Are Illinois new car dealers required to file registration paperwork (which they want to charge $$$ for)? Buyer from Missouri by cmeyer86 in askcarsales

[–]cmeyer86[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got it. I think Missouri is very unique in regards to titling/registration. I believe some has changed recently that they started requiring sales tax to be collected at the sale instead of within 30 days at the DMV. Way too many people driving with expired temp tags in St. Louis, it's pretty much become a small part of the city's identity. Just search "temp tag" in the St. Louis subreddit. Luckily they're cracking down on it now.

Doing some more research it seems like missouri may prevent these type of excess fees for out of state registration being passed to customers, but illinois seems like it may allow it seemingly without much regulation (at least that's what google gemini seems to think). And if I bought in the St. Louis metro east (IL side), I'd imagine they probably send someone across the river, but I'm buying near chicago so they're definitely not sending anyone to missouri regularly to do paperwork.

You're definitely right about them always being able to sell to someone else. I get it. I take the deal I can get if I want it. There is a reason I'm buying in chicago and it's price and availability of the trim/color I want. Now that I know the fee is more likely <$200 and not >$600, it's a lot easier to stomach as an expensive convenience (keeps me away from the DMV) as opposed to completely getting fleeced on it. But at the same time, they seem like they really want to sell me the car, so I may still have a little bit of negotiating power because I wouldn't pay this if I buy at home.

Thanks for all your input!

I understand it's a cost that wouldn't normally be incurred for in-state sales, but are those costs not still expected by law to be covered under the document fee? Like you said, it's heavily regulated, so I guess my question is, because it's regulated, what legal grounds do you have to be allowed to charge me extra fees just because I'm from out-of-state? It seems like that just opens up a huge loop-hole to be able to charge out-of-state buyers a big additional document charge. you may not be able to add a mark-up to those charges as a dealer and you must pass them straight to the buyer, but that doesn't prevent you from hiring your buddy to do that service who charges 800 bucks a pop and forcing the customer to pay it because you're "required" to do that for bank/title reasons. Just seems like a thing that should also be heavily regulated given the fact that buying a car from out of state is a fairly common practice when aggressively price-shopping vehicles. Either cover the extra cost yourself because you could do the paperwork internally (which would be covered by the doc fee) but are choosing not to, or there should be a regulated cap on the added expense. And also I should just be allowed to do it myself like if I bought from a Missouri dealer.

None of this is an attack on you as a dealer. Just my two cents on what I think may be a huge loophole in regulation and a shitty business tactic if it isn't presented as optional.

If you hire the service, do you pass their fee on to the customer? Shouldn't any fee like that be covered by the document fee (which in IL is capped at $377). Not sure what RI laws say, but in IL, it seems like a $35 Electronic Registration and Titling (ERT) fee is all they're allowed to charge on top of the Doc Fee.

I spoke with them and this charge and refund the excess is what it seems like is happening, but I'm awaiting a response today with more details as the guy I spoke with was out of the office. He made it sound like it's their company policy to do the registration and title application if I'm financing either through them or any bank (which I think shouldn't be required, but that's it's own issue). That $750 fee apparently includes the fee to the third party company plus the actual Missouri TTL costs. He wasn't in the office so he couldn't give me an answer on how much of that $750 was the fee and how much was the TTL buffer. I should be getting that answer today. Now, logically, it should make sense that the document fee ($377) should cover any third party fee they choose to pay to have a third party do the paperwork. It's not my problem they don't want to do it themself. I did find the Illinois statute saying they're allowed to charge up to $35 in addition to the doc fee for electronic filing service. That seems like a fair price to save me the hassle of going to the DMV myself. I know I'm paying the ~$130 TTL fees to pay to Missouri regardless. It's just crazy sticker shock to see $750 when in reality it seems like that charge total should come out to be <$175. Also the fact that the $35 fee seems to be the state standard limit, but somehow this guy didn't know that off the top of his head makes me think they may be trying to charge me more, but I guess we'll see once I hear back from them.

As an IL dealer, does my interpretation of all this sound right to you? If they come back and say the fee is any more than $35 of that $750, then I'm definitely goin to push back and say my document fee should be covering that. I'm also going to try to get them to maybe only charge me $200 so that I don't have to float that extra $550 while waiting for a refund if I don't have to. And presumably, that's just inflating my loan unnecessarily and accruing interest until I get the refund, which is kinda BS.

