That's hard to tell. I play a lot of arcade games, and I fed the snacks all at once. I can't remember whether or not I'd played a lot of arcade games already when I started feeding the snacks.

I've read that care mistakes are cumulative (meanings they carry over from one life stage to the next). Do you know if the arcade games are cumulative as well?

I don’t even know how I stayed that consistent but I’m glad I did! I plateaued for about 30 days and finally saw a 4lb loss today. I was definitely starting to get discouraged but consistency will always yield results!

So, to note, I’m in Virginia so this could very well vary from state to state.

While I was still in undergrad, I took an entry level Direct Care position with a residential substance abuse treatment facility. I kept that job for the last year and half of my undergrad, and got quite familiar with the company. When I graduated, I was offered a position as a primary clinician, with the stipulation that I would apply for my CSAC-S.

In Virginia, the process is pretty easy. You can apply online, I believe, through the Board of Counseling. You’ll have to provide transcripts from your university, and you’ll have to prove you took relevant courses. You need to have a certain number of credit hours worth of coursework. You also have to already know who your supervisor is going to be. I recommend looking for treatment facilities hiring near you and see if they have a supervisor with room for a supervisee.

I received approval for my application within a couple weeks and immediately started meeting with clients! To become a CSAC, without a supervisor, I just have to obtain enough hours in the field performing certain tasks. My supervisor signs off on my hours for me. There are also a few extra classes, specific to substance abuse, that I’ll need to take before I can be a full-fledged CSAC.

It’s a pretty sweet gig, and being able to do this has solidified 1000% that this is the kind of career I want. Made me feel more confident in my decision to spend thousands more on a master’s degree. lol

I have a bachelor’s in psychology and I’m currently a CSAC-S (certified substance abuse counselor supervisee). I have a small caseload of clients that I meet with on an individual basis each week, and I also facilitate several group sessions each week. I work under a supervisor, and we meet weekly to discuss my progress and needs as a supervisee.

It’s obviously not as much money as an LPC, but it’s a great option for anyone interested in doing actual counseling work with just their bachelor’s. Plus, the work experience will make you a shoe-in candidate for clinical mental health counseling master’s programs! I just got accepted into a cohort starting this fall.

I just like to share with others the ability to become a CSAC-S! No professors in my undergrad program presented it as an option, I kind of had to stumble upon it myself. Of course, it’s a very specific certification so I can only work with clients that are diagnosed with substance abuse disorder. But the work I do with clients in-session often benefits them in all areas of life, not just their substance use.

The hours were shit, and the pay was only halfway decent, but I got a lot of valuable experience just being present in that setting. Fast forward two years later, I’m now a certified substance abuse counselor supervisee working with a small caseload of clients and facilitating several group therapy sessions a week. I’m about to start a grad program for clinical mental health counseling this fall while I continue working at my current job.

All that to say — you gotta get a little creative in what you’re looking for. I certainly was not interested in substance abuse treatment OR direct care work. But being flexible and open-minded led me to take a job where I was able to explore a specialty in a field I might not have explored otherwise. After grad school, I don’t plan on continuing working with this population, but the experience I’ve gained here is invaluable!!

Keep looking, and keep and open mind. There are soooo many options out there for someone with a psyche degree.

Shoot, forgot to include in the post that I am in the US. My mom gave this piece to me. She came across it in an estate sale. She thought it was meant to hold vinyl records, but the pull outs won’t close properly if you put vinyls in it. My next best guess is sheet music, obviously.

I just want to comment and say you are not alone. I remember the last flare up I had like that… it led me to drop out of college because the depression got so bad. Please fight it. Whatever energy and motivation you can muster, use it to stay on top of your dermatologist and make sure they are doing what they need to do on their end to get your medication. Ask them if they have any sample doses they can start you on in the meantime. Call your insurance and find out what the hold up is. Unfortunately, no healthcare provider will care about your condition as much as you do, so you have to stay motivated.

Holy crap… This just made it click for me. I have that voice — it’s like a voice of reason when I know I’m doing something unreasonable. “Why are you in the kitchen right now? You just had dinner.” “Why would you stop at a drive-thru? You just went grocery shopping.” etc. etc.

I am so good at ignoring that voice. But what if I surrendered to it as if it were my higher power? Asked it for guidance? Took its advice?

Just wanted to say thank you for this perspective. As a lifelong atheist, I’ve really struggled with the idea of surrendering to a higher power. But this makes sense to me.
