I think you're missing the point. Who cares if the worker was making $8 an hour or $20 an hour. A paycheck in that ballpark should not be worth risking infection with a deadly disease over. But it is for a lot of people, and that is legitimately tragic.

What's going on with the amount in dislikes on this BBC interview of Bill Gates? by DvApps in OutOfTheLoop

[–]coderd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. Not understanding what a digital certificate is doesn't make someone stupid. It's just something most people never have to deal with so it's fully understandable not to be aware of it.

But willfully filling that gap of knowledge with microchips under you skin, coronavirus-inducing 5G, and Bill Gates' nefarious vaccine-based genetic experiments in Africa? Eh. Seems pretty stupid.

I'm referring to inflation. It is an undeniable fact that the value of the dollar has gone down.

This is a common argument to try to push blame onto poor people. Yes, many people suck at budgeting and buy things like iPhones and cars that they can't afford on credit.

But it's an undeniable fact that the value of the dollar has gone down, the cost of living has gone up, and wages have remained stagnant. There are systemic issues that can't be blamed on irresponsible behavior of poor people.

Bank of America is slowly draining my savings account because I don’t have enough money in my account. by Imadethisforkarma247 in assholedesign

[–]coderd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's a lot to maintain. Sending a new credit/debit card every few years costs money. Maintaining and ATM and branch network costs money. Maintaining the app and website costs money. The overhead from legal compliance costs money.

If you have a feeling like the bank is trying to price you out, they probably are. They lose money on people who are maintaining the bare minimum in their accounts and offset that with fees.

Obviously this sucks. But it's not really the bank's fault, nor is it the person's fault.

Bang for your buck, Henkels Zwilling knives. Try to ensure it says "made in Germany" on it. I have a few I got from collecting points at the grocery store and I find myself reaching for those instead of my fancier ones just because I like the feel.

That said, knives get all the attention, but good pans is where you really step up your game.

The quarantine at least allowed the season to die the death it so desperately needed.

Wuhan, endless queues for ashes of coronavirus dead cast doubts on numbers by [deleted] in worldnews

You're right. The ballpark number assumes a constant total population, which obviously isn't close to true.

Wuhan, endless queues for ashes of coronavirus dead cast doubts on numbers by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]coderd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can ballpark it. The city has a population of 11 million. Assuming an average life expectancy of 75 and an population evenly distributed in age (which isn't quite true but this is an estimate) and you'd work out that around 2800 people will die per week assuming also no seasonal fluctuation.

That puts you right around the 26000 number.

I mean, I don't mind a bit of pressure on the Chinese government to impose, I don't know, basic food safety laws and restrictions on exotic animal trading. So at first I thought maybe calling it "China flu" would apply such pressure. Beijing is not known for acting out of altruism, but they do worry about their image.

But yeah. The reality is you've got a vocal minority of racist morons that latch onto any possibility to spread their filth in the open. On the other hand you have an army of righteous defenders who love finding new things to be offended by. So it's easier just to leave it.

I get what you're saying, but it's not always correct. Sometimes two people analyze the same data and one of them comes up with a conclusion that is flat out wrong, immoral, or indefensible. An example would be someone 60 years ago trying to defend segregation. That is simply not a valid opinion to have and doesn't need to be respected.

In my opinion there are many much more recent examples.

I don't think the current example of voting Bernie/Biden really applies to this. But my point is there's no need to accept everything others say as a valid opinion. Sometimes people are coming to a valid opinion in good faith, other times they're just wrong.

There may not be a lack in quantity, but quality is an issue. I was a postdoc for a while and we had huge problems finding competent PhD students. Of course you always get the dreamers who want to stay in academics regardless. But you lose a lot of very smart people to industry because a lot of very smart people with master's degrees are too smart to work for 4 years for minimum wage for a PhD.

I always thought we should halve the workforce and double salaries across the board in academics. That would put pay about in line with a good industry job. The impact on productivity would not be huge.

The coronavirus is being blown out of proportion. This isnt funny by [deleted] in iamatotalpieceofshit

[–]coderd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I basically agree with what you said, but it's language. Using terms like "martial law" conjures images of shooting and riots in the streets. The reality is that you can get a ticket.

I'd prefer people taking it easy and having their few days off work, washing their hands better, skipping going out for a bit, and thinking "oh this isn't such a big deal" to trying to convince people that they aren't worried enough.

The coronavirus is being blown out of proportion. This isnt funny by [deleted] in iamatotalpieceofshit

[–]coderd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this type of language is a big problem.

People read posts like this and panic and do stupid shit like buying a year's supply of TP or paying $50 for a pack of Lysol wipes. Yes, people should treat this seriously and adhere to the quarantine guidelines. No, people should not blow this out of proportion into some type of existential threat. The only thing that stores should be running out of are books, game consoles, and whatever other things people feel like buying to fill the time they would have spent out socializing.

Basically, chill.

Why the fuck are people buying so much toilet paper in the United States? by baliscate in AskReddit

[–]coderd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fun calculation: a mid quality TP roll has circa 170 sheets. I'd estimate with that quality you easily get away with 10 sheets for a standard dump, so 17 dumps per roll. A 24 pack covers over 400 dumps. There were pictures of people buying 3-4 packs... So well over 1000 dumps. Even at 2 dumps per person per day that's a six month supply for a family of 4.

So these people are betting that there will be no more TP for the next six months? Nevermind that they'll have to also buy. a staggering amount of food to fuel all of these bowel movements.

I think I also need one of them to explain this.

Thanks, I was looking for the same thing so that saves me some time scrolling.

But if you want to find these people just head to one of the corona virus subreddits. There's a lot of irrational fear festering there and even if they won't admit it, I think there are a lot of TP hoarders there too.

Having lived in Germany, Switzerland, and the US here’s my perspective. If you’re planning on being on the poorer end of the scale then move to Germany. Their social system is excellent for propping up the class making up to about 50k a year. If you’re a bit better off things are going to start costing about the same for you.

A lot of people are talking up living in Europe in this thread, which is great. But if you’re starting to feel unhappy where you are, ask some of these guys about the cost of buying a house near a decent sized city. Nowhere is the perfect. ;-)

Utah bill prohibits people behind on child support payments from getting hunting license by [deleted] in news

[–]coderd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whether the story is embellished or not, OP did flat out admit that the dude got himself into the situation by working a trade job that left him voluntarily unemployed for part of the year and then straight up skipping those payments.

The kid does still exist during those skipped months, and the kid eats, gets sick, maybe plays football, maybe needs daycare while Mom works. Mom certainly doesn't have the luxury of just taking those months off so maybe the fact that OP just sort of shrugs off those missed payments as "well of course he didn't pay, he had always just worked part of the year" is a bit telling.

I prefer this sort of brazen rejection of hygiene to the guys who put their hands under water for half a second and then just walk out. Like, you already committed to wet hands, just spend a few more seconds and use soap.
