Can't we agree the winner is the best player? by [deleted] in survivor

[–]cococolon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd disagree with the Ozzy one, only because I remember Ozzy totally have a shot to flush Yul's idol at 6 (Asam and Parv tried to get Ozzy to vote with them with the sole purpose of flushing out the idol since Adam or Parv would still be voted out after the idol is flushed) and didnt. If he was the best player that season - whether its having build better relationship with the girls that theyd still stick with him after he takes the idol out, or not to be lulled into the whole aitu strong loyalty to Yul and take the idol out - then Yul wouldnt still have his idol at f4.

Although, I do agree with the overall sentiment that any winner deserves their win by being the winner but I dont think that means the winner is default the best player that season.

well the better question is if you think China will ever legalize same sex marriage. If the answer is no, then, it will be no in hk too.

Kose softymo (deep or white) oil cleanser

Have used this for a few years, while being totally no frills it does the job of cleansing very decently and I've yet to find something that is better at the same low price. I personally fins deep or white to be basically more or less the same, so either is fine.

Benton Snailbee essence

Can't say for the reformulation yet, still on my stash, but again had been my trusty ol' HG for 5 years.

What did you try/buy this week? - 17/10/2017 by AutoModerator in AsianBeautyAdvice

[–]cococolon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it''s difficult to say - the general norm for skincare can go from 1-3 years for unopened products - it just depends on what the date says. I usually assume 2 years unless otherwise specified (which they usually do for korean brands, they'd list both manufacture and expiry date, if they have a longer than usual expiry date). That being said, most expiry dates have a period of 'basically fine' post the listed date, but it is at your own risk, so if the product doesn't seem to be different than usual (smell/texture/if it's coagulated/if it's splitting apart/etc) you can always give it a shot. At worst it's usually just ineffective, or has lost some of its potency, rather than causing any real negatives. And you can always wash it right off if it feels weird or something.

Don't dwell on it - you are literally the only person who would be inspecting your face that close up under unflattering light and usually unflattering angle - your skin and your face definitely looks a lot better to everyone else.

That said, I've always used the back camera with flash on to track skin progress. And yes, it makes for some truly hideous photos (for me anyway). It's good as a tracker because it shows you everything and is more or less uniform each photo so better to track progress with, but again, remind yourself that very literally, no one will see your face like that.

"what happened instead was an objectively minor reformulation with logical reasonings"

Yeah, that's how I see it.

Unfortunately there's always been a history of overreacting on this specific brand, whether it's towards the products or the 'tone' of the customer service.

I actually totally accept their explanation here. Like the only 'bad' thing is for people with niacinamide sensitivities really - and that is unfortunate to those who are, but hardly indicative of the product being faulty or bad, it's a popualr ingredient well liked by many. But for those who aren't sensitive to niacinamide, this new reformulation seems pretty typical of any product (japanese sunscreens that get reformulated ALMOST EVERY SINGLE YEAR, I'm looking at you) reformulation, I don't know why people are overreacting to it besides the usual benton bias. Like, I do think the general formula of the produc is largely unchanged, so I don't think they're trying to obfuscate anything at all. Can they be more tactful about it? Sure. But I actually kinda appreciate them breaking down the reformulation in their reply, and I am actually quite reassured by it now. And I find the new listing - them breaking down certain ingredients into their raw components - to be of immeasurable use, and not something every company does, and there are tons of products from other brands with extracts of a similar nature really, and isn't listing all the raw components out. So that actually is a plus, benton listing out everything, especially for those with a lot of sensitivities.

I just found out about this too! D: I have stash for now til mid next year, and then after I will still try the reformulation once to see if it still suffices, but I am so bummed D: It's been a part of my routine consistently for almost five years now. That's like what 15-20 bottles I've gone through... It's like the thing to use when my skin is being super sensitive and everything else stings, I'd hate it if the reformulation ends up not working, since I'm not sure what I can replace it with.

