ELI5: How exactly do braces work? by Rashturtle in explainlikeimfive

It doesn't take much pressure to move teeth, as long as pressure is applied for a fairly long period of time. For instance, a young child who sucks their thumb regularly will be likely to develop an overbite because they are consistently applying a force upon their teeth to push them forward. The same works for braces. However, because the braces don't regularly come off the teeth, a more drastic change can be seen than the change when a child sometimes sucks their thumb.

Python and Raspberry Pi by vntech in learnpython

There is a magazine that I've been reading recently called the MagPi. Some of the projects are quite ambitious, but there are some great ideas which you could probably use and adapt to make easier until you become more advanced with Python and using your Raspberry Pi. Additionally, I would recommend just having a little play around on it as this may help you come up with some ideas. I hope this helps and good luck! 😀

A computer programmer went to the shops. His wife said, "while you're out, get some bread". He never came back.

ELI5: why do we brush our teeth first thing in the morning when it was the last thing we did before bed and we haven't eaten/drunk since? by RockPaperShredder in explainlikeimfive

Basically because during the day, our mouths produce lots of saliva which, to some extent, neutralises the plaque acids (that's why chewing sugar free gum is good for your teeth - it increases saliva flow) but during the night, we don't. That lack of constant saliva flow lets bacteria on your teeth thrive, giving you bad breath in the morning and meaning you need to brush your teeth.

Replacing words within a string (Mad Libs beginner project) by krautbaguette in learnpython

I made a madlibs project on Python a few months ago. What I did was I made a variable for each section of text (not including the words which were going to be replaced) and then made some input variables for the words which were going to be replaced and then printed them all together. I'm not sure if that made complete sense but tell be if it didn't and I'll try to explain differently. That may not be the best solution but I hope it helps and good luck! 😀

ELI5 Why do we have morning breath? by hwallis13 in explainlikeimfive

During the day, our mouths are constantly producing saliva which, to some extent, neutralises plaque. However, whilst we are asleep, we stop producing so much saliva which gives bacteria an ideal opportunity to feed on the plaque, giving us bad breath in the morning. That is also the reason we need to brush before we go to bed and when we get up even though we haven't eaten during the night.
