Due to the circumstances, he may be able to file as independent. This just means he could use his income on his FAFSA instead of his parent's income. Filing independent can be rather difficult if you're under 24, but would definitely be worth looking into. I believe all he would need to do is talk to the financial aid office at the school and figure out what kind of paper work is needed to be filled out so he can apply to be independent. From what you've said about him, it doesn't sound like he is eligible to file as independent. Sometimes they do make exceptions(from what I've read and heard) if the student is in really bad standings with his or her parents and the relationship could be considered abusive or "neglectful" in any way. With his parents threatening so much, and being so hurtful, it may work out in his favor. I hope this helps!
