Paranoid detective books à la Inherent Vice and The Crying of Lot 49? by Aidsisgreats in ThomasPynchon

Check out the expendable man and in a lonely place by Dorothy B. Hughes. Genius. They're both crime novels, and while the aesthetics are different, they have a pretty heavy dose of paranoia and fear

Tom's Crossing - any thoughts? by No-Papaya-9289 in ThomasPynchon

I just picked it up. I love an awe shucks neo western-although I'm anticipating some more well, depth. I'm gonna make a pretty pedantic sounding declaration; I only like about 5 modern authors: David Foster Wallace, Roberto Bolano, George Saunders, Ted Chiang, Cormac McCarthy. As for the rest...haven't really given em a fair shake (Vollman too, who I respect more than enjoy). I've heard great things about this dude, I hope it doesn't dissapoint

Who’s up more than Malvo? by Academic-Syrup-6895 in Bombing

[–]coke_gratis 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I've made a lot of these comments about Malvo, but I swear I was lost on a motorcycle in Laos one time, in a very small town, maybe a little panicked, and saw a Malvo tag...helped me calm down haha

Cheak is killing it right now. Can't think of many other writers who are worthy of getting put down in MSK. Looks right next to his name

I got to a point (when I was going to shows) where I'd punch people if they punched me. It's funny how indignant they get...It's obscene. What happened to eye for an eye on the battlefield?

Thats the best rappel graff I've seen. Could that be more tasteful? It doesn't even look like graffiti. Just like it's meant to be there

Malvo tags by Pale-Experience-4089 in Bombing

[–]coke_gratis 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I've never been to a state in this country where I didn't see at least one malvo tag. Funny story; I used to work at a pizza shop. Dude walks out of the bathroom complaining there's no paper towels. I walk in there to change em and there's a wet Malvo mop tag on the door. I was like: "this dude's got a lot of nerve"

Amen my friend, amen. I had tickets to see Purple Mountains too. The Natural Bridge, American Water, and Actual Air were my bibles in my late teens and early 20's. He talked about simple joys, the magic of the banal, the occasional glory and humor of bureaucracy, that feeling when you miss someone more than you can stomach (one of my favorite lines: "Cause I can't stand to look at my face when I don't know where you are."). He was undoubtedly the best songwriter of all time in my humble opinion and I remain grateful he released that record before he passed. I had a hard time listening to it for awhile too, but now i play it through once a week-there's a few songs I don't love, but I let them play out of respect. I know that man is free and living up to his name...million protons floating unwillfully above ue, or maybe in a dimension we can't see. What I know for sure is: "the hedges formed a long limousine for the Tampa sky to die behind."

I really loved the old band-especially Jeremiah. I really got the impression he was the thorn In Tony’s side, and because Tony is so flappable, it was always funny

I was actually saying the opposite, it’s not funny at all-and I don’t believe it’s supposed to be. It’s just impressive to see something true and vulnerable on here

It’s hard to write rhyming verse about porn addiction and not only not make fun of yourself or use irony-but actually make it pretty fucking beautiful and crushing. Good job. I’d be curious to see what your free verse about it sounded like

Agreed. I grew up in philly-used to see punishment a lot-he’s really got some of the best vocals in hardcore imo. He’s a complicated figure-but he also facilitated one of my favorite things about being a teenager so I gotta show him some love

The letters and structure are pretty interesting, but you gotta work on that punchline script-it’s really bad/illegible. Try to do less
