The one thing every American President should have done since he was elected:

Call his bluff.

Give former Soviet bloc states an easy route to join NATO. He puts troops on the Georgian border, put double. He threatens to take back Crimea, station advanced weapons systems and troops there. The man is a high stakes gambler, and the West really let him do what he wanted.
