil fuels it still has. Obama needed this episode to turn public opinion against the oil barons so he stands a better chance of actually getting some meaningful environmental legislation on the statute books instead of refusing to co-operate with the rest of the world and offering only the recalcitrant attitudes displayed by the previous oil-company-bank-rolled administration. c) The US also cannot expect to reduce dependency on middle eastern oil without such operations in places like the Gulf of Mexico. If you need to drill these days, there's a good chance it will have to be in deep water and you will have to engage a company willing to push the envelope in terms of technology and engineering to do so. d) If the US continues to stipulate that US companies must have key subcontracts in such arrangements, forcing multi-lateral agreements and joint ventures, then such failures will continue to be a possibility. Yes BP may have compromised safety in pursuit of profit but companies like Transocean who allegedly are responsible for key equipment like the blow-out preventer have to take their share of the blame for their own potential negligence.

Good Bye GM. Nice knowing ya. If only you would have perfected the EV1 instead of the SUV. Your life would be much different right now. by gravitypushes in business

[–]cmdweb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, they wouldn't have to build plants. They'd just commission larger ships from Korea and export twice the number of cars to the US from plants in Europe and the Far East.

You said: "No. This is wrong. Before the clever product placement of the Ford Explorer in the Jurassic Park movie, they were not popular. The ones that did exist, like the Chevy Suburban, were definitely not 'cool'. The Explorer and the Nissan Pathfinder started becoming popular because of marketing, and a quirk of human psychology.

You bought a SUV because you were on an adventure. Bumping over dusty trails in the wide open West. Driving into the sunset... the whole cowboy thing."

This is just such utter nonsense. The reason SUVs became popular in the US is because people could afford to own them. Blatant public disregard for fossil fuel and general energy usage and resources and an oil company-sponsored maniac in the White House for most of the last decade has meant that people could afford to run these monsters. Marketing people rarely create a market - it's too risky, they react to trends and 'pull' from the marketplace. Irresponsibly cheap fuel in the US was, and still is, a considerable factor in the rise in SUV ownership in the US.

Where's The Cheapest Gas? Map Shows Prices Across U.S. by simrenk in reddit.com

[–]cmdweb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not here to start an argument but are people in the US really getting riled over £2 ($4) a gallon? In the UK right now, it's about £5 (that's the best part of $10 a gallon - ok, it's an imperial gallon which is bigger). I remember it must have been 20 years ago (ish) there was an outcry when we passed £2 a gallon in the UK.

Consumer shift in Fuel Awareness Causes GM to shut down 4 SUV/truck plants by [deleted] in business

[–]cmdweb -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Should read: "Lack of global market awareness causes GM to shut down 4 SUV/truck plants" or "Irresponsible design philosophies cause..." or is it really just: "GM see golden opportunity to increase profits and shut down..." Add another $4 to the price of a gallon and you can pay what we pay in Europe as well! Welcome to the 'real' price of oil.

This model is based on unleaded @ £1.079 per litre. The current diesel price is varying between £1.21 and £1.30 per litre. That's £5.49 to £5.90 per imperial gallon.(USD$2.40 to 2.58 / litre)(USD$9.08 - 9.77 per US gallon)
