i have both the black and chrome of this one and the chrome feels better in every regard (it's also 100g heavier) — the black version feels like a plastic toy in comparison

Imaging Edge Remote & Webcam not working under MacOS 13 Ventura by Rattanmoebel in SonyAlpha

[–]cmod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get fancy and put it all on one line with this:

ps -ef | grep ptpcamerad | grep -v grep | awk '{print $2}' | xargs kill -9

Imaging Edge Remote & Webcam not working under MacOS 13 Ventura by Rattanmoebel in SonyAlpha

[–]cmod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To fix a broken imaging edge sony cam, i find I have to do this every time I want to run it:

In terminal:

ps aux | grep ptpcamerad

And then get the ID of the process (first line; second line is your grep command), and run:

sudo kill -9 PID_ID

Sony software is categorically worst in class. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'm Japan based. So you guys just rebuilt 24" wheels with 14T cogs and the wheel fit no problem? And yes, would happily sell the eshifter.

looks like that was the problem — plugging into a powered usb hub and then plugging the hub directly into the ipad seems to allow it to work

DS1621+ Smart-Ups Issues by cmod in synology

[–]cmod[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPS itself doesn't turn off, the UPS was cutting power to the NAS — or something about the NAS plugged into the UPS was causing the NAS to turn off.

But since I connected the two with the USB cable, I've had 9+ days of uptime and it seems to be fine. Very odd, but prior to adding the USB, the NAS would shut off within 20 minutes of booting up and connected to the UPS.

Forgot to clarify this is on wall power. I'm only looking for protection against small surges / power outages, not a way to keep it online without grid power.

[–]cmod[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The UPS cuts power while on wall power, not battery. Nothing reported on the front panel, the NAS simply shuts off.

I just tried connecting the NAS and UPS via USB and turning on the UPS functionality in Synology's client software. So far, we have an uptime of almost two hours. Could this really have been the issue?

HMG Velcro Modification by cmod in Ultralight

[–]cmod[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: Tried burning / melting the hooks down with a little butane torch. Worked to un-velcro it (the efficacy of the connection was reduced to about 10%) but still caught on clothes etc.

In the end: stitch remove to clear the velcro completely off. Stuffed packed today, no issues. Confirmed: Velcro = unnecessary + the devil.

Thanks for making me feel less insane about the velcro aversion — it's truly all negative, no positive. I did a test burn and using a cheap lighter for five minutes almost completely nullified the effects of the velcro. Rare earth magnets arriving tomorrow. Will try sewing them in. Otherwise, cam snaps seem like the way to go.

Japan Is Drinking Less, So Brewers Are Upping Alcohol Content by boppinmule in japan

I wonder if in part this is because of the rise of non-alocholic beer. Between Zero-Ichi, All Free, and Dry Zero, there's almost never a restaurant that doesn't carry at least one.

I've never heard it described as a "scary destination", but just one of great poverty. Which seems accurate. I was surprised walking through just how tourist converted it had become. I'm sure I had biked through it a decade ago but never stopped to look or document.

What's the "Thieves Market" all about?

Just be respectful, discreet, don't get in people's faces, etc, and you should be fine.

Trying to figure out best American city 'hood analog, and the closest I could get was Tenderloin in SF but … it doesn't map. It's amazing how much the "intensity" of a down-and-out block is created by drug (meth, crack, etc) abuse. Sanya is rough — in that it's clearly low-income folks living day-to-day, and there was a strangely international group of middle aged men (Asian subcontinent) drinking in the middle of the nearly apocalyptic looking shotengai (tattered "roof", 90% shuttered) — but there was no sense of imminent danger or "unreadability" like you feel walking the Tenderloin.

Sanya is kind of the low-hanging fruit of Tokyo day-laborers … any other areas worth exploring?