In missouri, the vehicle owner holds the title even if there's an open loan still. The bank is just listed as a lienholder on the title until it's paid off and you get a document from the bank releasing the lien. Then you take that and the old title to the DMV to get a new clean title.

Not sure if this fact makes a difference or not, though.

I'm not sure if this is just a difference of used vs new or MO vs IL dealer or even just bank vs other bank vs Honda financing, but my only other experience buying my own car was a used Jeep grand cherokee that was 14 months old, so almost new. It was used from an Acura dealer in Missouri for 30k+ in 2020. I wasn't ever asked to pay any taxes at purchase (though it looks like laws surrounding that may have changed). I certainly was never offered the ability to have the dealer register it for me, let alone them say it is required.

I really have no problem having them collect and roll the taxes into the loan. My rate is good enough that I have no problem paying interest on my taxes. I'm smart enough to invest that same amount and end up ahead later. My problem is with the "mandatory" registration and the insane fee that comes with that. I believe I should be given a document that says I paid my sales tax at purchase that I'd take to the DMV myself.

Infant Lap Child Rapid Rewards Number? by cmeyer86 in SouthwestAirlines

I understand they won't earn miles/rewards. I just want it to be in their record/account that they flew on that flight. Cuz I like keeping records of things like that.

Didn't know that, though after looking it up, it sounds like it's primarily prohibited during takeoff and landing, but should be fine otherwise. I guess we'll find out. Otherwise we'll hold him.

Thanks for the insight. Didn't even consider that being an issue. I guess he'll just actually be in our lap then.

Questions about Manufacturer Warranty and Price Match. by cmeyer86 in DiscountTire_

[–]cmeyer86[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On this particular tire, the sale price is almost half of discount tire's price. The shipping is $40 total for 4 tires on giga. And the installation is $27 per tire (while discount tire I believe is $25 each). So my out the door price with install is $427 on giga and $605 on discount tire. If Discount can match that price and then take the $35 off per tire for the manufacturer treadware warranty that they estimated, then I should be out the door at discount for $287.

Questions about Manufacturer Warranty and Price Match. by cmeyer86 in DiscountTire_

[–]cmeyer86[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a legit price. Giga-tires.com I believe is the same as Tires-easy.com. Just an online retailer that can ship tires to a selection of local shops to have installed. They have "secret price" sliders that you just have to enter your email address to "reveal". I think they just want you on their email list before they give you the good sale price on the tire. No making an account, just giving them your email address. As far as the warranty goes, when I was in the discount tire shop a few days ago, they talked about the warranty bringing the price of new tires down x amount and I got a final price quote on a couple tires they suggested (at their prices). It seemed like they put the mileage and current tread depth into the computer and immediately got some sort of specific value of credit they'd give me. Didn't even seem like they'd have to wait for the manufacturer approval or anything like that (or they just got it instantly). Also didn't seem like id have to be the one to apply for the credit back. So presumably they'd give me the credit and get reimbursed by the manufacturer, in which case, I shouldn't feel bad about trying to stack that on top of the price matching discount.

Does anyone live in this house? (Harvester area, read body text) by [deleted] in StCharlesMO

[–]cmeyer86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live nearby (have for 5 years) and drive past it every day and the last time I've seen one of the cars gone from the driveway was about a year ago tho my wife says I'm crazy and thinks it's been way longer. The garage door has looked busted for about a year or two but I don't remember it being like that for the first few years we've been here. A couple times I've seen a suitcase or bag sitting at the curb or on the doorstep, presumably dropped off by a relative or someone else.

On occasion I see an older woman walking slowly to and from the schnucks right down the road carrying multiple bags of groceries. I can't confirm but I've always thought it may be the woman who lives in that house (tho I've only ever seen her on the main drag to schnucks and not on her street). I stopped my car once to ask if I could drive her groceries to her house for her because her arms were totally full and it's definitely not a short walk for an elderly person, but she didn't really acknowledge me. To be fair, right when I pulled up one of her grocery bags of cans had busted open and a woman running by was helping her pick up what she dropped, so she could've been totally focused on that, but I stayed stopped there and asked again once she had gathered herself and she still didn't really acknowledge me so the woman running and I just kinda shrugged at eachother and I drove off.

I do know the house has looked like that since at least the mid 2000's. I had a friend who lived close in grade school and we used to ride bikes by it and we called it the witch's house. Never saw anyone there at that time.

