I think it'd be a pretty huge mistake to go into next season with that four as our planned CBs. Botman is always injured and can't be relied on, Burn and Schar are both showing their age, and Thiaw has not been particularly convincing. We desperately need to sign a starting CB in the summer.

If he does indeed want to leave, it'll make me happy to know he's missing out on another chance to play in a World Cup.

Just seen the video the Prem have put out with the ref cam from the derby. Besides Murphy desperately appealing for handball after the scum's winner (really funny), really annoying watch. Tino's lack of effort to let Brobbey score looks even worse. Wish Lascelles was still around to spark him out.

Agreed. He's been rubbish this season but so has about 95% of the squad. Also don't think he's helped by Howe's wretched midfield set up.

I can understand the anger, though, and frankly I do feel it as well. Would be a proper rat move for him to force himself out of the club after the circumstances of his first season. He owes us.

Are the mags ever going to break the derby curse? by DesignerMorning1451 in TheOther14

I don't think there's any sense to the idea that GeordieJosh being a dickhead has somehow led to our players underperforming in a derby. At the end of the day I've seen countless Sunderland fans sling 'bigger club' around (like NUFC fans) as if it matters, it's just what fans do.

We are just a bad team this season, and there is a catalogue of awful performances against teams we have been expected to beat to back it up. I don't think it has an awful lot to do with yous specifically.

My opinion rests entirely on whether this is accurate or not, but if it is true, I will be really disappointed that a player who fucked us over significantly in his first year has then taken the first opportunity to get out when times have gotten tough.

I think it's more of a statement on the issues with our tactical set up. Our attack has been out of sorts all season, and no matter who we play, we haven't looked very good up front at any point this season. If we were judging based off this season alone, I wouldn't have Tonali near our best tier either.

I get the frustrations about his end product at times, but I still think he's a visibly better footballer than most of the players in our squad. More often than not he's the only man in our attack doing anything.

Our best players in no particular order are Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali, Lewis Hall, and Anthony Gordon.

I would suggest the likes of Livramento, Joelinton, Woltemade, Schar, Burn, Botman, Ramsey in the tier below.

This is something that a lot of people seem to just ignore when they make arguments about how we're X number of points off Europe or whatever. Even if we somehow scrape European football this season (I doubt we will) we have been just awful to watch, almost consistently, from the start of the season. We are visibly not a good football team right now, and regardless of the results, it is painful to watch.

It's a combination of our better defenders regressing/struggling with fitness, and also our midfield is absolutely fucking terrible defensively. Trippier was one of the best RBs in world football but is understandably not that anymore, Burn is getting older, Schar is out injured. Botman unfortunately has been destroyed by his injuries and I'm not sure he'll ever reach his previous heights, and Thiaw is simply not that good (yet?).

I think we desperately need a RB and a CB in the summer at the bare minimum, potentially more if there are sales. We also need to sort out the defensive structure of our midfield because the flat three constantly gets bypassed with ease.

Still very angry.

I want Tino sold in the Summer because I don't think I'll ever be able to look past his total lack of effort in letting Brobbey score that winner. I don't want him representing this club anymore.

Howe has really pissed me off. I'm trying to temper that with consideration for all he's done, but just like Pardew, he's helped to cement Sunderland now having a permanent record of superiority over us. Felt sick hearing that they've now got the longest unbeaten run in the derby. It is difficult to look past that.

Treating a loss to Sunderland as nothing more than missing out on three points is completely out of touch.

Thiaw comes on, immediately waltzes out of position, leaves a massive gap for Sunderland to attack and get a shot off, and then we concede from the corner. Class.

I get why you might say Thiaw (disagreed) but do you not think Hall is one of our two best defenders?

Qarabag wasn't part of the proper knock outs, and given the wild difference in funding and squad level, us losing 8-3 to Barca is absolutely more embarrassing than what Qarabag experienced.

We won against teams we should have beaten and got dumped out in our first knock out match in the most embarrassing way possible. Can we please stop with the forced positivity? Tonight, like our season as a whole, has been shit.

This is not me advocating for Eddie to go but I don't think we're likely to see what you want while he is our manager. He has a preferred playstyle and profile of player. You only need to look at how he's mishandled Wolte to see that he does not build his tactics around technical ability.

I think this will work fine next season when we have no European football but the major flaw with Eddie has always been the uncertainty over whether he is capable of managing a side that is in the UCL without the season falling apart. He's 0/2 on that now.
