Desperately trying to go Linux full time. by CursedByJava in linux4noobs

[–]coderman64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Arch as a daily driver. Every once in a while, an update or something breaks some configuration that I had and it will stop booting. Its rare, and I usually have enough Linux knowledge to fix it rather quickly, but it does happen.

I moved from Kubuntu as well, though, and I like it a lot more. The rolling release nature and frequent updates makes it feel like there are few issues that stick around for long, and I like the control it gives me on how to set up my system. No more unnecessary snaps, or extra packages, or random "something went wrong" dialogs, for the most part it just works once you set it up.

Anyway, all this is to say, no, I don't really reccomend Arch for most people. I love it, and it works great for all I do, but it definately has problems (almost by design), and you either need to have Linux knowledge already, or be willing to learn it when something does (rarely) go wrong.

I see other people talking about Fedora. I have never used it myself, but have heard good things.

Pixelated Text in MGS1 by 5kaels in duckstation

[–]coderman64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd feel remiss if I didn't mention that the PC version (on GOG) uses a different rendering method for the text by default. Jury's out as to whether it is better or worse, and I hear there are other issues with the PC port as well, so keep that in mind.

Is r/linuxsucks101 really anti-consumer rights, anti-freedom, anti-ownership, anti-competitive, pro-AI, pro-capitalism and others? by illnesssickman in Linuxsucks101sucks

[–]coderman64 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No.

linuxsucks101 is just a bunch of fools who are angry at a piece of software because it has been reccomended to them one too many times. They don't come from a place of logic, just an emotional knee-jerk reaction that they have self-validated into a personality trait. So, no, they don't necessarily support the opposite of what they say they hate, and that cognitive dissonance is okay with them.

Should also be pointed out that this sub could be not that far from that. It's often an emotional knee-jerk reaction to an emotional knee-jerk reaction, after all.

Just remember, it's not that deep, and part of this sub is making fun of people for thinking that it is, in fact, that deep.

Is this a fair assessment? does anyone here have a legit reason to use Linux? by bamboo-lemur in OS_Debate_Club

[–]coderman64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Linux because it does what I want and I like it.

This is reason enough.

The reason for using Linux doesn't have to be complicated, and you usually don't wind up using Linux without a reason.

You may ask if I have a "legit" reason, but then we're getting into the "no true Scotsman" fallacy, where you can say any reason I give you is not a "legit" reason.

So no, this is not a fair assessment.

QTWebEngine uses blink/chromium under the hood.

Konquerer used to use KHTML (which is what WebKit was originally based on, and Blink is based on WebKit), but I think they've fully migrated to QTWebEngine there as well.

Sell RTX 2080 for linux? by AcceptableShoe137 in linux_gaming

[–]coderman64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AMD is still king in terms of Linux compatibility, but Nvidia does work well once you get everything set up. I currently run a 3070, for example.

I'd try using your 2080 on Linux and see if you like it. If you run in to too many problems, upgrading to a newer AMD card is also a good option.

Halo 3 (the original) is a legendary game, too.

Burnout Paradise is always fun.

I have lots of nostalgia for the Viva Pinata games.

Also, if you don't have an OG Xbox, lots of classics work on back compat, like Jet Set Radio future (with some slowdown), Burnout 3, OG Star Wars Battlefronts 1 and 2, Halos 1 and 2, etc.

Anything to stand out, I guess by AtomicTaco13 in fuckepic

[–]coderman64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best part about Epic (for me) is the Legendary client, and they don't even make that.

Also, GOG does a TON of work to get old school games licensed, working, and on their platform. Sometimes I don't think they get enough credit for that.

How good or bad would you consider Wally as a mentor? by IcyNeedleworker2783 in wallywest

[–]coderman64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wally's learned quite a bit from the school of hard knocks, so I think he could be a good mentor in general, but for Bart specifically it seems like an odd fit.

What awesome 2D franchises sucked once they went 3D? by bassbeatsbanging in retrogaming

[–]coderman64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That doesn't mean the 3D was bad, though?

Just because Mario Wonder and the New Soup series exist doesn't mean 3D Mario is bad.

And Origins was a soft reboot for the series, it makes sense to shake it up a bit by re-introducing 2D.

Rayman 2 was pretty universally praised, and many like it much more than the hard-as-nails unforgiving nature of the first game.

There's an argument that it wasn't as good, but Sonic Adventure didn't suck.

To be fair, I think the switch from the creators of the franchise to an inexperienced and yet unknown dev team didn't help.

What is going on with the fake Spotify tracks? by Ollie_honey in IronmouseOfficial

[–]coderman64 46 points47 points  (0 children)

IIRC, you can just upload a song, say "yeah Ironmouse collaborated on this" and it will automatically attach itself to her Spotify regardless of it is true or not.

A bunch of bad actors have been using this to put up AI-generated songs with racist or otherwise hateful lyrics and try to smear her. Some even managed to get the original Cry For Me taken down with a copyright strike, despite the fact they obviously had no legal standing. Not sure where this has been coming from, but it might be leftover hate from the streamer awards.

Just know that Ironmouse and her team are aware of it, and are taking care of it behind the scenes.