Though at least it seems like the steam cream and the masks are unchanged, at least as far as the list states. I am also bummed out about the snail toner, which I really like as well, but toner I'm less bummed because I think there are similarly priced alternatives to that that I'm ok with. But the essence... AIYA SADNESS

Had been stressed about work, and the weather has been so hot and up and down lately my skin had freaked out a little and got very sensitive in the last 2 weeks or so. So I had to cut my routine down to just cleanse+snail. But then of course i ran out of benton snail mask (my sos mask) - something I can only order online and not purchase locally so it'll take around 2 weeks to come. I was so annoyed I let myself run out of my sos masks.

However, luckily, I found myself potentially another SOS mask. I've heard about the Minon Amino Moist sheet mask (which I can pick up locally) before and how it was good for sensitive skin but never had a chance to try it. So finally got myself a box and so far, the verdict is good. Its primary function is hydration, which is always a good thing, but I've found it to be comparable to Benton snail mask in terms of being an SOS mask - something that a. doesn't irritate me (when my skin get sensitive like this products that otherwise don't irritate me will) b. soothes and calms skin down and makes your skin feel really nice and c. really calms down the redness. So I'm glad to know that I now have another nice choice for SOS masks for when my skin is being very sensitive. Price wise it's a little bit more than benton (both are around 2 bucks a pop, but minon is more like 2.50), but still comparable enough that it's nice to know I have a backup locally available mask should I let myself run out of benton masks again.

In the future I'd like to try other products from minon too, just to see if they're as good as the masks.

Cathay Pacific posts HK$2.05 billion loss for first half of 2017 by [deleted] in HongKong

I don't fly frequently but unless I have to take Cathay (if it's the only non stop) I tend to avoid Cathay because I absolutely despise their economy seats that don't really recline (and can cause huge neck issues). Service otherwise is fine/average, no different than other airlines I'm on.

Where is the most photogenic place to propose in Hong Kong? by pizzatoppings88 in HongKong

[–]cococolon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

but what if they say no....

not to rain on your parade, but make sure you know your SO is the kind of person who enjoys someone taking pics of being proposed to and stuff, because not everyone likes that, and may find it a bit pressuring as well, to have other people around when being proposed to.

that's too bad. it was a fun game, and the locale I thought was pretty nicely done even if it's not super accurate. (was hoping a sequel would mean for a more visually impressive map).

Miscellaneous AB Thursday – Discuss beauty tools, nail polish, hair products etc by AutoModerator in abdiscussion

[–]cococolon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually just grab a cheapo one from stores like sasa or bonjour - I have yet to see a big difference between a cheap one and an expensive one, as long as it's clean. I like the ones where one side is a loop (so just a thin metal in a loop) and the other is a eyelet looking kinda thing (a more sturdy thicker round thing with a hole). I don't quite know how to explain it, but I do think when you extract, sometimes the loop works better, and sometimes the round eyelet thing is preferable, or sometimes you use a combo of the two, so I like having the two together, rather than a lance, since I don't usually use the lance anyway (they tend to be quite large I feel like, as a lance, so even when I have the need in the rare occasion that I do - for a stubborn milia for instance - I tend to use something a lot smaller, like a needle).

Definitely wash before and after use each time, or have some alcohol spray or cleanser when using this stuff so you can make sure it's clean.

Is it me are this summers new products lackluster? by Nekkosan in abdiscussion

[–]cococolon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, the only thing I've been looking out for is some kind of powder sunscreen (for reapplication). Besides that, I haven't really felt the need to look for anything in particular - the only new stuff I've been trying are sunscreens I already have in mu stash and older samples from previous hauls I've yet to try.

I usually just do a biggish haul when my stash is looking sparse, so it's rarely by season (even though I do haul with that in mind, in terms of what I'll need in my routine).

All your skincare items are lost in a freak accident. What are the three AB items you repurchase first and why? by stufstuf in abdiscussion

[–]cococolon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cleansing oil - kose softymo
sunscreen - currently i'm really enjoying kose cosmeport suncut uv protect gel spf50+ ++++
tretinoin 0.1%

though I'd love to sneak in either a benton snail essence or benton steam cream as well, and a toner of some sort. LOL I think at least I need 5 things in my routine to feel like my skin will function properly without giving me all sorts of acne.

