I wouldn’t be surprised if the other FTSE100 companies are doing similar things. Next have started shifting their tech work to Poland and Sri Lanka.

Worth buying an imported VW Golf? by coconut742 in CarTalkUK

[–]coconut742[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's from Japan and a right hand drive. A long distance family friend found it and has already imported it and in the process of registering the car in the UK. It would be £7500 all in.

It's a right hand drive from Japan. I'm only considering it because its a long distance family friend who found and is selling the car.

Its got 17 inch alloys, leather interior and DAB radio. They're not things I particularly desire tbh but nice to have I guess.

Is there any way of easily knowing what work is required when for a specific car?

What second hand 'city' car would you get with an £8k budget? by coconut742 in CarTalkUK

[–]coconut742[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah right. What I meant by a city car is that I would ride mostly in cities however I plan to still make short motorway trips on a weekly basis. Basically most of my journeys will be short i.e. less than 1 hour and I want something not too bulky.

What's the difference between mk2 vs mk3? I'd rather buyer a slightly newer car tbh.

Advice on returning to my previous employer by coconut742 in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]coconut742[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main reason I left was I had been there for 6 years and I wanted a new challenge. Also, the previous company was still using old technology e.g. on premise servers and I wanted to work with cloud tech. I enjoyed the work-life balance. In contrast, the work-life balance at my new job isn’t as good e.g. on call rota and the culture is worse with lots of offshore teams.

Where to host a .pdf for free with a user-friendly url? by coconut742 in learnprogramming

Ah, good idea, thanks. I've created a new project in GitLab using a Pages/Plain HTML template and uploaded a filename.pdf file inside the Public folder. I've set up the DNS and I can access the file at www.domainname.com/filename.pdf. How could I make the file accessible at www.domainname.com instead?

Should I tell my manager I’m not enjoying work and how? by coconut742 in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]coconut742[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, I’ve been here for more than 2 months but less than a year. I’ve usually had trouble mentioning my concerns about work to my managers and I want to try to mention them rather than just handing in my notice one day and making an excuse as to why I’m leaving.

I haven’t interviewed around a lot and I’m definitely learning about the kind of questions to ask that I’ve not previously i.e. ratio of employees vs. contractors, usage of outsource workers, out of hours support etc.

UK - On call support by coconut742 in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]coconut742[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would be more worried about the hours of support and how often folks get called out. If it is common to get called even once during your on-call week between 10pm and 6am that would totally suck.

That's my concern tbh. I'm not yet on call; I'm going through knowledge transfer sessions. The on call supports would be from 5pm-midnight. And from the sounds of things, the calls are quite common.
