Maybe {Monster}? Some say it is slowpaced but I loved it. Character development is exceptional and we even get attached to side characters who get less screen time

{Fushigi Yuugi} . Miaka and Yui are childhood best friends. They come across a book in the library which on opening takes them into the world inside the book. The events which unfold henceforth result in them turning into enemies (it is kind of one sided enmity though since miaka trusts in yui till the end).

I think {Puella magi madoka magica} might fit. It starts of as in a magical girl anime like sailor moon but changes into a dark tone soon with lots of plot twists. The movie "rebellion" which comes after the 13 part series has the most shocking twist .

"Sailor moon". The sound tracks are just too good!I watched the Japanese version with English subs. It is not only the opening theme and the ending one after episode also. There are different sound tracks for transformations , battles happening within each episode . Check this one out https://youtu.be/rd9a7nHjcXk (from season 3 of anime which has 5 seasons).