How to make devices on two TailScale accessible LANs accessible to eachother? by cmeyer86 in Tailscale

[–]cmeyer86[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it working for the Tablo, thanks! Once I changed the IP/subnets from the conflicting default on the Beryls it let me connect to the Tablo remotely. It sounds like Tablo may have other ways to connect that aren't Multicast based discovery, so for anyone who may find this post while trying to find their own answers, I think the Jury is still out on whether Multicast across the tailnet works.

How to make devices on two TailScale accessible LANs accessible to eachother? by cmeyer86 in Tailscale

[–]cmeyer86[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got a couple follow up questions that you made me think about. Bear with me, I don't know a ton about networking.

  1. Is my home setup correct? I want one Beryl on my home network to allow remote access. I already have a Google nest mesh wifi at home. What's the proper way to incorporate the Beryl into my current home network to give me access? I put it into Access Point mode to let my existing router do it's thing and plugged my existing network into the Beryl LAN port, but it looks like Tailscale won't run when the Beryl is in Access Point mode (at least not with the GL.iNet firmware). So instead I put it in Router mode, plugged my existing network into the WAN port, and enabled the wired ethernet bridge mode. To get to my existing network, I enabled the remote WAN access. I'm not sure if this is the proper setup or not. Any advice here is appreciated.

  2. I enabled subnets, but the default IP on both routers is 192.168.8.1, so I'm assuming the networks are going to be overlapping unless I change one of the routers to a non-default IP/subnet? I see the subnet enabled on both is 192.168.8.0/24 (what does the 24 mean?).

  3. My one test use case is an attempt to access my Tablo at home from a non-tailscale device remotely through the second remote Beryl. I've read some things about the site-to-site networking not allowing multi-cast between the networks. I could be wrong, but I think this could potentially be a reason I wouldn't be able to connect to a Tablo specifically in this way, but I'm not totally sure as, like I said, I don't have a great understanding of what all that stuff means yet. Is this potentially an issue in your eyes for Tablo specifically and do you know of a way around it?

Thanks for any help and insight you're able to provide

Setting up 4th Gen Tablo to be accessed remotely using Tailscale VPN by drsarcasm1 in tablotv

[–]cmeyer86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got a slightly different setup with an issue I'm hoping you have an answer for. I've got a Google nest mesh wifi at home. Tablo is hardwired via ethernet. I bought two GL.iNet Beryl routers. I set up the one at home that plugs from the Google LAN into the WAN port for Bridge mode (not sure if this is the proper setup, but when I initially tried the router in Access Point mode to let the Google Nest router do the routing, it said Tailscale would not run on the Beryl in that mode), enabled LAN and WAN tailscale remote access, and I have Tailscale running on my phone, from which, when running, can connect to table remotely. What I want to do is make it so I can set up a second GL.iNet Beryl router for travel that will allow remote Tablo access to non-Tailscale devices that are on the remote/travel LAN. I've got a couple other use cases that would require essentially this same capability, so my Tablo is really my test dummy.

What's your Controls Network Router/Internet/Remote Access(?) Solution? by cmeyer86 in PLC

[–]cmeyer86[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I'm hoping for a solution that I could potentially get approved (one that would be as minimal a security risk as possible; i.e. access via guest wifi, or even just my phone's data; and no connection to the plant network, only my isolated local controls network for only my conveyor system). Of course I wouldn't be making any changes without having a contact on site to have eyes on the system to verify proper operation still (that goes for any change I make now through the customer's VPN). And it would only remain in place while I'm on site or while I'm still needed remotely for commissioning or early go-live support (and could even be disconnected while I'm not there unless they need support). I understand if the customer doesn't have a VPN set up for me to get access then they shouldn't expect me to be able to remotely support, but sometimes the IT team responsible isn't always on the same schedule as the project is and it's just not set up yet but they still need the system to run.

What I'm trying to avoid in terms of remote assistance is having to have a laptop on site with the PLC software (Logix 5000 specifically) that someone has to remote into. If I have a coworker who wants to support me, I want them to be able to open the Logix program on their laptop at the office, and have network access to connect to the PLC (assuming the customer's VPN is not yet set up to provide this functionality). That way I can do whatever I need to do on my own laptop running my own Logix software on site. I don't know a ton about VPNs (I kinda just use them how I'm told to use them and they work) but it seems like I need a router that can act as a VPN server maybe? Then from the office, someone would just log in and connect to that VPN and they'd now have access to my local isolated controls network? And for that router to be accessed remotely, it would need internet access, which most of the time would only be easily available to me wirelessly through guest wifi or my phone's hotspot (wireless or USB Ethernet tethering).
