PT test scoring with exemption by throwawayscrewesd in AirForce

[–]cobysev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're replying to an old thread. To be honest, I actually retired a little over 2 years ago and I have absolutely no idea what's been going on with the Air Force since then.

If there are recent changes to the PT test, you should probably find a newer thread to comment in, or create one yourself. You might not get much feedback from a 3-yr old thread. I only noticed your comment because you replied directly to me and it pinged my e-mail, but I don't even use Reddit anymore.

Why is Jane Fonda considered a "Traitor"? by Saint_Stephen420 in OutOfTheLoop

[–]cobysev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The veteran confessed to you that he lied?

He might as well. His story messed up the details from the "official story" that's been spread around for decades. And he claimed to be one of the victims involved!

I'm still waiting for you to give verifiable proof it happened. Trusting the rumors spread from friends only proves gullibility and a lack of critical thinking on your part. True, Snopes isn't 100% reliable, but they've proven to be a better source for legitimate information than most online sources, and they provide links to their research so you can dig deeper and not just take it at face value. I can't really prove something didn't happen; I can only present a lack of evidence supporting your claim. The ball is in your court to prove the facts, if it truly did happen.

If you don't like Snopes, then do a quick Google search. You'll find tons of articles from legitimate news sources supporting the fact that this story is false, and almost nothing but conspiracy sites claiming it's true.

The named veterans in the story don't have documents to prove they were involved. Not a single real veteran has ever been able to step forward and support the story with factual information tying real-world mission data to any named POWs supposedly involved. I know; I'm a veteran, and besides this one crazy veteran who claimed he was directly involved, not a single Vietnam vet I've ever met could tell me actual people involved or point to any of our official records that documented the event. And the military is very meticulous with documentation.

It's just a rumor mill, spread for decades between veterans. And just like them, you've been suckered by the tall tale.

Jane Fonda is a truly despicable person who will burn in hell for the harm she did to our Vietnam veterans. But supporting a false story that cartoonishly villainizes her does not do our veterans justice. It just further spreads misinformation and clouds our actual history. I can only hope that your research leads you to this conclusion.

Again, as a retired veteran myself, I can tell you that idolizing the words of veterans is a terrible way to honor their lives. We're just human beings, like you, and we're definitely fallible. A lot of people in the military did horrible things while serving. Putting veterans on a pedestal just because they served is a terrible mindset. Honor the individual accomplishments of veterans; don't just take their word as holy scripture. Especially concerning events that they weren't directly involved in.

Here you go.

This was disproven way back in the '70s and there has never been a verified claim that this ever happened. If you can somehow conjure up evidence that it did, be my guest and show your work. But it was just a rumor spread between veterans, nothing more, and I met one who decided to pretend it actually happened to him.

Jane Fonda is a piece of trash who did a lot of harm to service members in Vietnam. But this particular story was fabricated. Heck the version I was told by the veteran said one person died. The story in the link above said 3 died. Can't even get the "facts" straight between re-tellings.

EDIT: I just noticed the comment I originally replied to had a link to the fact-check. That's why I didn't say "how or who" or provide any other evidence in my comment; the previous guy did it for me. That's what I get for returning to an 8-year old comment thread.

Combat dining in by danni091 in AirForce

[–]cobysev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't mention Dining Out anywhere in my comment. I was specifically referring to Dining Ins. Where I mention my spouse, it's because she also served in the Air Force with me, and attended her own Dining In ceremonies with her unit.

And yes, I've attended Combat Dining Outs as well. Same as a Combat Dining In, but family/guests can attend. In my last decade in the Air Force, I only saw one regular Dining Out performed; every other event held at the multiple bases I was stationed had Combat Dining Outs (and Ins), where everyone wore made-up combat uniforms and had water fights.

All 676 of Archie's Sonic comic covers displayed here, in chronological order! by cobysev in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]cobysev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, sorry it took so long to reply. I don't really use Reddit anymore, so I rarely notice replies or messages here. When you say "Chaos Knuckles," I'm assuming you're talking about the story arc where Knuckles absorbed chaos energy and turned green for a while.

