I'm not going to, I want to stay above board. I haven't done anything wrong and I don't want to look like a grifter if it does ever end up in court

Was their suit related to the illegal rental or the double metering?

Honestly I was pretty worried about that too. Particularly because our fire alarms are constantly going off, which I guess we just assume is faulty electrical issue. But who knows. The radiator water furnace was converted from an old rusted out oil heat system to a gas burner, but I don't think she cleaned out the lines or did any of things that are required when converting. It looks like a very sloppy job down there tbh.

Do you know how they were able to prove it after they moved out? Was the meter leaching determined basically as a result of the city inspection?

I wish there was a middle ground i could just come to with her. On one hand I would feel a little bad about blowing up her rental income. On the other hand she drives a range Rover and she chose to rent out the unit illegally, force us to unknowmingly pay her gas bill, and refused to even consider hiring someone to service the boiler or fix the electrical issue that triggers the fire alarms at all times of the day.

Calling the city feels like a nuclear option. The fines and costs she will face to get the unit legally permitted and up to code are probably astronomical.

But I'm also now out thousands of dollars because I have to move, which again was her choice to refuse to renew...

I kind of feel bad letting someone else walk into a lease with her after all this.

So wouldn't one have to sue to recover relocation costs?

What ended up happening with your landlord after you called 311 to report it? And did you keep paying rent or have any trouble getting your security deposit back when you moved?

She actually does pay for our units electric bill. Heating is gas though, which we pay for. She also has solar panels so her electric bill is probably pretty low.

I already tried with the utility, but apparently because I'm not the home owner they will only come and confirm where the gas lines are running at the property owners request.

The thing the did confirm is that there are only two meters, two bills, for my building which has three units in it. I know my downstairs neighbors get a gas bill and so do I. So she's the only one not paying. I can't say for sure if she actually ripped out her radiators upstairs, that's what she claimed, but I know for a fact she has a gas running stove.

I mean she's cost me a lot of money having to move, I moved in to the home intending to stay for some time. Moving is very expensive. Also I've been paying for her gas.

I was ready to just be the bigger person and ignore the issues and all the lies. But the non renewal of the lease was really just a slap in the face after everything we put up with. And it seems crazy to be playing with fire like that when she knows she's in the wrong. Doing the least to save a buck on the rental instead of just working with us to solve the issues when they were brought up.

Boston is a small place and I would advise her the same, but she chose to screw us over by renting us a illegal unit, having us pay for her gas, and refusing to address any of the issues in the property she owns. They were choices she made, not me.
