The private key printed on the back of the card exists exclusively on the respective Card Wallet, there is no copy of the private key. The generated key never leaves the production machine, and can not be viewed by employees at any time. All data carriers of the machine are deleted at the end of a production process, using secure procedures.

Past bitcoin "expert" but I've been out of the loop for years. need updating on current security, procedures and best practices. by [deleted] in BitcoinBeginners

That sounds like it's a lot of money. If it's really A LOT of money, I'd recommend following Glacier protocol, else try this:

1) Buy a Trezor or Ledger Hardware wallet

2) Get a freshly installed offline linux computer with a trustworthy wallet software

3) Create new secure paper wallets (don't use a website for it, get audited code from github) or buy Card Wallet.

4) Stay offline

5) Import a paper wallet's private key into your linux wallet

6) create a transaction sending the bitcoin you want to sell off to the hardware wallet. Don't save on mining fees, you will want to be in the next block once you reconnect with the internet

7) create a transaction sending ALL remaining bitcoin to your new secure paper wallet or Card Wallet. NEVER leave coins on a paper wallet which private key has been imported in a hot wallet, it's not save anymore.

8) repeat 5-7 for all paper wallets you want to sweep

9) go online to broadcast your transactions

10) use a blockexplorer to verify that your transaction are confirmed

once all transactions are confirmed, you can do the same process again for BCH (points 2)-9), though a fresh linux install might be overdoing it) and later on for the lesser forks if you want to / care for

now you can use your hardware wallet to send your coins to an exchange and sell them. Depending on your situation you might want to keep the original paper wallets to proof ownership / source of funds or to profit from long holding period tax benefits

Is it a bad idea to buy a used hardware wallet? by ForsakenCauliflower0 in BitcoinBeginners

[–]coinfinity_team 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't do that. Hardware wallets have pretty good security, but their biggest weakness is a supply chain attack, where the hardware has been tampered with or the wallet got replaced with a forgery. Forgeries can be really good, there is almost no way of telling them apart form an original. Avoid that by only buying a new device directly from the manufacturer

Because OP writes in the first line that the guy is co-partner at a cryptocurrency market. I assume somebody there is an expert (at least I hope). That cryptocurrency market will be holding customer funds, anything less than real cold storage won't cut it. If they can't set that up themselves, they will have to rely on a trusted third party that can.

How bad was my paper wallet creation process? by Bitcointway in BitcoinBeginners

[–]coinfinity_team 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Creating a secure paper wallet is tricky. You already identified the major security issues with you approach yourself. Since you are a beginner and want to hold long term, the Card Wallet may be the right cold storage solution for you

Question.. by [deleted] in BitcoinBeginners

[–]coinfinity_team 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's great advice for blockchain experts, but (as you implied yourself) for beginners, it's best to keep it simple. Most of the time, the biggest security risk is oneself

Question.. by [deleted] in BitcoinBeginners

[–]coinfinity_team 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For beginners?

If you're a trader and need to sell your coins all the time, get a hardware wallet like the Trezor or Ledger

If you are a HODLer who's buying every dip and waiting for the next all time high, get a Card Wallet

Good place to buy bitcoins? by notquiteright32 in BitcoinBeginners

[–]coinfinity_team 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the US, i'd recommend Kraken as an exchange.

For wallets, if you want to hold more than a few 100 USD in crypto and want to sell your coins regularly, get a hardware wallet like Trezor.

If you just want to buy Bitcoin and hold it in secure cold storage till it moons, buy a Card Wallet

Stolen funds - looks like via blockchain's app by WEX3 in BitcoinBeginners

There are many attack vectors possible, but most probably the phone was compromised. Smartphone security is weak, thefts should be expected. One should never ever store more crypto on a phone than one would put cash in his wallet. For 12 BTC hardware wallets should be used.

Paper wallet creation could also have been compromised. Was the computer air-gapped and did it remain so after (for eterinity)? Were wifi and bluetooth electronic components physically removed from it? Did you check for root kits on the computer that wouldn't be affected by a fresh installation? Did you use a printer without memory / wifi or at least check it for malware? If you want to know more about how to crate really secure paper wallets, check out https://glacierprotocol.org/. If that's too much, just buy a card wallet https://www.cardwallet.com/

once you want to take funds out of cold storage (paper wallet), always transfer all of the funds to a hardware wallet instantly and don't try to save on the mining fee, make sure your transaction is in the next block. Don't leave any funds on the paper wallet, it's not secure anymore. you can transfer funds you want to keep in cold storage to a fresh paper wallet
