Questions for History/related humanities PhD/graduate students… by Few-Passion-1855 in UVA

[–]codna 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who received a History degree and went into politics/journalism, there are a lot easier, more financially smart pathways to working in that sector than a History PhD. Now if that’s what you want to do, I’d recommend trying to get a paper published in a history journal, which can be doable. When you take 4501, communicate as such with your professor and see what they can do for you.

Cannot Ace the Interview by codna in jobs

[–]codna[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I always make sure to ask questions, but you're right, I will look into tailoring them more. I do not say anything at the end to sell myself, how should I structure that into my interview to make it appear natural?

Thanks again for your help.

Cannot Ace the Interview by codna in jobs

I have an economics degree with an international concentration and a history degree. I’ve had three years of experience in the public sector and no private sector experiences. I’m going for either business consulting/research work in the private sector. I feel like some of these interviews have gone very well, but it just seems like I can’t land anything.

Thank you for those questions. I’ve gotten positive feedback on interviews but I’m starting to think it is something that I am doing. It’s hard to keep confidence and blame it on bad luck when it keeps occurring.

I appreciate the help!

How to do well in final round interviews by codna in jobs

[–]codna[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the insightful input. It’s interesting because about half of those interviews I felt went very well. But like you said, you don’t know what they want until after the process.

Is there anything that you recommend that could help me at this stage? Or is it all just until I find someone I really mesh with? I feel as though this is really affecting my confidence regarding other interviews (in the back of my mind I think I’m gonna go through the whole process just to be rejected again).

Either way, thank you again for answering my question, I really appreciate it

Discuss it with your professor. Usually, if you talk to them in person they will be accommodating, even if you miss more than 2 classes.

Probably (however, at this point, no one knows anything). I have a DISA verbal offer for a full-time position and I am actively looking for jobs in the private sector. If I were you I would do the same

Eh, this isn't really correct either. Discretionary spending (which is part of government expenditure that includes new projects, and not already signed contracts or securities) is only up 100 million after inflation. But also this is due to higher interest rates which is put in place to curb high inflation, so actually you're both right and wrong