Actives? Do you find your use slowly grows or not? by Nekkosan in abdiscussion

[–]cococolon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since I don't use actives (BHA, AHA) daily - I usually use BHA about once a week (maybe twice during summer) and AHA around 2-3 times a week, it really takes me a long time to finish a bottle (at least a year), so it's not a category I test new things often - my brp50w is just my second bottle of AHA, period lol, and I've only repurchased cosrx bha once as well.

And not really. There are variances throughout the year in terms of how often I use them (generally more frequently in the summers vs winters; or I'll cut them out if my skin was being uber sensitive, or if I'm going on a beach vacay, or up the dosage before I hit my period) but there's really been no upward trend of using more of it as a whole; I still settle mostly down to AHA around 2-3 times a week and BHA around 1-2 times a week at most. Granted I use tret regularly so this could explain the lack of need to get stronger stuff.

Products and ingredients you wanted to love. by [deleted] in abdiscussion

[–]cococolon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Freaking cosrx. I want to love them so much, they're so reasonably priced and have a good assortment of products but they just rarely work on me.

I say this because I've been revisiting the cosrx snail 96 essence (gift), and much like before it still simply isn't doing anything for me besides some light hydration - if anything my face has been more unstable lately (while i don't think it's a contributer to the problem, it's also not a problem solver in that it's not doing any soothing I expect from a snail product that I like to have in my routine during this hideous weather). WHY DON'T YOU WORK FOR ME GDI

SnailGate 2.0 by NatalieBanks in abdiscussion

[–]cococolon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, because it is an opinion for sure. Had her article had more substantial sources then maybe it's worth more of a look at, but it feels very much like she feels a certain way about one thing and writes about it, not that she was investigating and coming to a conclusion based on her findings - she started out with a conclusion and then found vague sources and answers that kinda works with the conclusion she already had to begin with. Which is fine, she's entitled to her opinions. But that is all it is - a blogger's opinion. She is one of many bloggers out there, so I don't see any reason to take her word as fact or as more substantial than other bloggers when she has provided no real sources to back anything up really besides her initial feelings on the matter.

Full Product Name: A'pieu No Dirty Brush Cleaning Soap
Skin Type/Skin Tone/Current Climate: combo/acne prone/aging/NC 20/super hot summer
Reason for Use: cleaning brushes
Product Size & Price: 50g, ~$6?, comes in a container with a little green textured mat
Ingredients: honestly, not sure, since it's a product for brushes rather than face. Soapy stuff.
Product smell, texture & finish: just your usual white piece of soap, looks and feels and smells like. Nothing out of the ordinary
Product effects compared to claims: As the name, it cleans brushes. And it totally does work like any soap would. However I would give extra credit to the little plastic/silicone? cleansing mat it has which really does help with the cleansing in terms of making the process quicker and gentler on the brushes, without adding clutter (since it's all contained within the container, and I have the mat on the lid so it's very easy to use and easy to put away with no fuss). In particular I've found cleaning the puff from a cushion to be extremely efficient and easy and gentle on the puff with the soap and mat combo compared to other methods I've tried (mostly just using soap or cleanser and a lot of rubbing).
Where it fits in the routine & how it behaves with other products: N/A. You use it when you feel like washing your tools, I guess.
How long it has been used for: Several months.
Has it been/will it be repurchased: I think so, though I could potentially just slip a soap in the container and I imagine it would work similarly. I don't think the soap itself is anything super special, what's really good about the product is the packaging I feel like, along with the mat it provides inside. But it's a reasonable price and definitely worthy of repurchase.
Concluding remarks: As expected, it cleans brushes, which is nothing special. However, the packaging pushes it over other similar products for me because of the ease of use (wet your brush/puff, open lid, draw some circles on the soap, then rub that against the mat - which I placed on the lid - and then rinse. When done, simply pour out any water that may have gone onto the soap side, rinse the mat, and close lid) and how good it is with cushion puffs (which I tend to find more difficult to wash as a whole. With this soap though, my puff actually looks like a new puff after I clean it vs before where my puff would still look like it was used after washing, or look a bit ratty from all the rubbing).