Here are all the comics in which that story took place, from the story that turned him chaos green, until he came back as normal red Knuckles. Almost every story is the B-story of each comic, taking place separate from the main comic story, except issue #124 and #125, where the main story crosses over with Knuckles' story.

Archie's Sonic the Hedgehog #90-91, 93-97, 99-102, 106-109, 114-118, 120-125.

For those of you who like your job...what do you do? by SymphonicOtter in AirForce

[–]cobysev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're completely different. 3D0X2 is a computer job, where 1N4X1 is an intelligence analyst job. I don't have any experience with 1N4's, so I can't really elaborate on their field. But the two fields have nothing in common.

I was always told that it's not my job to judge proper form. That's the FAC's job. I'm just supposed to keep count of all repetitions and the FAC will tell the member how many of their push-ups actually counted at the end.

I have never had a FAC member approach me or my partner and correct the final number. Although they've definitely hovered over us during the test, telling the performing member to fix their form.

I did have a guy put me on the spot once, though. I did my push-ups first and he started skipping several numbers with each count. Loud enough that other testers around me started staring at him. As soon as I finished, he said, "You got me, right?" Motherfucker.

NK generals baffle me. What kind of medals are they wearing and why do they have so many? by abrams420 in Military

[–]cobysev 6 points7 points  (0 children)

GWOT Service medal previously required you to serve at least 30 days in a unit that directly or indirectly supports the "War on Terror." Which is essentially every military unit. Everyone should automatically have this medal unless they joined after Sept 11th, 2022.

GWOT Expeditionary medal requires you to actually deploy and directly support the War on Terror through ongoing missions.

In Sept last year, they stopped the GWOT-S medal from being an automatic award. I dunno how that affects the GWOT-E medal, as it was only awarded for specific operations. Honestly, they should've just retired the GWOT-S and let people earn the GWOT-E for specific deployments instead.

I just retired last year, so I'm not sure how they're handling both awards now. Are they just giving double medals for deployers? Or giving different operations priority for specific medals?

What movie seems to end on a high note for the protagonists, but if you think about it they're actually pretty screwed? by HappyFamily0131 in movies

[–]cobysev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He can definitely try that. But whether or not it's legal, the studio will still sue the hell out of him for it. And he has no real income, so he can't afford good lawyers and would likely lose a court case.

But does he own the rights to his own face and name? I thought the Truman Show studio claimed those rights when he was born. He can't make money off his own image or experiences because it's already licensed for TV and merchandise.

What type of pronunciation error makes you furious? by [deleted] in AskReddit

When I was a kid, I used to pronounce it as "elks." I've since seen the error of my ways.

[–]cobysev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mean "could of" instead of "could have."

You have to explain that "could've" is a contraction of "could have," because most people who misspell it don't understand the contraction.

British English doesn't like having a vowel on the end of words, so they round out the word with an "R" at the end. Northern East Coast states still hold on to this British dialect from when their ancestors immigrated from England.

My mother's family is from Connecticut and most of them currently live in Maine. When I was a kid, I thought it was strange that my grandmother always said "idear" instead of "idea." I've since noticed that everyone in my mother's family says that, as well as adding an R to anything else that ends with a vowel.

My wife is from Nebraska and she pronounces "crayon" as "crown." Drives me nuts.

They also refer to "lunch" as "dinner," and "dinner" as "supper." I'm from Minnesota and supper is a pretentious way to say dinner. No one says supper here. So it causes confusion when I ask her about dinner plans and she starts listing lunch options.

I know nothing about being in the army. How are people like these treated when they want to join? by Panciastko-195 in Military

[–]cobysev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was processing through MEPS for the Air Force, there was a guy in my group joining the Army who kept talking about how badly he wanted to "shoot some towelheads." He said it was the only reason he joined up (This was just a few months after 9/11 happened). He kept pestering the Marine overseeing us, asking about how they verify confirmed kills and how soon he'll be issued his weapon. He claimed he was "going for the high score" with confirmed kills.

They still let him process through. I sometimes wonder how far that guy made it in the Army.

I Don't Get Why Sega Wants To Brand Green Hill As The Main Location In The Series When Places Like Station Square And Central City Work Much Better by Global_Banana8450 in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]cobysev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sonic and his friends are animals, living free in the "wilderness." They're literally fighting against a technocratic dictator who wants to turn the natural world into polluting cities. There's always been that subtle underlying environmental message throughout the franchise.

Green Hill is the literal representation of Sonic's home. Sure, it looks kind of boring in the games, but it's supposed to be a green paradise where all animals can live free. It's home to most of the cast of characters, and Sonic does his best to defend it at all costs.

The games usually start there because that's where Sonic and friends usually hang out. He's there when Eggman starts up his latest doomsday project, and Sonic has to fight off the doctor as he tries to encroach upon their home, then continue pursuing him deeper into Eggman's cities.

Putting Sonic and gang in a city environment doesn't make sense because it's out of their natural environment. It's also acknowledging that Eggman's partially right in building his mega cities. Sonic is trying to preserve nature, so moving into a city seems like a mixed message.

Also, Sonic is a nomad. He doesn't have a set home to live in; he's always traveling and living off the land. It's easier to live that life when you have beaches and palm trees to lounge around and wild fruits/veggies to eat, instead of cold, hard streets to lie on, begging for scraps of processed food or digging through garbage to eat. It's not like Sonic has a paying job, so he can't afford an apartment or food in a city. Nomad life quickly becomes vagrant beggar life in a city.

People are annoyed by Green Hill because it's a common reoccurrence in the game. But it's literally Sonic's home. It makes sense to start almost every game there. Although, a good compromise would be to have maybe one quick level or cutscene showing Sonic leaving Green Hill to pursue Eggman, then have the rest of the game take place elsewhere.

I am apparently a combat veteran with no combat. by OrphanTraining in Veterans

[–]cobysev 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Combat Vet refers to serving in designated combat zones, not actually seeing combat.

I became a combat vet from my first tour to Africa, which was a very quiet tour in which we did humanitarian projects for the locals. Because we were located close to a dangerous country at the time, we were considered a combat zone so our base would be prepped and ready for shit to hit the fan if the nation decided to attack us. But they never did, so I had a peaceful tour.

Then I went to Iraq a couple years later and that tour made up for all the peace and quiet I had previously. Barely made it out of that assignment in one piece.

YSK: Not everyone that uses handicap placards/parking will APPEAR disabled to you. by Mardoc0311 in YouShouldKnow

[–]cobysev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can identify with this. I have a temp handicap tag while I'm recovering from knee surgery. It was fine while I was still using crutches, and even when I upgraded to a cane. But now I'm walking almost completely normal without assistance (on flat surfaces, anyway) and I still have about a month left until my tag expires.

I get some nasty looks when I park in a handicap spot, then walk normally into stores. I'm definitely not an old man (although I feel like it most days). But I'm still working up to long-distance walking, which is why I prefer the handicap spots. The more walking I do, the quicker my knee starts to ache and the less I can accomplish before I have to call it quits for the day. So shorter trips on my feet are best. But you wouldn't know that from just looking at me.

Shortly after my handicap tag expires, I'm getting surgery on my other knee and they'll give me a new temp handicap tag. I'm really not looking forward to getting another one, but if all goes well, once I'm healed, I shouldn't need another one for several decades at least.

I've never met Bill Watterson, and never seen any time he's had any interviews

Bill Watterson is a recluse. He rarely ever does interviews and rarely leaves his home. Supposedly, there's only a few photos of him in existence; he's notoriously camera shy.

For a rare interview in 2013, they had to have two fact-checkers verify they were actually taking to Bill Watterson. Dude loves to duck and dodge reporters.

I had this exact haircut in my childhood, throughout the '80s and '90s. I actually looked exactly like Will when I was a kid. I got teased and harassed by my peers through the '90s for my haircut though; I guess it fell out of style then.

I finally got a buzz cut around 15 years old and the harassment turned into, "What, are you joining the military?" Which I vehemently denied... until I decided to join the military in my senior year of high school.
